I'm reading the below book currently, and it asks the question (as England did in 2015) "What makes a winning team?". There are some very subtle answers too. Given that we know what doesn't, what does make an EIHL winning team? What's actually important, rather than "nice to have"? Which are the causes of winning EIHL teams and which are the effects? A settled and productive main scoring line? Having an "MVP" type forward (or two)? Few player movements? A statistically excellent netminder? A mix of LH/RH D men? NHL experience? A mix of players? A "good" captain? A coach with EIHL experience? Good face off stats in all (or some) zones? Consistently good PP/PK? Having a lot of PP time? Scoring a lot in the first period? Being able to hang on to a lead? Being able to claw back first period deficits? "Character" players? A recognised "policeman"? Not conceding 5 on 3 PKs? For years, Steelers have had good netminders, solid D, a mix of forwards, and never seem to know when they're beaten. Giants generally have a stellar top line, a "stud" D man, and excellent netminding. Devils have few movements, excellent continuity, and sign specific role players. I don't necessarily have any/all of the answers, but it might be a decent discussion? Opinions welcome. Attachments:

All depends on Besko, he didn’t have a good pair of QF games. Could go either way. 4 of the 6 goals conceded were on the powerplay including 2 on a 5 on 3 penalty kill, we were number 1 over the season on PK so a bit of an anomaly in that series, if we stay 5 on 5 we have every chance of being successful. Given the Panthers had the lowest pp chances in the league in the regular season, you’re probably ok…

Difficult to see past a Giants win, but if they can keep the top line quiet and stay out of the box, anything could happen.

Good question. Enlighten us mere mortals? Nights out before a game. It’s gone on for years So, half the team are in the Legend the night before a game? If true, that's a lack of discipline in the team, not a sponsor issue. That's not what was alluded to, that the high-ups did what a sponsor wanted rather than what the coach wanted?

Who and how can a sponsor have a say on what happens on ice? Good question. Enlighten us mere mortals?

If anyone genuinely thinks Anderson (15 points in his first 42 games) and Sorenson (24 in first 42) have had good enough seasons to warrant a second chance, I think I may respectfully disagree. Pretty telling that Izacky is the best point-per-game player this season, and the player who left before the 2/3 GP point of the season is still the leading goal scorer by 5 goals at the end of the season. It's been a very poor season, and a few half-decent performances in the last month don't change that.

And nothing to do with being thinly veiled pot shots at others on the forum I'm sure. Whatever makes you happy and gets you through the day and makes you feel superior.? Though I'm sure they are more than capable of defending their comments. I thought you would have been more like to comment on Panthers victory over Guildford.... Silly me but then I'm not surprised One upmanship and all that. Steady on, old bean. Hit a nerve? Thinly veiled potshots are what this forum is all about most of the time. (Not that the above was one at all.) Just, as said, an observation that sometimes what is almost universally held to be "the truth" is, in fact, nothing of the sort. 99% (not literally, but you know exactly how I mean it) of posts on here about BO'C criticise him defensively. Similarly for Lacho, but the other way around. The complete reverse appears to be true this season. If anyone gets uptight about it, they can "defend" themselves. Though I'm not sure how you defend an opinion that is countered by facts which show the opposite. As it happens, I thought the home leg was entertaining hockey, played physically, at a fast pace. Money well spent. And if Panthers had played like that all year, I expect they'd have been above 7th. You?

Just an observation about received wisdom.
"Defensive liability" Ben O'Connor ends the season at +33, whilst "GB's best defensive forward" Rob Lachowicz, on the same team, ends up at -4.

“The Giants got the lead early in the game with tMark Cooper 20th goal of the season at 05:35, taking a pass from deep within the Giants' defensive zone from Matt Foley, breaking into the attacking zone and beating Ty Taylor clean to put the hosts. The Clan though they'd equalised later in the period, however, the goal was called back after review due to a distinct kicking motion.”
5 grammar/basic errors and a smattering of poor style ones. 8/10. Excellent effort.

I guess the question would be, when did the writer write that time-saving sentence? 5 minutes to go? After the second? After the first? Last Sunday night?

“ This win means that there no is no mathematical possibility for Belfast Giants to win the league title this weekend unless the Flames drop points in their fixtures.”
Translates as
“It is absolutely mathematically possible that Giants could win the title this weekend.”

All these video review rules, it's no wonder the refs don't know what they're doing. You can’t help feeling if the rules were correctly drafted, unequivocal and clearly explained and communicated, there wouldn’t be a need for all these clarifications…

It still doesn't wash with me I'm afraid.. why would the arena charge panthers thousands for a cancelled booking when it could remain empty anyway? Because, by the same token, it could be full of people watching a gig, or darts, or something else. Contingent bookings are anywhere's least favourite? Can I book a table for 6 people at 8pm? Lovely. We'll only be there if we don't get battered in town, though. Keep the table free just in case, will you...?

In all honesty I can’t recall them saying that single day tickets would be sold at a later date. If they didn’t, then I’d say it is a reaction to poor ticket sales Exactly what I thought too. Good....perhaps after two poor POFW years and a fan survey they’ll finally have a rethink about play off and cup formats. And that's perhaps why it was useful to fill in. www.pointstreaksites.com/view/eliteicehockey/latest-news/news_498183Whilst I don't want to get all factual, day tickets were available in January in 2018, which was the last play off weekend before last year's. The play off format has been a weekend at a single venue every year I've been a fan, which is 30+. Almost every fan I can think of has literally known nothing else. Why does it need rethinking?

"Payton Frantti's attempted wrap around hit Drydn Dow and went over the line to put the Blaze ahead with 2:46 played at the Dundee Ice Arena, but the hosts were level at 10:16 through the aforementioned Dow on a loose puck after Jonathan McBean redirected Erik Naslund's shot to leave Paavo Hölsä stranded. “ That’s a contender for most horrific sentence in an EIHL match report all year. And it has some pretty stiff competition. “Attempt at a” would have left the meaning much clearer than “attempted”. And at least *some* punctuation might have been nice?

Really not buying this hype about Jones. He started off shaky got hot but now is pretty cold again. If he isn’t good enough for Belfast he should not be good enough for us much better netties around the league than jones & debeau. He has gone a bit colder lately, but mostly due to some pretty awful defending. To be fair, Giants swapped him for who has turned out to be the standout goalie in the league. Good business whoever you're swapping for him. Panthers signed him as a worthy replacement for Berry. Also good business, it turns out, with all due respect to Berry.
