Watched the stream and was a very determined performance by the Lions. Did Blackburn expect to come and take an easy win, you would have thought so, but they lost last time they were in the building, albeit by one goal.
So they complained about the decisions, the answer to that was have better discipline and stop taking penalties.

A couple of seasons ago the Lions were getting a mauling from a number of teams including the Hawks and agreed they do have a good set up as regards the rink but I think they have more underlying issues. Like a number of teams the old guard have moved on and development may have taken somewhat of a back seat due to the blockage caused by the reliance on this gradually diminishing resource. Financial resources also play an significant part as our local Lions know only too well and some teams have found this out to their cost, possibly including Blackburn. I did note more face cages than I have noted in the past on the Hawks bench and I believe they were missing a couple of more senior players.

NIHL 1 Games this weekend:
Saturday 01.10.22
Solway Sharks v Solihull Barons Sheffield Scimitars v Whitley Warriors
Sunday 02.10.22
Blackburn Hawks v Solway Sharks Sheffield Scimitars v Deeside Dragons Widnes Wild v Solihull Barons Whitley Warriors v Nottingham Lions (Face off 5.30pm)
The Lions take to the road for their second away meeting with the Warriors having narrowly missed out on their last outing up at Hillheads in a thrilling game. The Warriors have lost one game to date against against Solway Sharks and have certainly upped their game since that defeat by giving the Widnes Wild a bit of a hockey lesson taking them down on Widnes home ice 1-8. They will certainly be fired up for this encounter especially after the Lions superb performance against the Blackburn Hawks last weekend. Noted Luca Sheldon backed up for Panthers against Dundee so the lad has certainly had a bit of a taste of the big time.

Tonight's Results:
Blackburn Hawks 2 Solway Sharks 10 Sheffield Scimitars 4 Deeside Dragons 5 (O/T win) Widnes Wild 5 Solihull Barons 1 Whitley Warriors 11 Nottingham Lions 2
Deeside open their season with a win at Sheffield
Solihull Barons had a miserable weekend with 10 against at Solway and 5 more against at Widnes tonight.
Solway flying with yet another 10 goals at Blackburn tonight.
The top three of Solway, Widnes, and Whitley had a solid weekend of ice hockey culminating with the Whitley Warriors tearing the heart out of the Lions with a storming 11-2 win tonight. Although not really expecting the Lions to get too much from this game I hoped for a tighter scoreline but it was not to be. The first and third periods sort of met my expectations as the Warriors are now definitely warmed up to the season and up to speed. The score was 3-1 in the first with Zak Yokoyama getting the goal for the Lions. The second period is definitely worth consigning to the bin as the Warriors were allowed to run riot scoring 6 unanswered goals. Going into the third the Lions managed regroup and dig deep, yes losing the period 2-1, but grinding out a more creditable performance in that final period.
Goal scorers: Zak Yokoyama and Jack Crowston
It certainly gets tougher on the road as the Lions next two games are at Widnes Wild and then into more dangerous waters as they travel up to meet the Solway Sharks. The Lions travel to Solway on Saturday 15/10 and following on from that long journey they then return to Nottingham and prepare to meet the Deeside Dragons on home ice on Sunday 16/10.

NIHL 1 Games this weekend:
Saturday 08.10.22
Widnes Wild v Deeside Dragons
Sunday 09.10.22
Solihull Barons v Billingham Stars Whitley Warriors v Deeside Dragons Widnes Wild v Nottingham Lions (Face Off 5.30pm)
The Lions are on the road again with their first visit to Widnes. It would be true to say that the Lions have exhibited a tendency to struggle against the Wild with the recent home game a good example. That particular game had a real element of contraversy about it with some of the officiating coming in for some scrutiny and comment. The game was rather feisty on occasions as frustration on the ice came to the fore with a number of players involved in scuffles and ,of course, this led to a mounting penalty tally. Tough game against last year's third placed team but hopefully the Lions will rise to the occasion and acquit themselves well.

eiha.co.uk/news-sutton-v-nottingham-and-other-nihl-discipline-updates/Nottingham Lions 2nd team gets awarded a 5-0 win and several lengthy suspensions handed out. Lions player Tyler Poole gets 6 games for leaving the bench, 8 games for 2 fights (4 each), 8 games for abuse of officials, and 5 games (2+3) based on disciplinary points. So by my maths a total of 27 games.

Sounds somewhat chaotic up in Sutton with as you say Tyler certainly topping the suspension table in that game. A shame really because Tyler had in the past put in some useful shifts for the first team. The second team is a stepping stone to the first and hopefully due to the length of the suspension Tyler does not decide to hang up the skates as that would be a real shame. I noted that Sutton as well as losing the points due to icing an ineligible player they also racked up well in excess of thirty games of suspensions including a couple for the coach.

Tonight’s Results:
Solihull Barons 9 Billingham Stars 3 Whitley Warriors 8 Deeside Dragons 2 Widnes Wild 4 Nottingham Lions 1
Widnes got back to winning ways with this home win but had to put up a real battle against a more determined Lions. First and second periods went to the Wild with one goal scored in each. The Lions struck back in the third through Zak Yokoyama to reduce the deficit to one goal but the Wild got their third and finished with an empty net goal to secure the points.
Some relief at Solihull as the Barons, who have lost their last two games, hit back with a very decisive win over the Stars. Whitley made it look easy as they inflicted the Dragons first loss of the season.

The Nottingham Lions have their first full weekend of ice hockey with a visit to Scotland to play the Solway Sharks. With the Sharks opening up a solid lead in the league this might prove one of the most difficult games to date Solway having already taken the points in a 1-8 defeat of the Lions in Nottingham early in September. In a Sharks recent home game they devoured the Solihull Barons hitting them for 10 so our lads will receive no quarter as the Sharks like racking up the goals, perhaps independence might solve the Solway dilemma? On Sunday after the long journey home the Lions play a home game against a rejuvenated indeed resurrected Deeside Dragons who appear to have put together a quite strong squad a squad that managed a 4-6 win away at Widnes Wild, no mean feat and that’s for sure. The Lions are going to have to fire on all cylinders to gain some points this weekend.
FACE OFF 7.15 pm.
No other fixtures available due to the EIHA failing to get their ducks in a line. The new system via Spordle that has been trumpeted about since the beginning of the season is yet to go live. One lives in hope.

Finally we have the fixtures in NIHL 1 for this weekend:

Sunday 16.10.22
Solihull Barons v Blackburn Hawks Billingham Stars v Widnes Wild Whitley Warriors v Solway Sharks Nottingham Lions v Deeside Dragons (Face off: 7.15 pm)
Half term so a good chance to bring the family for a night of ice hockey at a very reasonable price. It would be great to see a good crowd supporting the Lions who are always appreciative of you turning up for their games.

Solway continue their blitz on teams with a 9-1 victory over the Nottingham Lions. Following a long old haul up to Scotland the guys managed to contain the Sharks to 3-1 in the first period. The Sharks pulled further ahead in the second period and went into the third with a 5-1 lead. In the third with the Lions flagging somewhat the Sharks added 4 unanswered goals to their tally. The Sharks do face a sterner test tomorrow night as they travel to meet the Whitley Warriors.
The Lions next game is tomorrow against the Deeside Dragons with a 7.15 face off.

Managed to catch up briefly with Matt Bradbury to get a comment or two about the game up north of the border. Matt felt that for about half of the game the Lions were holding their own against some very experienced players but at times elements of vulnerability began to show and that is when their experience came very much to the fore. There were certainly goals that they would want back but overall Solway showed why they are topping the league and appear to make generally light work of a number of the opposing teams. Matt did say that he felt that the Sharks could be held to a tighter score line but that would require a team to put in a full 60 mins of intensive work and that for some of the teams is a big ask hence some of the scores. Due to the Panthers losing their no1 keeper Matt was asked For a keeper as back up and Matthew Bloor filled that slot. At around 10.00am on Saturday just prior to the Lions setting off to Scotland Issac Ballinger the u18s keeper who lives in Coventry agreed to join the Lions meeting the team part way up north. The youngster got half, of the game against the Sharks and, I believe, will be travelling once again for the Lions home game against Deeside Dragons this evening. Now that is dedication folks.
The only goal scored last night against the Sharks came from James Shaw.

Tonight’s Results:
Solihull Barons 7 Blackburn Hawks 3 Billingham Stars 6 Widnes Wild 3 Whitley Warriors 2 Solway Sharks 1 Nottingham Lions 7 Deeside Dragons 5
The Lions take the points in a keenly fought game tonight against the Deeside Dragons a game that certainly swung both ways but the battling Lions really dug in to take a deserved win. Deeside full of confidence came to Nottingham on a mission having been missing from the hockey scene since their demise under the most traumatic circumstances a couple of seasons ago. The usual problems occurred with poor management and overstretching their resources as the main sponsor failed and this led to their collapse but they are back and have strung together some reasonable results. Their home rink is in the final throes of preparation so ice hockey will be back in Deeside fairly soon, hopefully, and the good crowds they used to get will also be back. Tonight’s game was a big one for the Lions as they have spent the last three games on the road against the top three from last season and coming home with nothing in the bag regarding points so a lot of pressure for this one on the home team. The first period saw the Dragons open the scoring but with the Lions hitting back but the period slipped away to the visitors as they went in 1-2 to the good as the period ended. In the second the Lions pushed on and took the period 3-2 and a second period ending tied at 4-4 and all to play for in the third. In the final period the Lions made it 5-4 before the Dragons struck back to tie up the game once more. More was to come as the Lions dug deep taking the lead in the last 4 mins of the game and with 58secs to go we’re awarded a penalty shot which Zak Yokoyama converted for a 7-5 final score line and the points won. Given that the Lions had played in Scotland last night arriving home in the early hours they came to win and the team certainly deserved this one and that’s for sure.
Scorers: Zak Yokoyama 2, Toby Fisher 1, Jack Crowston 1, Tristan Grimshaw 1, Jacob Race 1, Ben Wilson 1.
No stats available for the assists which has proved somewhat annoying as they are certainly equally important, hopefully this will be rectified if and when these become on stream.
A big shout out for a big man as Benjamin Wilson collects his first goal in about 5 years, worth the wait was it not.

NIHL 1 Games this weekend:
Saturday 22.10.22 Billingham Stars v Blackburn Hawks Solway Sharks v Widnes Wild
Sunday 23.10.22 Widnes Wild v Billingham Stars Blackburn Hawks v Deeside Dragons Solihull Barons v Whitley Warriors Sheffield Scimitars v Nottingham Lions (Face off: 5.10pm)
The Lions take the short trip up to Ice Sheffield to meet the Scimitars for the first time this season. The Sheffield team have not had the best of starts to their season but their results to date are not the yardstick to judge the Scimitars as they do have the players that are capable of causing upsets. The Lions must go into this game prepared to give 100% as anything less might be their undoing. The Lions showed last Sunday against the Deeside Dragons what the are capable of as the Dragons turned up with a team full of very experienced players and the Nottingham team battled to a tight but well deserved win and a good spread of goal scoring within the team. The sort of commitment the Lions exhibited last Sunday should see them through against a number of teams in this division as long as they put in the minutes and maintain the intensity in every game.

Results from last night:
Billingham Stars 5 Blackburn Hawks 2 Solway Sharks 5 Widnes Wild 2
After Solway’s 2-1 loss against the Whitley Warriors last Sunday that put the Warriors at the top of the league by one point the Sharks bit back with a home win against the Wild taking them back to the top by a single point. No game for Solway today but the Warriors are at the Hobs Moat rink tonight to face the Solihull Barons with a win for Whitley enabling them to leapfrog over the Sharks and back to the top of the league.

Tonight’s Results:
Widnes Wild 1 Billingham Stars 5 Blackburn Hawks 7 Deeside Dragons 3 Solihull Barons 3 Whitley Warriors 5
Sheffield Scimitars 1 Nottingham Lions 3
A decent away win for the Lions up at Ice Sheffield. The Lions dominated the game but failed to convert their chances other than the three goals to get the win. At the end of the day our guys did more than enough to secure the points and that is what counts in any game. That is the third game won to date with hopefully a lot more to come. Good to see Toby Fisher grabbing a brace with Zak Yokoyama wading in with the other goal.
Period scores: 1-2/0-1/0-0. Lions MOM: Jordan Wright
Whitley Warriors take back the top place with their away win at Solihull and Blackburn Hawks turned over the Deeside Dragons with an impressive home win.

Games in NIHL 1 this weekend:
Saturday 29.10.22 Solway Sharks v Blackburn Hawks Sheffield Scimitars v Widnes Wild Billingham Stars v Nottingham Lions
Sunday 30.10.22 Solihull Barons v Deeside Dragons Billingham Stars v Whitley Warriors Nottingham Lions v Sheffield Scimitars
The Lions have two games this weekend commencing with a road trip to the north east to play the Billingham Stars who presently sit in third spot in the league and showing some quite good form with a wins over the Solway Sharks and Widnes Wild to date. Last season the Stars were one of two teams in the NIHL 1 that Lions failed to beat so that should spur the lads on to try and bring home something although granting that this will innevitably be an uphill task. On Sunday we welcome the Sheffield Scimitars to the NIC for their first visit of the season to Nottingham. The Lions are presently holding the upperhand having taken the points in a 1-3 victory at Ice Sheffield on 23.10.22. In conversation with Matt Bradbury he said that that game was certainly tighter than expected and with the rivalry between Sheffield and Nottingham these games will always have an element of drama but nearly always prove entertaining. Two points or more would be a great weekend's work from our guys.

The Lions started well with a tied first period 1-1 with Toby Fisher scoring the Lions goal. Following the shock of the first period the Stars began to warm up and took the second 2-0. Into the third Billingham really opened up taking this final period 5-0 ending the game with an 8-1 home win. That third was a real killer and this has happened on other occasions as the team lose some of the earlier intensity. Hopefully on home ice tomorrow and putting in a full 60 mins they will achieve a better result against, I am sure, a Sheffield Scimitars determined to cause an upset here in Nottingham. Lions MOM Toby Fisher.
Still awaiting results from tonight’s games, as are others, due to the non appearance of the new results system promised by the EIHA.

An interesting rollercoaster of a game tonight against the Sheffield Scimitars with plenty of drama and a good crop of goals for both teams. The first period saw the Lions race into the lead with a goal at 14secs followed by two further goals that saw off Brandon Stones the Scimitars goalie with ex Lions Tom Hovell taking over between the pipes. Hovell held the team steady with no further goals in the period. Into the second with the visitors scoring their first goal but the Lions soon put the pressure on scoring four goals and ruining Tom Hovell’s evening. Into the third and this is when the fireworks commenced with the Lions hitting major penalty problems leading to them playing around eleven minutes of the final period short handed. This situation provided the Scimitars with plenty of opportunities and they made the most of the situation taking the final period 1-3. Final score 8-4 to the Lions. A feisty affair as expected which provided some excitement for the supporters and two points for the Lions. Scorers: Zak Yokoyama 4, James Shaw 2, Toby Fisher 1, and Jack Crowston 1
Whitley Warriors took the honours in the north east tonight as they eased past the Billingham Stars 4-1. Solihull Barons managed to shut out the Deeside Dragons with a solid 7-0 win tonight.
Remaining results from Saturday’s games:
Solway Sharks 5 Blackburn Hawks 2 Sheffield Scimitars 1 Widnes Wild 3

Just a quick rant before I start on the fixtures this weekend. I have spent the last hour visiting club sites to find out who is playing who this weekend as the EIHA have not updated their rather pathetic gameday information, so here goes:
Saturday 05.11.22 Solway Sharks v Sheffield Scimitars
Sunday 06.11.22
Widnes Wild v Deeside Dragons Billingham Stars v Solihull Barons Sheffield Scimitars v Blackburn Hawks Nottingham Lions v Whitley Warriors
Whitley Warriors take their first trip of the season to the NIC having already met the Lions up at Hillheads on two occasions to date. Although losing both games there was a distinct difference outcome wise as the Lions met the Warriors for their first league game and lost by 2-1. By the time the Lions revisited the Warriors they had a few more games under their belts and it showed as they were now up to warp speed taking the Lions by 11-1. At this time the Warriors sit at the head of the table tied with the Solway Sharks missing out on the top spot purely on goal difference. A formidable outfit headed up by David Longstaff a local hero for both Whitley and GB as a player and still working his magic with the Warriors, as he has done for several seasons, as Head Coach. The Lions against the Sheffield Scimitars sucumbed to three pp goals in the third period last Sunday in a game they were totally dominating winning 8-4 on the night but playing around eleven minutes of that period on the penalty kill. I will be totally honest here, against the Warriors the Lions will certainly receive a more punishing response should that level of indiscipline occur in this game. Our guys have to stay out of the penalty box to have the remotest chance of gaining anything from this game and even then it's going to be one hell of a task. The Lions can cause shocks having done this on a number occasions in the not too distant past lets hope that this might be one of them. Face Off: 7.15pm

Results to date for this weekend:
Sat 05.11.22 Solway Sharks 11 Sheffield Scimitars 1
Sun 06.11.22 Widnes Wild 8 Deeside Dragons 6 Billingham Stars 6 Solihull Barons 5 Sheffield Scimitars ? Blackburn Hawks ? Nottingham Lions 4 Whitley Warriors 6
The joint top of the league Warriors and facing a Lions team missing 8 senior players must have thought tonight was going to be an easy ride but it certainly did not work out that way. Head Coach Matt Bradbury was left to draft in players from the u18s plus 1 16yr old also making his senior debut to face this toughest of oponents and the team put in a sterling performance making life somewhat difficult for the Warriors throughout the game. To run the Warriors this close was a major achievement and showed something of the depth within the junior section of the Nottingham Club. Matthew Bloor had an exciting 18th birthday acting as back up for the Panthers earlier in the day he was called upon to ice following an injury to the Panthers No 1 netminder, the Panthers won. He was on the bench for the Lions tonight and entered the game in the third period following on from Luca Sheldon in nets. Several of the Lions players drafted in tonight had already played a game up at Hull during the afternoon so they had a good warm up before the main event on their return to Nottingham. Period Scores: 1-2/1-2/2-2 Scorers: Zak Yokoyama 2, Jack Crowston 1, and a debut goal for Dan Martin. MOM: Michael Berehowsky

Games in NIHL 1 this weekend:
Saturday 12.11.22 Solway Sharks v Deeside Dragons
Sunday 13.11.22 Widnes Wild v Blackburn Hawks Solihull Barons v Nottingham Lions Deeside v Solway Sharks (Game postponed due to ongoing work at Deeside Rink)
The Lions are on the road again taking the short trip to the Hobs Moat to face the Barons. This game has always had a bit of an edge that on occasions has exploded into life in a sometimes unsavoury manner but lets hope on this occasion that this is not the case. The Barons sit in 4th spot and last weekend they lost away against a very strong Billingham Stars in a 6-5 game that required overtime. It was noted that the Mulcahy brothers between them scored 3 of the Barons goals in the Billingham game and have certainly commenced making their presence felt since they recently got back together and onto the Barons roster. As with any game, particularly away, and within a sometimes hostile setting a game such as this is a difficult one to call. I just hope that the Lions make a good showing and that there are no expulsions or injuries in this, and of course, any other game in which the Lions are involved. (Face Off: 5.30pm)

Statement from Deeside Dragons has highlighted the problems they are facing due to the Deeside Rink work not being completed. The present situation has had obvious financial effects as the team have, as yet, no home ice therefore no revenue and are having to play all of their games away from home. The expectation was that the first eight games of the season wpuld have to be played away from home until the upgraded facility was available but due to an overun on the contract cracks are obviously beginning to show to the extent that this Saturday's game at Solway Sharks has had to be postponed and a large number of future games rescheduled.
