Black said he wanted this years team to be players who were on their way up, not on the way down ... By that logic you are not going to see many "wow" cv's.

I like the look of this guy and can see him get plenty of starts. Gospel will likely be the back up in most games, and potentially get the last few minutes of a handful of games where the game looks to be in the bag. Gospel will also get to train with two good imports and may be ready to make the no.2 slot his own next season.

For completeness, So far Panthers have Steve Lee, Ollie Betteridge and Robert Lachowicz back to continue their multi-year deals. Imports Dan Spang and Jeff Brown are back for the second half of their deals which also see the pair studying at Loughborough University. Robert Farmer has signed a new multi-year deal and netminder Sam Gospel has signed his first full-time Panthers’ contract. Young prospects Jordan Kelsall and Josh Tetlow have signed entry contracts with the Panthers too. www.panthers.co.uk/content/more-signing-news-sooner-rather-later

The Flames have made their first Elite League signing with the addition of former Great Britain Jr. and Sr. skater Ben Davies. The 26 year old centre iceman transfers to Surrey from Elite outfit Coventry Blaze where he had 4 goals and 14 points in 39 starts. His season included a 10 point opening run in 6 games with Swindon Wildcats, and a 5 game overseas tour with East Coast Hockey League franchise Norfolk Admirals. “I'm really excited about playing for Guildford and looking forward to next season”, offered Davies. “I know Guildford have a fantastic fan base from playing against the Flames in the past, and it will be great to see that week in week out.” Davies is a veteran of 500 games with Cardiff Devils, Braehead Clan, and last season’s stop at Blaze. During his Elite league stretch, the 5’8”, 180lb forward bagged 84 goals and added 137 assists for a 221 point career total. His best top flight season to date was during the 2011-2012 campaign in which the Cardiff born skater iced 54 games with his hometown side while scoring 12 goals and 34 points. “Ben is an experienced Elite league player,” said Head Coach Paul Dixon, “and for that reason alone he is a good addition as we try to find our footing in our first season at that level.” “He skates well, can kill penalties, and he can fit into a variety of situations to help us build depth up the middle of the ice.” guildfordflames.com/davies_signs_with_flames

If betteridge is coming back, we will have 3 u23s ... In which case we should go for either the best British back up available, regardless of age .., or maybe sacrifice an import out skater and use 2 import slots for 2 grade a netties

Any thoughts and/or rumours on Rick Strachan? With the suggestion made that he has played very little part in coaching this past season (for whatever reason), is there still a role for him at the club? I've not heard anything personally, but EP shows he is in contract for 2017/18 ( www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=82192 )

If you are looking for players potentially on their way up, I guess we shouldn't expect any big cv's

With 3 conferences I guess you would play 8 cross conference teams twice home and twice away = 32games 3 inter conference teams three times home and away = 18games (or possibly 4times home and away = 24games)
So, even on the worst case of inter conference of 4 home+away that would be no more than 2016/17.
Result would be 50 or 56 league games (25 or 28 at home, neither of which tie in with the season ticket of 27games)

CLICKSteelers head coach Paul Thompson and his assistant Jerry Andersson have signed new two-year contracts with the club owner Tony Smith today confirmed. Thompson joined the Steelers ahead of the of the 2015-16 season delivering a league title in his first year in charge. He was joined by Andersson at the start of the 2016-17 campaign with the duo combining to help deliver last weekends play off championship. “I believe both Paul and Jerry are the right men to have at the helm of our club” said Smith “I’ve been delighted with their work on and off the ice. Changing either was never an option in my mind and the deal with both of them was concluded well before the finals weekend just gone. “I believe we have become a far more professional club and Paul has been instrumental in delivering that for us. The game has moved on so much in recent years and the experience and leadership Paul and Jerry bring is invaluable. “I think Paul inherited a Steelers team and now we have a Steelers club and that was something I was looking for. We plan ahead, we of course focus on today but we plan for tomorrow as well. “It’s exciting times both in the Elite League and Europe with our recent qualification for the Continental Cup and I’m confident that Paul and Jerry are the right men to take us forward on both levels” .......................

so if you're running a business and it suffers the same fate the steelers have, you wouldn't keep it under wraps until it's fully released into the public domain? Smith is cashing in while he can. I doubt he will make a decent profit out of ice Sheffield. I'm not disputing what you say, just that it was all over Steeltalk a few weeks ago so is not news. If this happens (closure) Steelers will not exist in their present form. Ice Sheffield is not a full time option for an EIHL team. It could happen as Sheffield Council have a long history of incompetence and SIV are little better. Look at Don Valley stadium for example, oh, wait a minute, you can't, it's gone! It was reputed to have cost the taxpayers £42 million to build the arena in the late eighties which was probably grossly overpriced. The interest is possibly still being paid I think but, if it closed, it wouldn't surprise me. Incidentally, I really don't think Tony Smith has the kind of money needed to buy it unless he can do some sort of sliding payment deal, which actually could work in his favour if spread over a long period. There is also the potential issue of the longevity / replacement / on-going maintenance of the ice pad I believe. Being a business man, I'd guess TS has some Crisis/Disaster plan to call on should the worst happen - details of which could be anything really.

From what I saw on social media several weeks ago was that the trust were looking to find buyers for both Sheffield arena and Ice Sheffield. Figures of £15m for the arena, and £5m for I/S have also been mentioned. If I remember correctly, they were looking for a sale to be within 3years. If so, if would maybe explain some of the strange decisions coming out of Sheffield in recent months, and their push for extra income.

....could you simply have a rule that says back-up have to play at least 300mins of game time, or some such number, and then its down to the individual coaches how they manage those minutes?

SHEFFIELD STEELERS STATEMENT on: March 08, 2017 In: EIHL latest news, Elite Teams, Latest News, Sheffield Steelers Sheffield Steelers have issued the following statement regarding the incident at the Steelers-Coventry Blaze game at the Sheffield Arena on Saturday 4th March: During the Game our overhead cameras were panning the arena for our fans to take part in our “kiss cam”. The idea of “kiss cam” is for people to turn to each other and kiss – the best kiss of the night then receives a prize. We also do this as a “dance cam” similar process but the best dancer of the evening wins a prize. The camera picked out people at random in the crowd sitting next to each other, the two males leaned over and kissed their female companions to the left and right respectively. The two males then turned and kissed each other – this was met with applause as a way of the crowd showing their appreciation for those taking part and joining in the fun on the night. The match night announcer, David Simms, called the kissing of the two males “disgusting” and asked that they be removed. This was a most regrettable incident which the Steelers realise has caused tremendous upset to some fans and in particular the LGBT community, many of whom are Steelers fans. The Steelers wish to place on record their sincere apology to anyone who was upset by David’s comments and as an organisation we in no way condone them. David Simms says he is very sorry that his comments have upset people, including those in the LGBT community, but that was not his intention. Steelers Managing Director and Elite Ice Hockey League chairman Tony Smith said: “David’s actions on Saturday night were foolish and thoughtless – I have spoken to him at length and he is very sorry for all the hurt and upset he has caused to the LGBT community. “Yesterday I spoke with Neale Gibson of LGBT Sheffield explaining the events which surrounded the incident on Saturday night, Neale has very kindly offered advice which we are taking. “I have also been in contact with Stonewall to discuss an LGBT programme the Steelers could participate in. Their policy and motto “acceptance without exception” is one the Steelers have always tried to follow. “I must stress David’s actions do not reflect the attitude or policy of the Sheffield Steelers towards the LGBT community – we are a family and welcome each and everyone to the Steelers games without exception and hope this regrettable incident brings the Steelers and the LGBT community closer together in the future.”

This penalty carried an automatic one game ban, which could not be appealed. Fox served this ban on Saturday 25th February when Fife Flyers played Sheffield Steelers. Fox was also assessed an additional four game ban following a review of the incident by the Department of Player Safety. Fife appealed this decision, and upon review the Appeals Panel has reduced the supplementary discipline Fox received from four games to one. Fox will miss the following game: 4th March 2017 – Fife Flyers vs Edinburgh Capitals

Why all the conspiracy theories? He started in the EIHL in Cardiff for 2 years, then came to us for 2 years... then back to Cardiff for 3 years, Kazakhstan for 1 year (and not even a full year at that), then back to Cardiff for another 4 years so far. What doesn't add up about that? It seems fairly obvious to me that - for whatever reason(s) - Cardiff is his number one choice, simple as that. I don't think we need to be going looking for things that probably aren't even there... Conspiracy theory? Not really. Just a few peoples opinion on a bit of a contradictory set of circumstances. Homesick for Swindon/Cardiff whilst living/working in Nottingham. Goes to live/work in Kazakhstan? OK then. I've lived/worked abroad before so I get the homesick bit. A few years of this and I was ready for home. It was a fair bit further distance wise than Nottingham to Swindon too. So the thought of upping sticks again, and moving again thousands of miles further away, within a couple of years, no thanks. Looking at EP, he was 21 when he joined Panthers in 2007, and 26 when he went to Kazakhstan for 13games. People can change alot in 5years, and especially so in maturity between 21yo and 26yo. I don't think the short move to Kazakhstan 5 years on can in itself rubbish any of the initial reports of homesickness personally.

May well have been a penalty goal, if it had been seen. Very rare things. From the rule book (with apologies to pantherdman). Take your pick of the sub clauses. Probably V. RULE 179 – AWARDED GOALS i. For the referee to award a goal to a team without the puck going into the goal net, the defending goaltender must have been removed from the ice for an extra skater prior to the infraction. ii. A goal will be awarded if a goaltender has been removed from the ice and the puck is in the three-dimensional space of the goal crease and a skater from his team deliberately: 1. Falls on, holds, or gathers the puck into his body; 2. Picks up the puck with his hands; 3. Covers his hand on the puck. iii. A goal will be awarded if a goaltender has been removed from the ice and an attacking skater who is on a breakaway is fouled from behind to prevent a clear opportunity to score.iv. A goal will be awarded if a goaltender has been removed from the ice and a skater of his team displaces the goal frame from its normal position when an attacking skater is on a breakaway. v. A goal will be awarded if a goaltender has been removed from the ice and a player or any team official from his team illegally enters the game from the players’ bench or any other part of the arena and interferes with an attacking skater on a breakawayvi. A goal will be awarded if a goaltender has been removed from the ice and a player or team official from the players’ bench or penalty box, by means of his stick or any other object or any part of his body, interferes with the movement of the puck outside the opponent’s defending zone blue line.PS I know it was Guinnessman that asked the question, but the quote things all went to hell and I cba to sort it. Thanks Bob.... indeed it would seem pointless in raising the issue further.
