The Lions faced the Barons tonight and as usual it was a hard fought encounter and some interesting officiating to add into the mix. The Lions team were always going to be up against it and tonight as the Barons Mulcahy brothers/Ottoson line proved a combination too strong on the night for our guys to handle. The score was quite convincing the Barons taking the game 8-2. Matthew Bloor started in nets with the u18s keeper Isaac Ballinger stepping up in the final period stopping 16 of the 17 shots faced in that period so a creditable performance from him. Period Scores: 3-1/4-1/1-0 Scorers: Toby Fisher 1, Max Hirst 1 X The results from other games not available as yet. No rant tonight about the results service as it remains non existent, so no point really.

NIHL 1 Games this weekend:
Saturday 19.11.22 Solway Sharks v Whitley Warriors
Sunday 20.11.22
Widnes Wild v Sheffield Scimitars Whitley Warriors v Blackburn Hawks Nottingham Lions v Billingham Stars
The Lions are back on home ice to face the Billingham Stars who pay their first visit to Nottingham. The Stars presently sit in a comfortable third position behind the Whitley Warriors and the Solway Sharks. Earlier in the season the Stars were the first team to take the points off the Solway Sharks and are having probably one of their best run of results for a couple of seasons. The Lions, last season failed to beat the Stars, and their first game on Billingham ice on 28.10.22 our guys suffered an 8-1 result in a game where up to the end of the second period the Lions were still in the game being only 3-1 down. On that occasion the final period proved to be the Lions undoing as Billingham really upped their game totally dominating the Lions in the final 20 mins of this encounter. Billingham will come to Nottingham fully intending to pressurise the Lions into submission and to be fair they do have the depth of experience that enables them to apply that sort of pressure for the full 60 minutes so the Lions just better be ready and up for the challenge that’s heading this way. Our guys can certainly make life difficult for a good many teams in this division should they put in the effort, use their skills and speed, and fully focus on the job on the night. Good to know that Tom Dermott was back on the ice training on Thursday evening following a number of weeks absent through injury, hopefully he will be game fit very soon. Face Off: 7.15pm

Weekend Results:
Saturday 19.11.22 Solway Sharks 6 Whitley Warriors 5
Sunday 20.11.22
Whitley Warriors 8 Blackburn Hawks 2 Widnes Wild v Sheffield Scimitars (No result as yet) Nottingham Lions 4 Billingham Stars 7
Billingham just have this habit of hitting the Lions in the third but up until that period our guys were well and truly in this game. In the first the Warriors struck within two minutes but before five minutes on the clock the Lions scored through Maxim Hirst and the period ended tied at 1-1. Into the second with end to end play and opportunities for both teams the period ending with a 3-3 score line and all to play for in the third. Goals scored in second period by James Shaw and Jack Crowston. As I stated in my game preview the Stars are a tough 60 minute playing team with an ability and the experience to grind out results and once again the third period reinforced that point as they closed the game out with a 1-4 game winning period. The only goal for the Lions in the third was scored by Jack Crowston taking his tally in this game to two goals. Jacob Race was MOM for the Lions.

Last weekend results:
Saturday 26.11.22 Sheffield Scimitars 1 Solway Sharks 16
Sunday 27.11.22 Blackburn Hawks 3 Whitley Warriors 2 Solihull Barons 1 Solway Sharks 8 Widnes Wild 5 Billingham Stars 2
A superb weekend’s work for the Solway Sharks as they crush both the Scimitars and the Barons on the road and head back to the top of the league. The two biggest surprises were the wins by both the Hawks and the Wild against stiff opponents. The Wild are now tied for third spot with the Stars but have two games in hand over them so an interesting battle in store as the season progresses. Whitley’s poor result at Blackburn shows that they are quite vulnerable particularly as they see the Sharks continuing to achieve strong results.

NIHL 1 Result: Saturday 03.12.22
Solway Sharks 8 Billingham Stars 0
The third placed Stars were emphatically beaten by the Sharks adding 8 to their recent tally of goals and now having scored 32 in their last three games. The Sharks have conceded just one goal in these recent three games and, that was on the road against fourth placed Solihull Barons last Sunday.

NIHL 1 Results: Sunday 04.12.22
Billingham Stars 6 Blackburn Hawks 3 Solihull Barons 7 Sheffield Scimitars 0 Widnes Wild 3 Solway Sharks 4 (OT)
Either the Wild hit pretty well top form or the Sharks, following their recent goal fest, took their collective foot off the pedal, but whatever Widnes grabbed a well earned point and not many teams are doing that this season.

NIHL 1 Games this weekend:
Saturday 10.12.22 Deeside Dragons v Nottingham Lions
Sunday 11.12.22 Billingham Stars v Deeside Dragons Blackburn Hawks v Widnes Wild Whitley Warriors v Sheffield Scimitars Nottingham Lions v Solihull Barons
The Nottingham Lions after a couple of weeks free of hockey, training only, comeback to a very challenging weekend with a road trip over to north Wales to the newly opened Deeside rink to face the Dragons then on home ice Sunday to face our old friends the Solihull Barons. For the Dragons this will be their first game on home ice and from what I gather the fans are eager to fill the rink for what they hope will be a first home victory and the start of their rise within the league. Deeside had to put a stop to their season as they could only play away games the financial hit forcing this situation as home ice was well behind schedule therefore no income for the club. This will be a tough one as the Lions lose some players to the u18s as they have a game in Billingham on the same day. When the Dragons visited Nottingham earlier in the season the Lions ran out winners in a very closely fought 7-5 result. The Dragons certainly have depth having had a number of very experienced ex Dragons returning to the club having moved around following Deeside's demise a couple of seasons ago. On Sunday we have our visitors from down the A42, the Barons, here in Nottingham for the first time this season and on past showing this will prove an equally tough challenge for the Lions who have sruggled in recent times to squeeze a result from a usually feisty but talented team. The Lions have to attempt to take the sting out of the Barons star forwards particularly the Mulcahy brothers and Nic Ottosen as these three have proved quite lethal strike force and particularly difficult to deal with as other teams have found. The Barons are presently in 5th position with Widnes in their sights one place above them. THe Lions first game away to the Barons ended with a 8-2 scoreline. Face Off: 7.15pm.

Tonight’s Results:
Deeside Dragons 5 Nottingham Lions 3
The Dragons got their first home win against a depleted short benched Lions tonight but the boys held Deeside for two periods just missing out in the third. No information regarding the Lions scorers in this game but period scores were 1-1/2-2/2-0. Given the limited bench strength and against strong opposition the Lions acquitted themselves very well. Tomorrow the Lions meet, on paper and in fact, tougher opposition as the Barons hit Nottingham hoping to grab enough points to move up the league table.
Tomorrow night has both a sad and joyous note as Jacob Race plays his last game for the Lions but moves on to commence training with the RAF, so this young man maybe flying higher in the future. Good luck Race and thanks for the part you have played for the club throughout your junior and senior career.

An update from yesterday’s game against Deeside Dragons. Paul Glossop took the reins as Matt Bradbury has to miss this weekend’s games following an injury at a Lions training session leading to a concussion. Matt was advised to rest over the weekend. Paul was not too impressed with the officiating last night as two of the goals for Deeside were as a result of some possibly doubtful calls. The Dragons fifth goal was into the empty net. The Lions scorers were Zac Yokoyama 1, James Shaw 1, Tom Dermott 1. Five of the Lions have been selected for the GB universities ice hockey team who will be travelling to Lake Placid for the World Universiade. Two ex Lions players are also included in the squad. Results from last night’s NIHL1 games:
Billingham Stars 7 Deeside Dragons 6 (OT) Blackburn Hawks 3 Widnes Wild 2 Whitley Warriors 7 Sheffield Scimitars 1 Nottingham Lions 0 Solihull Barons 5
Following their win against the Lions the Dragons put up a real battle against 3rd placed Stars missing out in overtime. The Hawks appear to be upping their game as they narrowly beat the Wild who are presently two places above them in the league.
The Lions faced the Barons at a greater disadvantage as a couple of first/second line players pulled out of the game at the last moment. The reshuffle of the lines held as best they could but the uphill battle proved just too much and the Barons took the points. As always the Lions put in the minutes and in the circumstances holding the Barons to five goals was as good as it could get on the night. For the Barons the Wild losing their game proved encouraging as they target that fourth place in the league.

NIHL 1 Games this weekend:
Saturday 17.12.22 Deeside Dragons v Blackburn Hawks
Sunday 18.12.22 Deeside Dragons v Sheffield Scimitars Solihull Barons v Widnes Wild Whitley Warriors v Billingham Stars Blackburn Hawks v Nottingham Lions
The Lions take to the road in their last game before the Christmas break. The Hawks having had a slow start to their season and having taken an 8-1 loss on their visit to Nottingham have got their act together and have put up a strong showing of late including beating second placed Whitley Warriors. For the Lions this will not be as easy as that last meeting and they will definitely need to be on fire to get a positive result up in Blackburn. Last season the results between these two ended with the Lions having the edge over Blackburn but the Hawks still ended that season just ahead of the Lions in the league again due to their shock win against the Warriors. The Lions as a whole will need to turn up for this one and I just hope we do not end up with last minute withdrawals as we did last Sunday and scupper any chances of a positive result. There are obviously no guarantees even with a full turn out of players but the Lions would at least be in with a stronger chance of success with a full squad on the bench on the night. We shall see.

NIHL 1 Weekend Results:
17.12.22 Deeside Dragons 6 Blackbutn Hawks 5
18.12.22 Deeside Dragons v Sheffield Scimitars (rescheduled) Solihull Barons 4 Widnes Wild 3 Whitley Warriors 7 Billingham Stars 2 Blackburn Hawks 9 Nottingham Lions 4
The Lions travelled to Blackburn with a short bench due to circumstances beyond their control that might be described as somewhat of a perfect storm when you look at the situation.THe Div 2 Lions had a home game and the u18s were away at Bradford, whilst netminder Matt Bloor was back up with Panthers and netminder Luca Sheldon was over in Canada. With only one netminder available that being 17 yr old Isaac Ballinger and with two defencemen becoming makeshift forwards the Hawks saw their chance and took it with both hands. Young Isaac had a real baptism of fire and being the only netminder knew he was their for the duration of the game no matter what and to be fair he held up very well given the pressure he was under. Although the Lions outshot the Hawks and pressurised throughout the game the absence of numbers and experience took it's toll as the Hawks took the first period 5-2. The second ending 3-1 with the third being tied at 1-1. Goal scorers: Jack Crowston 2, Tristan Grimshaw 1, Zak Yokoyama 1. SOG 27-33. Spoke briefly with Matt Bradbury who felt given the situation the team found themselves in they performed well and he has no complaints about their effort and commitment. Lines had to be shuffled to meet the challenge but he felt that had circumstances been different that the Hawks were definitely there to be taken and could not understand how that team managed to beat second placed Whitley Warriors a few weeks ago feeling that either the Warriors had a bad night or that a different Hawks team turned up on that night? He did say that it was made very apparent that the Lions were not entirely welcomed up in Blackburn with the incidents of last season in Nottingham and the severe penalties they justly deserved still creating some disquiet amongst management and fans, to put it mildly, leading to a somewhat hostile environment. I can't wait for the Hawks next visit to Nottingham hopefully on a night when a full Lions team will take to the ice and a more positive scoreline is achieved.
Well that's it for 2022 ice hockeywise for the Lions as we look to 2023. Humbucker the Lions and the Nottingham Junior organisation wish you a Christmas full of joy and a hopefully happy new year.

To clarify, the major penalties to the Blackburn Hawks players and Head Coach by the EIHA last season were reduced on appeal but remained significant. The aftertaste unfortunately persists up in Blackburn hence the slightly more than icy reception when the Lions hit town.

NIHL 1 Games this weekend:
Sunday 08.01.23 Deeside Dragons v Sheffield Scimitars Nottingham Lions v Widnes Wild (Reschedule ?)
As recently mentioned the GB Universities Ice Hockey Team are travelling to the Universiade over the pond to Lake Placid and the Nottingham Lions, having a number of players at university, have suffered the loss of five key players who will be away for about three weeks. This situation along with league commitments for the u18s and the Div 2 Lions have left the Div 1 Lions scratching around for a competitive squad to meet the challenges over the period these key players are unavailable. As far as I am aware the Nottingham club have requested a rescheduling of the next three games but to date I have heard nothing of the plans over this period other than the postponement/cancellation or rescheduling of the next home fixture against the Widnes Wild. I eagerly await further news regarding future fixtures. I do think that most hadened hockey fans prefer to watch a tighter more competitive game and pay good money for that experience so why short change them by expecting them to watch a possible uncompetitive goal fest, obviously favouring the team fielding a full squad, against a scratch squad thrown together just to meet a league schedule? I fully accept that at times players are called up for national team duty but seldom have I observed a team having to provide five of it's key players during a season, one maybe two on occasions, but five that to my mind is too much for any team to manage. I just hope someone somewhere is taking proper note of this situation and actively seeking a remedy. Should I dare hold my breath??

Unless bench strength created issues that led to Deeside’s big loss to Solway I can only assume that Billingham may have hit similar problems over in Wales. Sheffield Scimitars found travelling suited them as they pushed Whitley all the way up at Hillheads having suffered at home against the Solihull Barons the day before.

The Lions first games for three weeks due to five players being away with the GB Universities Ice Hockey Team in Lake Placid. This weekend will be a real baptism of fire with a very tough on the road trip to Billingham followed by a home game against the Barons. To date the Lions have not taken a single point from either of these opponents. A great deal of pressure on the team particularly the returning players who may be somewhat hockeyed out and jet lagged, and that may turn out to be a possibly poor combination? You just never know with younger hungrier players on the night.

Sunday 29.01.23

As expected a tough call for a reunited Nottingham Lions after a three week lay off. A warm up game possibly against either Deeside or Sheffield might have been a good lead back into competitive hockey but that was not to be. Billingham have been putting up some good scores of late and with a formidable first line of Moss, Elder, and Sykes they are always going to be hard to hold and that was the case in this game. The Lions started well with a first period finishing 3-2 but the second and third went to the Stars 3-0, 2-0 for the 8-2 final score. Scorers: Ben Marples and Tristan Grimshaw.
At home to the Barons the Lions held well considering of late that the Barons have been scoring big in a number of recent outings. The Lions managed 30 shots on the Barons net but could only manage the one goal scored by Toby Fisher. Generally a good performance from the Lions but on the night a hill to climb that proved to be beyond them this time around. Period scores: 2-0/2-1/2-0

A comfortable and welcome win against the Scimitars this afternoon on the arena ice. Chances to increase the goal tally were there in plenty but the 8-2 win was still a very satisfactory outcome. Tomorrow will prove a tougher outing in more ways than one when the Lions take on our “friend” from Blackburn as the Hawks pay a second visit to Nottingham. The first game proved somewhat of walkover for the Lions but since that first meeting the Hawks have picked up some notable scalps whereas the Lions have struggled to pick up points. It will prove an interesting encounter with perhaps a few fireworks thrown in for good measure as the Hawks can certainly mix it with a good balance of skill, experience, and a gritty edge to their game. Back to today’s game and the scorers: Zak Yokoyama 4, Kieran Gibbs 2, James Shaw 1, and a first goal and MOM for Tyler Somerton.
