Koulikov makes Stingrays return Slava Koulikov has rejoined Excel Hull Stingrays - with Austrian forward Gerhard Gottfried leaving the bmibaby Elite League club. Koulikov, 29, left Stingrays for Basingstoke Bison in the summer but recently asked to be released for personal reasons. Stingrays coach Rick Strachan agreed a deal with the Russian-born forward after deciding not to offer Gottfried a permanent contract, the 27-year-old registering one goal and two assists in 11 games during his one-month trial. link

Joseph will excite Hull fans 29th November 2007 Coach Rick Strachan believes new Excel Hull Stingrays signing Marlon Joseph "will make things happen" on the ice. The 22-year-old power forward, from Winnipeg, will make his debut in Saturday’s bmibaby Elite League encounter against Sheffield Steelers at Hull Arena (5.30pm face-off). Before turning pro, Joseph played three seasons in the Maritime Junior A Hockey League. In 105 games with Miramichi Timberwolves and Yarmouth Motormart Mariners, he posted 50 goals and 53 assists and accumulated 323 penalty minutes. Joseph then joined Tulsa Oilers of the Central Hockey League last season, registering 11 points and 86 penalty minutes in 35 games, before signing for Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees where he picked up 10 points and 79 penalty minutes in 26 games. Strachan said: "We have been battling for too long with a short bench. We need a fresh body who will give us some energy and make things happen and Marlon can do that. "A few of our guys have played against him and he was on the same team as Dennis Maxwell for the last year or so and they have all said the same thing. Marlon skates well, he has decent hands, he finishes his checks and he can fight. "With [Cole] Byers injured, that is an element we have been missing. Some teams have tried to intimidate some of my smaller guys - they wouldn’t be doing that if Byers was out there. The opposition are going to know when Marlon is on the ice. Every team needs one of those guys." www.hullstingrays.co.uk/

Panthers part company with Rasty! 05/12/2007 As expected coach Mike Ellis has confirmed the departure of Rastislav Rovnianek. Having now seen new signing Tom Askey in action twice the coach has decided to stay in the line-up himself pending the arrival of a new "skater" and that means it is time to release Rastislav from his contract. Everyone at he club wishes the Slovakian netminder well for the future. He will always have a place in the club's history books after his heroics lifted the play-off crown last season. No-one will forget the penalty-shot-shoot-out king from last season! panthers.co.uk/modules/News/SEFS/ID.581/SEFE/ViewNewsItem.asp

05/12/2007 FORWARD Paul Cabana has quit Excel Hull Stingrays to join a German club.
From the HDM: The former NHL draftee Canadian has told club bosses he’s unhappy with the team’s form and is no longer enjoying his time in Hull after arriving in the summer. Cabana’s decision takes place with immediate effect, meaning the 29-year-old – the club’s third top points scorer – will not be in the line-up for Sunday’s visit to Cardiff. It is just the latest in a series of bitter blows for Stingrays, who have struggled with a season-wrecking spate of injuries to key players. Club owner Sue Pack admitted it is a severe kick in the teeth for the small-budget team, currently enduring a run of 13 defeats in 14 games. She said: "Paul has had a great offer from Eispiraten Crimmitsc, who want to take a look at him on a trial basis straight away. "He's nearing the end of his career and he wants to give this a shot." Pack admitted losing "model professional" Cabana will leave a huge hole in Stingrays' armoury, given he has notched a quarter of the team's goals this season. "It's a blow, but I have always said when a player doesn't want to be here it's not in either the club's or the player's best interests to prolong the situation, and that's the bottom line" she added. "No matter how tough it is or how much it hurts, or how much you don't want it to happen it's in the best interests of both parties to part company." Pack said given the Stingrays' recent run of form, she can understand why Cabana might look elsewhere, but insisted it had been equally tough on the rest of his team-mates. "It's tough on all the guys at the moment. It's tough playing for a losing team. You can say they are instrumental in what's happening, because they are the people on the ice. "However, no one in life wants to be a loser, whether you are a sports person, a nurse or doctor, and for sports people it's their livelihoods and they put their bodies on the line. "Paul has been very, very professional and we have had no problems with him in any way. I have felt he has given us all he can, but he has now reached the point where he wants to change and he's going to one of Europe's top hockey countries."

Krakty leaves the Vipers
News posted: 06-12-2007
Defenceman Petr Kratky has been released by the Mobilx Vipers with immediate effect.
The 6'5" blueliner from Most in the Czech Republic signed from Briancon in the summer, and impressed in the pre-season games with Coventry.
However, Kratky sustained a broken wrist in the Vipers first competitive game in Hull and missed several weeks of action.
On his return to the lineup, he scored one goal and two assists, while picking up 32 penalty minutes. He was unable to regain his form of the pre-season, and struggled with some of the pacier forwards in the Elite League.
Head Coach Rob Wilson said it was a difficult decision letting Petr go, but it was right for the team.
"I think Petr has struggled to regain his confidence since his return from injury. He certainly wasn't the same player from early in the season.
"He was getting caught out at times and on the whole I felt it's better for the team to make this change now.
"I have nothing but respect for the way Petr has conducted himself on and off the ice, he is a model professional. On this occasion, however, things haven't worked out for both parties. Petr leaves with my thanks for his efforts and best wishes for the future."
At the moment, there are no new signings on the horizon despite telephone lines glowing hot between Vipers HQ and agents in North America and Europe.
Wilson had threatened changes after a poor run of results which culminated in a 5-1 loss in the semi final of the Challenge Cup.
The Nottingham Panthers return to Tyneside on Sunday, just nine days after that Cup match as the sides meet again in bmibaby Elite League action. Face off at Metro Radio Arena is at 5.30pm, and tickets are available from the Arena box office.
Fans are asked to bring along a teddy bear or soft toy to take part in the Vipers Annual Teddy Bear Toss. When the Vipers score their first goal of the evening, fans can throw their soft toys onto the ice. Vipers players will then deliver these to children in Newcastle hospitals for Christmas.

Neumeier Released Posted: Friday 7th December 2007 The Coors Belfast Giants have officially released defenceman Troy Neumeier. Coach Ed Courtenay had to make a tough choice when injured players returned to the line-up over the last two weeks and unfortunately one player had to go. Neumeier has been solid all season long but the return of Roman Gavalier and Trevor Johnson meant that the Giants were carrying 11 imports when league rules only allow 10 in the line-up at any one time. Neumeier will leave the Giants having played 26 games, collecting 4 assists and 20 penalty minutes. Courtenay said "This has been the toughest decision I have had to make so far as a Head Coach. I honestly haven't slept in four days going over and over this in my head. It could have been one of three players that I had in mind and although Troy was the odd man out, I would like to re-iterate that he is a top class individual and came in and did the job he was expected to do all season long. I wish him the best of luck in the future." The Giants would like to thank Troy for his services this season and for his professionalism and dedication throughout his time with the team. www.belfastgiants.co.uk/newsarticleid=68.aspx

Neumeier Signs for Blaze 13/12/2007 Cassidy Coventry Blaze Head Coach, Paul Thompson today confirmed that he has completed the signing of defenceman Troy Neumeier. Neumeier started the season with bmibaby Elite League rivals, Belfast Giants and is expected to make his Blaze debut against the Giants in Coventry this weekend. Drafted by Vancouver in 1990, Neumeier's career has included four years with the Manchester Storm in the Superleague where he played with both Barrie Moore and Jonathan Weaver. He then spent five years with the Fort Wayne Komets in the United League, two of which were alongside current Blaze star Danny Stewart. He joins the club on a temporary contract until the end of December as cover for the sidelined Sylvain Cloutier and Curtis Huppe. Thompson was delighted to have Troy in the line up. "I'm really pleased to have picked up a player of Troy's experience. We're very lucky that he's agreed to come in until the end of the month to help us through our injury crisis. We feel very fortunate that he became the odd man out in Belfast and was let go by them. He's an out and out defenceman and that's going to enable me to keep KC Timmons playing as a forward whilst still rotating five defencemen. That's something we really need to do during this very busy period of games and bringing Troy in will let us do that." Neumeier was equally pleased to be joining the league leaders. "I was quite surprised to be let go by Belfast to be honest. They'd had injury problems and ended up by having too many imports on their books so one had to go and I really didn't expect it to be me. But that's given me an opportunity for another new adventure. It's really good that someone else was interested in giving me a chance and I'm really looking forward to playing for the Blaze alongside some guys from my past who became really good friends. I've played with Moore, Weaver, Cloutier and Stewart and it will be good to do that again." Neumeier's work permit has been approved and the club are just waiting for final international transfer clearance which should be received before the weekend. www.coventryblaze.co.uk/news_latest.php?id=60

Stingrays snap up Neumeier 31 December 2007 Hull Stingrays' new signing Troy NeumeierEXCEL Hull Stingrays have bolstered their play-off bid by signing former NHL draft Troy Neumeier. The 37-year-old Canadian defenceman started the season at Belfast before being released and joining league leaders Coventry Blaze as injury cover. With Blaze duo Sylvain Cloutier and Curtis Huppe fit again, Neumeier was looking for another club - and Stingrays stepped in with a contract offer. Neumeier will make his debut in Nottingham on Friday night, providing there are no last-minute paperwork hitches, along with fit-again Finnish defenceman Jani Virtanen. "Our defencemen are exhausted after logging up so much ice time and Troy was available" said Stingrays' coach Rick Strachan. "They're so tired they're having difficulty handling the puck and then they take a load of penalties, so right now both Troy and Jani will help the team a ton." The signing, while it will shore up a creaking defence, is not what most fans will welcome, given Stingrays' chronic lack of goals. They are averaging one a game, and rarely score more than twice. It means they are now five points adrift of a play-off place and only two above bottom club Edinburgh. However, Strachan is unrepentant and said: "Everyone will say 'we can't score goals'. That's true, but it takes five guys to score a goal, not just one. Troy and Jani will bring some freshness to the team." Strachan confirmed Stingrays are also still in the market for another forward, who will use up their final international transfer card for the 2007-08 season. The hoped-for goalscorer is proving elusive. But, after yet another shoddy showing in front of the opposition net over the weekend, it is vital Stingrays unearth another marksman. On Saturday, former Stingray Sergiy Rublivsky gave Newcastle a 23rd-minute lead, only for Jake Riddle to net the equaliser two minutes later. However, Todd Jackson scored twice either side of the second break for a 3-1 Vipers lead. Jeff Glowa netted 10 seconds from time, but Dave Longstaff scored on the empty net with one second remaining. Last night Stingrays' lost 5-2 to Nottingham, and were lucky not to lose by more. They were 3-0 down in 17 minutes and 4-0 down inside 21 as Kevin Bergin and Patrik Wallenburg scored twice each. Stingrays gift-wrapped Panthers' first two goals, and were so poor the word 'pathetic' barely covered it. They did rally briefly with a Lee Esders goal, but toiled to get enough rubber on the Nottingham goal to make Panthers' back-up keeper Geoff Woolhouse break out into a sweat. Matt Myers made it 5-1 with 10 minutes to go, before Stingrays got a lucky bounce for Glowa to make it 5-2 inside the final minute. www.sporthull.co.uk/hull_stingrays/news/displayarticle.php?ID=4380

Blaze star Tasker calls it a day 10/01/2008 Blaze star Tasker calls it a day. Cassidy Coventry Blaze forward Michael Tasker, today confirmed that he his to retire from the sport after this weekend’s two games against the Hull Stingrays. Tasker had planned to hang up his skates at the end of this season but a succession of injuries has forced him to bring that decision forward. Tasker’s seventeen year senior career saw him ice for Durham, Hull, Dumfries, Newcastle, Solihull, Coventry and the Great Britain team. He joined the Blaze organisation in Solihull in 1999 and went on to play four more full seasons for the team in Coventry. During that time he helped the team to capture the British National League and Play Off Double and captained the club following the retirement of another Blaze legend, Steve Chartrand. Tasker returned to Newcastle for two and a half seasons before deciding to retire during last season. Blaze Head Coach, Paul Thompson quickly lured him out of retirement and Tasker helped the team to win Elite League and Challenge Cup honours during the 06/07 season. Blaze Chairman, Andy Buxton admitted he will be sad to see Tasker finally hang them up. www.coventryblaze.co.uk/news_latest.php?id=84

Steelers fire Cornish Matsos lines up devastating finisheras his side slip out of KO Cup Bob Westerdale Sheffield Steelers 6 Coventry Blaze 6 (Blaze win 8-7 on agg) FANS' favourite Jeremy Cornish was fired by Steelers today as coach Dave Matsos finally accepted what fans and his boss have been saying for weeks: personnel changes are needed. Matsos, who had until this point has refused to publicly accept fresh recruits were essential, will now replace the enforcer with a skilled, free-skating forward, who is expected to join on Monday. It's an almost identical move made by Matsos last season, when he released Brett Clouthier. General manager Mike O'Connor told The Star: "You couldn't meet a nicer fellow off the ice than Corney, but we have to do what we think is right to improve the team. We need more skill." The incoming player, whose name has not been revealed to protect his current position at his north American club, is a devastating finisher and supplier. www.thestar.co.uk/icehockey/Steelers-fire-Cornish.3681980.jp

Cory boost for Vipers Jan 17 2008 by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle NEWCASTLE Vipers head coach Rob Wilson today welcomed back centreman Cory Morgan for a third spell with the Metro Radio Arena side. The Canadian goalscorer will bolster Wilson’s roster and will provide a major boost to the rest of his locker-room as well as giving Morgan the chance to bag a half century of goals for Newcastle. Morgan arrived at the Vipers in 2005 for the first time when 16 goals in 30 games helped the team to second place and laid the foundations for the play-offs in 2006. Back then Vipers triumphed to lift the silver but Morgan missed out through a knee injury and returned to Canada. He was back for the 2006/7 season when he scored 26 times and made 27 assists, but Newcastle failed to even make the play-offs and Morgan headed home to join the Canadian Fire Service. Wilson told the Chronicle: “We’re delighted to welcome back Cory for the third time as he gives us what we need at the moment. “He is a popular guy in the locker room too and going into the run-in for the play-offs he’s a great signing. “We have been looking for players for some time but we always said that we didn’t want to rush into things. He’ll be delighted to be back as well. It gives us another option.” Meanwhile, Morgan said: “I have been on the phone to coach Wilson about 30 times in the last few weeks! “I love the club and cannot wait to pull on the Vipers jersey again and start scoring goals for the fans. “Newcastle’s a great club and we certainly have a chance of glory in the play-offs.” www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/ice-hockey-news/2008/01/17/cory-boost-for-vipers-72703-20360472/

One in, one out as Wilson shuffles his pack 19th January 2008 Canadian forward Cory Morgan has signed up for his third spell with the Mobilx Vipers as coach Rob Wilson makes his final adjustments to his squad heading into the business end of the season. Morgan, from Blue Sky, Alberta, has netted 42 goals in his previous stints on Tyneside, and should be in the lineup a week today as the side tackle Basingstoke and Coventry on the road in successive nights. The signing of Morgan does mean that Sergiy Rublivsky's time at Metro Radio Arena is over. With EIHL clubs only allowed ten active imports on their books, coach Wilson had to release an import forward from the club's roster. "Ruby came in and has done a good job for us. However, with Morgs coming back someone had to be released. It's sad but that's how the system works. "Sergiy leaves with our thanks for his efforts this season, and we wish him the best for his future career." www.newcastlevipers.com/news/detail.php?id=1919
