COOKE RELEASED BY PANTHERS
11:00 - 03 August 2007
Nottingham Panthers have released young forward James Cooke - but coach Mike Ellis says the door hasn't been closed on a return in the future for the 21-year-old winger.
With Ellis trying to promote the new academy system at the club, he says Cooke's ice-time would be even more limited than it was last season.
"Quite simply, with me unable to guarantee James a regular spot, it would be a better option for him to look elsewhere," said Ellis.
"We will be seeing more and more youngsters coming through the development system and, at 21, it's time James got more games under his belt.
"He is also older than Mark Richardson, who I plan to hand a major role on the team.
"But this doesn't mean the end of the road for James with Panthers.
"If he proves himself elsewhere, he would be very welcome back."
Last season, Cooke, who was born in Canada but brought up in Nottingham, scored three goals plus six assists, and had 19 penalty minutes.

Looks ok, one thing that does stand out is his time in Australia, 8 games played and he got 8 goals and 17 assists for 25 points!!

I watched an ice hockey game in Australia when I was in Brisbane last year. The standard of hockey is very poor. A lot of the games are quite high scoring, with the low standard. At least there was a couple of fights to keep me entertained.

Starke aiming to make his mark with Phoenix Tuesday, 14th August 2007 Montreal-born forward Sean Starke is the latest signing for player/coach Tony Hand, and the Manchester Phoenix supremo believes he's signed a player with real potential. "Sean's name came my way a couple of weeks ago," he said adding, "and from the checks I've made on him, I think he could be our surprise package this year. He had an excellent career in college hockey registering a point a game over four seasons and with a season in Germany before three years in the United Hockey League, he's ready for the challenge of the bmibaby Elite League, I'm sure." www.manchesterphoenix.co.uk/news/s/0/872_starke_aiming_to_make_his_mark_with_phoenix.html

Former Phoenix triallist gets the call Wednesday, 15th August 2007 Manchester Phoenix have handed a late contract to British forward Nick Whyatt, four years after he trialled for the club in the inaugural season. Phoenix player coach Tony Hand said, "I wanted to bring in a little extra depth if I could and talked with Davey Graham about a couple of British guys. Davey suggested we talk to Nick as he'd coached him previously in Solihull and felt he do a job for us on the third line. I spoke to Nick and he jumped at the chance to join us." Originally a product of the Nottingham junior system, 23-year old Nick Whyatt has played the last two seasons in the English Premier League with the Solihull Barons and Telford Tigers. Standing over 6ft tall and weighing 170lbs, the left shot wingman described himself as being, "on top of the world," on signing to play for the Phoenix. www.manchesterphoenix.co.uk/news/s/0/874_former_phoenix_triallist _gets_the_call.html
