Just go to thisisnottingham.co.uk and click Sport then Panthers for the story if the links don't work.
Seems Rasto will be staying until we get the replacement for PC. At least that gives us a chance to wave him off at the NIC.
New guy seems good. Time to see how much of our problems were Defence and how much was Rasto...
Now for a big tough, playmaking, goalscoring, glove-dropping, aggressive, fast forward and we're set. (Someone in the Marek Ivan mould would suit me)

Very conflicting messages here. Ellis is quoted in the NEP as saying "A change had to be made", while the Panthers site is almost suggesting the two will play for the position over the next couple of weeks. It seems obvious that you don't bring in a new netminder with this pedigree on a "maybe" so why is the official website reporting it that way?

can't see the point in keeping Rasto, why not save the money for the forward coming in, unless getting rid of Rasto isn't definite.
looks a quality signing, hopefully will bring us some consistency. must admit i still can't believe Stancok hasn't gone, very poor form and giving up at least one minor pen a game. would have been happier seeing him go first

Very sorry to see Rasto go but in all honesty he's not looked solid all year. Next home game is a week on Wednesday so most fans might not even get the chance to give him a good send off. I hope he's there, he'll never be forgotten.

Maybe Ellis is going with joint #1 Netminders for a while to see how it goes. Could be a good move.
It also gives wooly a chance to go back to Romford on loan or another EPL Team & get some game experience.

Disappointed that it's ending this way for Rasto - he did so much for the team and the fans last season.
I remember thinking when Mike re-signed Rasto I was glad I'd not had to make the call - dammed if he did, damned if he didn't. I didn't think Rasto would have any trouble playing the whole season but something has gone wrong as he's never remotely approached last season's form or confidence and it seems to be undermining the rest of the team - especially with our shaky defence. A change was necessary as Rasto hasn't been winning us many games and to do well you need your goalie to steal games you don't deserve to win.
Tom Askey has a good pedigree and has played consistently at a good level, posting decent numbers. I suspect his style will be different to Rasto and fingers crossed he can adapt to our somewhat wayward defence - hope his rebound control is good!
Welcome aboard Tom!

I am sorry to pick on you but its the latest example i have, this kind of sentimentality has been panthers downfall since we have moved to the NIC. Signing ex players has been a pastime that seems to be rife in the nottm fanbase and management alike, whether or not it is good for the team is another matter. There is no room in SUCCESSFUL professional sport for such sentimentality and whilst it exists in nottingham panthers i suspect we will struggle to be a success.

whats wrong with signing ex players? mc aslan for example? signing rasto was the best move after the way he played last season. im not saying he has played well for us this season im just saying that our defence has been very poor but the nettie gets the blame.

I have to say that I do feel that texpef's post is extremely pertinent. There is a very cosy and loyal feeling about the Panthers when viewed from outside. I'm not saying it's a bad thing because how can "nice" be bad, however I feel it does hinder your advance towards being a winning franchise. The ruthlessness that some of your rivals have is rarely demonstrated in the cosy environs of the NIC.
This is partly a good thing. My own personal belief is that the Nottingham Fans are probably the most loyal set. Their numbers have remained disproportionately high considering the poor performance of the team and what I regard from the outside, as a genuine sense of disregard from the franchise as a whole. The loyalty is because you are actually nice.
Where this permeates through to the team though I feel it has become a real disadvantage. The Panthers really do lack a killer edge and although some people call you "pussycats" in a disparaging way, in essence, that is quite an accurate analogy of the team ethic.

Tex,
I agree that too much sentimentality in choosing who to sign is a bad thing... but on the other hand, surely we need to build up the core of the team year on year, have some consistency? That appears to be the biggest strength of the team (Coventry) who have been the most consistent winners in the EIHL era...
Was Rasto's signing down to sentimentality? Dunno - don't think any of us can know either way. He certainly brought some major positives to the team last season... maybe Mike Ellis wanted to continue with that - which is certainly understandable.
Thing is - Neilson & McAslan were also re-signees, just like Rasto. Sentimentality there? I wouldn't swap either of them... definitely top-class re-signings. Bringing back the likes of Patrik Wallenberg and Robert Stancok... those were "ex players" (rather than re-signings from the previous year). Wallenberg - a definite success, can't complain in the slightest there. Stancok? - a bit more disappointing...
So when you look at the returnees overall - I don't think that there's a solid argument in favour of the 'sentimentality' factor.
Personally, I'm still not convinced that the problems have been down to Rasto. It is noticeable that our worst defeats have occurred when the defence went AWOL, and that when the D were actually concentrating on their primary job (defending!) then Rasto was able to concentrate on his primary job, and did a pretty good job of it.
But that's a fan viewpoint (as with all others expressed on this forum) - looks like Mike Ellis saw a lot more and saw differently. Hardly surprising, that. And since he's the coach... it's his call.
I suppose it goes to show that Mike Ellis isn't getting complacent on us... nor is he (again) afraid to go against 'fan favour'. Can't really argue with that attitude...

I agree with Shaggy - Mike Ellis is doing his job at the end of the day.I don't think thet ME keeps players down to sentimentality - it was mentioned on another thread Danny Meyers was kept on as he's a mate - and now Rasto was too?!At the end of the day as peeps keep saying it is a business and his job is to get the best out of it - if the team fails he has and I doubt anyone would keep staff on that are detrimental to business, because they are mates - and the same applies to players
And before I get slated is there any possibility that rasto may play another role in the team?

I agree Shaggy, Im not convinced that the problem lies solely with Rasto, but on the other hand do you feel totally confident when Rasto wanders, when he's facing one on ones etc. I know I don't. It's been more luck than judgement that more goals have not been scored against us in my opinion. Sorry to see him go, he breathed fresh air in to a suffocating team last year and for that Im grateful but he's not the same player despite the defence this year.
