Fankhouser injury forces Phoenix move for Fone Sunday, 20th January 2008 Manchester Phoenix number one netminder Scott Fankhouser returned from Belfast on Sunday nursing an injury sustained in his sides 6-2 loss to the Giants on Saturday evening. Speaking on Sunday evening, player coach Tony Hand confirmed, “Scott picked up the initial strain late in the first period, but battled bravely on to finish the game. He was sore afterwards and that prompted a series of ‘phone calls to try and secure a suitable replacement in time for next weekend’s home double header against Cardiff and Nottingham.” Hand added, “Andy (Costigan) and myself rang a number of people on Saturday night and we’re pleased that we reached agreement with the Cassidy Coventry Blaze to secure the services of Steven Fone for next weekend. We’ll obviously keep a close eye on the situation with Scott once our own medical team has examined him and given their verdict. Naturally, we’re hoping he’ll be back as soon as possible.” GM Andy Costigan added, “The move to bring in Steven Fone is in no way a slight on Adam Summerfield or Benn Schofield who have jointly taken over the back-up role and who have been training up with the Elite League team. They still have games for their respective Under-18 and ENL teams and with us battling to ensure our playoff berth, it would be unfair to put them under that kind of pressure. Steven Fone is in his second season with the Blaze and played previously in the Elite League and this is the right decision. Adam and Benn will continue to train with us and that alone will continue to help their development for the future.” www.manchesterphoenix.co.uk/news/s/1054_fankhouser_injury_forces_phoenix_move_for_fone

Rublivsky in shock return
21 January 2008
Hull Stingrays new signing Sergiy RublivskyCOACH Rick Strachan insists Sergiy Rublivsky still has a chance of helping Excel Hull Stingrays into the Elite League play-offs.
The Ukrainian joins a Stingrays side now eight points off the play-off places, having lost a high-octane battle with eighth-placed Basingstoke 7-6 after overtime and penalty shots.
Referee Paul Staniforth chalked off Lee Mitchell's penalty shot, judging the puck's forward momentum to have been halted by keeper Curtis Cruickshank on its way into the net.
It meant Stingrays fall a point further behind the play-off places.
Rublivsky now has 17 games to help Stingrays bridge the eight-point gap to Bison, starting next Saturday in Sheffield.
Having initially stalled on a deal due to finances, Stingrays finally agreed terms with the 28-year-old Ukrainian late on Friday.
Rublivsky is no stranger to Hull, having played the last two seasons, but was not offered a contract in the summer, joining rivals Newcastle instead, only to be axed last week.
Strachan said: "We originally spoke, but couldn't agree a contract.
"We finally agreed one on Friday night and he's joining us this week.
"I watched Sergiy on TV the other night, and I didn't think he was given much opportunity to do his stuff.
"He wants to prove a lot and he's a guy who can get to the net and shoot the puck.
"That's something we are lacking right now, I'm sure he's going to help us.
"There's still lots of hockey left before the play-offs, we can only keep on going and see what happens."
Rublivsky missed last night's epic battle which turned into a real rollercoaster ride for a packed Hull Arena.
Stingrays had 90 per cent of the goalless first period pressure.
Basingstoke turned the tables to lead 2-1 at the end of the second with goals from Brad Cruikshank and Greg Chambers to Jake Riddle's sole effort for Stingrays.
However, the third period had to be seen to be believed.
When Greg Owen made it 3-1 with 13 minutes left it looked all over.
Rob Rankin scored for 3-2, but Danny Stewart put Bison 4-2 in front on 47.59.
However, Stingrays hit four from Riddle, Lee Mitchell, Slava Koulikov and Rankin to lead 6-4 with less than four minutes left.
They held that lead until 90 seconds from time when Bison pulled their goalie and Stewart and Derek Campbell scored in quick succession to send the game into overtime.
When overtime finished scoreless, the breathtaking clash went to penalty shots.
Rankin and Riddle and Stewart and Chambers all had their shots saved.
Cruikshank netted Bison's third and when Mitchell's attempt was controversially disallowed it meant Basingstoke took the extra point.
"What a rollercoaster" said Strachan.
"We dug ourselves a hole, battled our way out, but then let our guard down and they scored. It should never have got to overtime."

The Daddy is back for Cardiff Devils
Posted by Terry Phillips on January 26, 2008 9:18 AM
CANADIAN defenceman Dion Darling is back with Cardiff Devils.
Darling, a 6ft 3ins D-man from Edmongton in Canada, flies in next Wednesday and will play his first match at home to Nottingham Panthers. That is the same match in which netminder Phil Osaer and player-coach Gerad Adams will be back. Darling, a former NHL draft pick for Montreal Canadiens who is nicknamed 'The Daddy', played for Cardiff Devils last season, while he has also played for Panthers and Sheffield Steelers in Britain. He has been playing senior hockey in Canada this season plus training regularly. Coach Adams had been looking throughout North America and Europe for the right player. It had been thought Dave Ianazzo or Lucas Komarec could be coming back, but the Devils have opted for solid D-man Darling. Brent Pope will return to retirement after helping out the team and will again take up his main role as bench coach. This weekend, the Devils play Manchester Phoenix, away tonight, and Sheffield Steelers, at home tomorrow. For the full story on Darling's return see today's South Wales Echo. What's your view? Is Darling the right man to help launch a Devils' play-off challenge.

Cory boost for Vipers Jan 17 2008 by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle NEWCASTLE Vipers head coach Rob Wilson today welcomed back centreman Cory Morgan for a third spell with the Metro Radio Arena side. The Canadian goalscorer will bolster Wilson’s roster and will provide a major boost to the rest of his locker-room as well as giving Morgan the chance to bag a half century of goals for Newcastle. Morgan arrived at the Vipers in 2005 for the first time when 16 goals in 30 games helped the team to second place and laid the foundations for the play-offs in 2006. Back then Vipers triumphed to lift the silver but Morgan missed out through a knee injury and returned to Canada. He was back for the 2006/7 season when he scored 26 times and made 27 assists, but Newcastle failed to even make the play-offs and Morgan headed home to join the Canadian Fire Service. Wilson told the Chronicle: “We’re delighted to welcome back Cory for the third time as he gives us what we need at the moment. “He is a popular guy in the locker room too and going into the run-in for the play-offs he’s a great signing. “We have been looking for players for some time but we always said that we didn’t want to rush into things. He’ll be delighted to be back as well. It gives us another option.” Meanwhile, Morgan said: “I have been on the phone to coach Wilson about 30 times in the last few weeks! “I love the club and cannot wait to pull on the Vipers jersey again and start scoring goals for the fans. “Newcastle’s a great club and we certainly have a chance of glory in the play-offs.” www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/ice-hockey-news/2008/01/17/cory-boost-for-vipers-72703-20360472/Oh no he isn't!

Archer signs pro contract 28/01/2008
James Archer signs with the Blaze on a full time basis.
Cassidy Coventry Blaze Head Coach Paul Thompson, confirmed that he has called up two way contracted James Archer on a full time basis to the end of the season.
Blaze have been one player down since the retirement of Michael Tasker and after seeing Archer in action for the Blaze in last week's Best of British Challenge against Newcastle, Thompson believes that he can fill that gap.
"He's been with us for the best part of three seasons on two way contracts", said Thompson, "and it was always my intention of bringing him fully into the fold. Tasker's retirement meant that we have an opportunity to bring in a British player and Archer really fits the bill.
"He knows all the guys really well and he is going to bring us energy. He has a lot of talent and now he has a fantastic oppoatunity to showcase it at Elite League level. It's his chance to cement himself a full time position on the Blaze roster for the future."
Archer has been playing for the Sheffield Scimitars in the English Premier League but will immediately relocate to Coventry to join up with the Blaze at practice on Tuesday morning.
He scored Coventry's opening goal against the Vipers in the Best of British Challenge and earned the team's Man of the Match award

Morgan pulls out of Vipers deal: transfer deadline 72hrs away
News posted: 29-01-2008
Rob Wilson faces a busy three days this week searching for a new forward to boost the Mobilx Vipers play-off run-in. Canadian Cory Morgan signed for the Metro Radio Arena based club a little under two weeks ago but has today pulled out of the deal.
Wilson returned with his players in the early hours of Monday morning following a fantastic two-win weekend, but was straight on the phone to players and agents in search of a replacement for Morgan.
"I feel very let down," said Wilson today. "He was very keen to come back, we'd agreed the deal and gone as far as getting the work permit and arranging his flight to the UK. Then out of the blue he calls me and says he can't come for personal reasons.
"I have to respect those reasons, but the timing of the decision leaves us out of pocket on his flight and now I have to try to find an adequate replacement before the signing deadline on Thursday."
