Someone who knows more will probably correct me, but I believe that the KHL salary cap now covers all players (from 14-15 onwards), previously some players moving from NA to the KHL were exempt.

Hamburg got ~ 5,500 for both of their games, which is ~3,000 below their average last season of 8,500. Djurgarden closed half of their arena to play Fribourg. I think Nottingham did very well selling as many tickets as they did.

KHL Salary Cap is $32 million a year, however they can overspend this and are subject to a 20% luxury tax on this. In 2013-2014 SKA budget was $38.5 million, however I don't think this included Kovalchuk's salary. The top 7 players in the KHL earnt $30million, and these aren't included in the salary budgets given here: www.khl.ru/documents/KHL_clubs_salaries_funds_2013.pdf (it's in Cyrillic and I couldn't find the english version!). There's some more info here: hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/showthread.php?t=1493407Medvescak spent $5 million in 2013-2014, and that includes a number of ex-NHL players. The salaries in the KHL are quite significantly cheaper than the NHL. Even with Kovalchuk, SKA spent ~$3 million less on salaries than the lowest NHL team. Edit: My maths is off! SKA spent ~$50 million, Calgary Flames spent $53 million and they were the lowest spends in the NHL. Not $13 million as I initially said

The imports the top CHL teams have are miles above the EIHL ones. The only ones who aren't on paper such as the Abbott twins are playing in Europe generally because they are too small and not physical enough for the NHL. In Europe on the big ice and less physicality they are brilliant as we witnessed today. A team like Lulea wouldn't beat an NHL team but could give them a game, especailly on the big ice. Teams in the CHL have beaten NHL teams before such as Zug & Zurich. Hamburg lost to LA Kings 5-4 just a couple of years ago Ta. Very interesting. List of all NHL games played outside of NA: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_international_games_played_by_NHL_teamsI think today's game was the most times I've been frustrated after goals going in. A lot of them seemed to be deflections off Nottingham players and a couple of them the netminders will want back. That's not to say that Lulea weren't a class above today, they controlled the play very well and were very fast. Nottingham really need to cut out the errors to have any sort of chance of keeping the score down. Too many passes going astray, which when you have so little of the puck you cant do. Lulea made sure every pass had a very high chance of making it to the intended recipient. Too many times Nottingham's passes were too weak (see Lukko's 3rd goal on Friday). They need to make certain of their passes and their clearances. After these two games, I think my next game will be a NIHL game That'll be a shock, I've got used to fast skating and great stickhandling!

On my phone, so difficult to write much, but a few things: - The speed and skill of the game was incredible. - Lukko's players were all great skaters and very skillful, but the thing I noticed most was their awareness. Whenever a puck was loose they seemed to know exactly where it was and how to get it. The exception being just before the first Panthers goal! - If Robinson was staying for the whole season, I would genuinely worry for the rest of the league. The guy is in a different class to the rest of the team, could do with a bit of help though as he went alone quite a lot. - Cohen is big and quite slow, but makes up for it with good positional play and a great pokecheck. Did make a few mistakes though. - Panthers really need to work on their breakout passes from their own zone, too many times they gave away the puck needlessly.
Overall, it was a good game and Panthers played well. I'm looking forward to the game on Sunday as well.

On a similar theme, highlights of Lulea's final game of the season can be found here: play.shl.se/video/9941683/ (They lost to Växjö in the playoffs).

Thanks for the info. Sounds like the system finnish second tier league uses As mentioned above, Premier Sports are showing 1 game a week in HD. Oddly the Elite League is one of the few things you can watch globally with Premier Player (if you sign up and try to watch NHL for example it will say its not available in your geographic region). The link is here www.premierplayer.tv/ . The other teams that provide live streams are: Belfast: giantslive.tv/users/sign_inCardiff: cardiffdevilstv.net/Coventry: www.cleancutsports.com/index.php/live-webcastsEdinburgh: www.edinburgh-capitals.com/ (They appear a bit infrequently, and tend to appear in the news if they're doing one or not). Hull: www.hullstingrays.net/live.phpSheffield: sheffieldsteelers.tv/users/sign_inNot sure how frequently Edinburgh and Sheffield have webcasts, but I don't think it's every week. Quality-wise, I've heard Sheffield is very good, however not watched it myself, Belfast is pretty good. In cardiff the camera is a bit low so it's not a great angle, Coventry was okay as well. Hull & Edinburgh tend to be a bit lower quality. They all have highlights online, so if you fancy seeing what the quality is like before getting a stream, you can always look at the highlights. All of them appear to be £8 per game whilst Premier Player is £9.99 or £11.99 a month depending on which package you get.

Clan will be announcing their final signing tomorrow, Hull are finished, Flyers have 1 more (likely to be Jamie Milam, by the sounds of it), Edinburgh have 4 or 5 more (depending on if they start with 11 or 12) and Dundee have 2 more.
It sounds as though Flyers might go up to 12 imports some time during the season.

As a neutral (ex Manchester Phoenix fan, but since moving to our London I've watched more NIHL than anything - I still go to the EIHL playoffs every year though) I am incredibly excited about the CHL games and I'm staying the weekend to watch the first 2. I enjoy EIHL hockey (way more than Epl and NIHL) and the opportunity to see Lukko and Lulea was too good to miss for me! I hope ticket sales are good, because it would be a shame given how much support the owners appear to be putting in.
Wish I could make the Hamburg game as well, but the last train is too early

Mark Hurtubise was over here a few years ago playing for Edinburgh, he now plays for Ilves. Worked his way up through the low leagues to be rewarded with SHL and Liiga contracts over the past couple of seasons. Stats in SHL seem deasant, let's see how he plays here. Don't get me wrong but seems he goes the path players normally do in reversed way. Seems that players who have potential to play in high level in europe usually end up in UK at the last years of their careers. By the way, what happens to every potential, talented uk-born players, cos there has to be some. Why there seems to be none in higher leagues like swiss, finnish or swedish leagues? And sorry, starts to go way offtopic I agree he's gone the reverse way to the norm! It shows that he's a hard worker who was willing to start at the bottom and work his way up(Edinburgh are typically at the bottom of the UK Elite League) and is a good example for other players. There's a few okay UK players, Robert Dowd and Ben O'connor have had some success abroad recently, along with a few others. I am not sure why there are no Brits abroad, probably a combination of not good enough and they can earn more money over here. There also appears to be a reluctance for UK sports people to play abroad.

The finnish forwards esp we've had have never disappointed us. Virta was class, and who can forget THAT goal by kimmy in 2004 . Taubert on the back end was very tough also. Thanks for all the info. Hadn't heard of Mäkelä's visit in EIHL, The very same Pekka Virta is by the way the head coach of another CHL team, KalPa Kuopio. Mark Hurtubise was over here a few years ago playing for Edinburgh, he now plays for Ilves. Worked his way up through the low leagues to be rewarded with SHL and Liiga contracts over the past couple of seasons.

....I don't feel our league is that stable. The EPL has more stability. Every year clubs are threatening to leave or near collapsing...... You are joking right? EPL more stable? There are still questions as to whether Slough Jets are going to play in the EPL next season, Bracknell Bees have struggled to see seasons out, Wrightlink Raiders had to drop out of the EPL a few seasons back and Telford Tigers ceased playing for a season. Quite frankly, regardless of what the collective wisdom of THF may state, the EPL is arguably in a worse state than the EIHL. Slough have already dropped out. EPL will be 9 teams next season.

I dont buy the idea that the Phoenix and Bison moved solely due to finances, they very quickly rose to the top of the epl. I think a lot of it was due to the apparent 'big four' domination. They wanted some of that and the only way was to drop down. Fully agree. Phoenix especially were (still are?) owned by a walking ego with ambitions that stretched further than his patience. He wanted silverware, any silverware, and was quite happy to drag the Phoenix into the little pond that is the EPL to go 'pot hunting'. Manchester were losing £150,000 a season in the elite, which is unsustainable. They have a reduced wage bill in the EPL but are charging the same ticket prices as when they were Elite. To sustain the increased wage bill, the ticket prices would also have to increase substantially. It's unfortunate, but they won't be coming up any time soon. I believe they have a rink rental of £3,000 per game which is a hell of a lot for such a rubbish rink. Also, the new rink is not getting built. Due to the financial crisis the plan changed, and it is getting a bit of a refurb and a bowling alley stuck on the side. The terrible sightlines are staying....

Belfast and Sheffield are certs. The other two 50/50. Pity Coventry managed sixth place, I think they are the weakest of the quarter finalists (particularly if Ginand is sidelined as a result of theconcussion he suffered at the end of last nights game), would love to have seen Fife v Dundee at the finals weekend. At least it will be good to see a Scottish team there (hopefully not two of them though) It was Guthrie, not Ginand, that was injured. He's been given the all clear and expected to play this weekend

The NHL 14 games, translates into 3 when he got on the ice for a total of 20min 19 sec so I think we should take more notice of his stats from the other leagues. Thats what makes me laugh when you see 14 nhl games people presume hes played 30 mins in those games, a 4th liner in that league sometimes only plays 7 odd minutes tops. yes people should focus on his time in the AHL or european leagues In total, he got 84 Minutes & 49 seconds of ice time in the NHL, over the 2 seasons he played in there (assuming nhl.com stats are correct).

Workforce on site week starting 20th Jan, according to the man in the know on the Inferno. Here's the website for the arena: www.icearenawales.co.uk/Devils will be getting free ice time for matches and 4 2 hour training sessions a week as well, apparently, but it sounds as though they will get none of the on ice advertising, or the boards around the rink. Although this appears not to be confirmed.

Elite attendances.....According to IIHF.I got a bi monthly news magazine and sure it was in there. Will re check. Having looked at the IIHF news from a year ago, it appears that you are correct: 2011/12 - 2,028 2012/13 - 1,977 although this contradicts the numbers given on hockeyarenas.net which state that all clubs other than Hull have shown an increase in attendances

I feel the children are playing outside 'our' house throwing stones. Those in it are congratulating the club. Lets hope we do get more peeps in the rinks/arenas.Pity the whole picture showed a drop this year for Elite. Does it? I thought all teams bar hull were showing an increase?

According to the CPS: Assault does need contact, just the threat of violence, so yes there is such a thing as verbal assault. I imagine using foul language would be covered by other laws

According to the Devils fans forum, the league decided to change the system to a central booking because some teams were using the ticket money to keep themselves going rather than paying it to the league.

The only EPL rinks I've been to are Slough & Manchester(I'm a Manchester fan originally...not so much now they're in the EPL & I'm in London though...). Manchesters rink is pretty rubbishy, but Slough is even worse - incredibly small crowd and annoying beams in the way. The only good thing about Slough is you can get close to the plexi imo. The skill level is ok, obviously lower than the EIHL by quite some margin and I usually notice that players are reluctant to throw any checks. The pace is noticably slower as well. Overall I don't quite get in to the game as much as I do with EIHL games - when I'm watching as a neutral in both leagues. The plus about Slough games is that it is usually difficult to call games beforehand, as the league seems pretty competitive this year.
Saying that, I went to Invicta v Cardiff in the NIHL (ENL) the other week and there were more checks thrown thaan mosts EIHL games I've seen...! Skill level in the NIHL is pretty dire though, and the range of skills is quite wide, with some players struggling to skate through to players like Sean Scarbrough at Cardiff being able to do a job at EIHL level.
