The Nottingham Lions travel to Humberside this Saturday to face Kingston Hawks. Sitting fifth in the table. The Hawks have managed some creditable performances one being a 4-4 tie in that cauldron of hockey against Solihull Barons down at the Hobs Moat Road, so they have shown that they are able to up their game. They will certainly be wanting some revenge for the 8-0 loss here in Nottingham on their first visit this season. They have been beaten by the resurgent Sheffield Senators but that means absolutely nothing. These are the games that can sometimes turn up with the odd surprise and the Lions will need to be at their ruthless best and take nothing for granted when the Hawks are at home.

One day I will get the team names right. Lions are away to the Stingrays of Hull and are having a tough old time going into the third period 3-2 down. It was 3-0 until a couple of goals from Betteridge and Wightman brought them back into contention in a game that was definitely getting away from the Lions. The Lions amazing run might just end tonight and the other teams will be watching this game and hoping for a slip up that brings a tighter tussle for the top spot.

The others in the league have got their wishes answered as the Stingrays have just stung the Lions 5-3 with an empty net goal as the goalie was pulled for the extra skater. I suppose it had to happen at sometime but onwards to the next game. Apparently the Lions were without a netminder as I believe the Panthers took Lions first choice NM to sit in Dan Green's place on the bench and the 18s were away at Telford. The Lions back up NM plays for the 18s so not sure who played tonight?

Sam Gospel did play this evening but the Lions apparently coughed up a couple of soft goals and conceded another via a 5 on 3 PP when the scores were even at 3-3 hence the need to pull the NM late in the game. There are no easy games and that was proven tonight. Fylde at home next week so a chance to pull it round and Solihull away after that so the Hobs Moat Road crowd will be looking to inflict another loss on the Lions. Lots of ups and downs to come in this season.

For anyone not going to Dundee on Sunday, there's still some senior hockey at home. The Lions are smarting from last weekend's surprise defeat away at Hull, but are still undefeated at home. And the last meeting of the two teams was a 7-4 away win, so we're hoping for a good victory. Face-off scheduled for 7:15pm in the Olympic Rink - ticketing information can be found here:- nottinghamlionsenl.com/2012/09/lions-v-fylde-flyers-h/

Sheffield Senators head the league as they took another 2 points today and Solihull continued their winning ways with a 3-8 win against the Kingston Stingrays. The Lions need the win at home against the Fylde Flyers to be at the top once again. The league is really coming to life as the battle for the top spot hots up. All of the teams can take nothing for granted as every point won or lost could prove critical. The Lions need to get back to winning ways so tomorrow's game is vitally important. The Lions face both The Senators and the Barons before Christmas and they are certainly the improving teams at the moment so sme big games on the horizon.

Final score Nottingham Lions 12 Fylde Flyers 0. The Lions are back on top with a narrow lead over the Senators and the Barons. Next week should be a real cracker as the Lions take on the Barons at Solihull. They last met last season with the Barons taking the homours at home and the Lions doing likewise in Nottingham. The Barons have only dropped one point at home this season with good wins against all of the top teams so the Lions will be facing a tough night at the Hobs Moat Road rink. Good win tonight so hopefully back on track?

The temperature appears to be rising down in Solihull as they await the Nottingham Lions this coming Sunday. It's their first meeting this season having both seen off tough opposition against the other front runners Deeside and Sheffield. This game promises to be a real battle and may lay down the marker for the rest of the season. It's a tight old rink is the Hobs Moat broadly similar in size to the old rink in Nottingham and with the supporters seated right against the boards is very noisy and intimidating to all teams visiting their venue. Testing times ahead for those players who have never visited the 'Barons Barn'. Good luck guys.

Just learned that the Lions have beaten Solihull 2-1. That is a HUGE win for the Lions, as they are the only one of the serious title contenders we hadn't met until tonight. Beating them in their own barn is even better, of course. Top of the table - both Lions and Panthers. Whether it lasts or not... that's something to savour.

great win at the Hobs Moat tonight. Out shot but came away with the points and that's what counts. Well done Flat's and Branin with the goals and Gospel, well what can you say? Need to prepare for the Senators now as they will be looking to put the record straight for them by taking points away from the Lions. It's defo not over until it's over whatever the fat lady sings!!!

Big, Big game on Sunday as the Lions take to the ice against their nearest rivals, in this area anyway, the Sheffield Senators. With two games already in the bag the Lions will be looking to maintain their record against a tough Senators team who are well drilled, skillful and having a good run of wins. As far as we are aware the Lions will be without Jose Leon for this game but Hunty and Christy Brown should be back for this top of the league encounter. From what we hear there are teams interested in certain Nottingham Lions players and are watching closely their progress this season. It might be that approaches are made before the end of this season therefore, if that is the case then the season might get even tougher as it progresses. Interesting times for the players, the club, and the coaches.

Big game, big result... Lions beat Sheffield 4-1. We went 1-0 up, but they pulled it level... but MoM Joe Wightman did what he does best, and with a couple of goals put the game out of Sheffield's reach. Nice way for the Lions to round off 2012!

Notice Sheffield had Steeldogs and Steeler's logo's on their shirts. Is there a big connection with help and coaching etc ? Or is it more for show and they get no more partnering/help than Lions and Panthers situation.
Would be interested to know

Hunty and Flats not there tonight but the lads got the result and with Solihull Barons beating Hull they now move into second place 4 points behind the Lions. In January there are further need to win games with the Barons visiting the NIC seeking revenge for their home loss to the Lions, a game they say they should have won given that they outshot Nottingham by a big margin. Sam Gospel proved what a prospect he is in that game and put in anmother good performance tonight. Joe Wightman added another 3 to his season tally tonight so a big well done to him and a deserved MOM. Overall a very solid team performance and 2 more points in the bag.

The Solihull Barons have signed a big, well known hard hitting defenceman, no other than the legendary Perry Doyle. He is a product of the Solihull junior system along with his netminder brother Steven. Both brothers were well known for an aggressive style of play that lit up a number of games against Nottingham and other clubs. Standing at near 6ft 8ins in his skates he will be a formidable challenge to our younger players. He did play for the Panthers and the Steelers so brings valuable experience to the club. If Hunty plays in the home game against Solihull in January he will be meeting up with an old team mate and adversary. Interesting times with some of the legends out there on the ice. A real hockeyfest in store I'm sure!

Depending on other committments I'd like to see that game! I watched both the Doyle brothers play many years ago, Steven was a bit of a psycho!

Old time hockey in Nottingham? What with Perry Doyle back at Solihull and scoring in his first game and with Hunty looking good in a Lions uniform we hear tonight that Stuart Parker has signed up for the remainder of the season. Stuart was a real goal scoring machine with Panthers, Barons, Bracknell and Blackburn and it is hoped that his experience and his nose for the goal will help out the Lions. He has apparently get in pretty good nick playing rec hockey and is coaching for the Nottingham Junior Ice Hockey Club. Good to see you back Stuart.

Didn't he score the first goal in the 92 Autumn Cup Final when we beat Hull 7-5? My first "big" game.

When mentioning the return of Perry Doyle to Solihull I forgot that Phil (Leapy) Lee is still turning out at 47 for the Barons and scored goals and from a D man that can't be bad for an 'old un.'

Massive month for the Lions with beginning with the final game away at Sheffield this weekend with the Senators going all out to avoid the whitewash having lost the three previous encounters. Deeside away on 20 Jan who have leapt into second place after a 6-4 home win against the much fancied Solihull Barons. The Lions have a home win and an away tie against Deeside having fought back from 3-1 down to get the draw 3-3. On the 27 Jan the Lions face the Solihull Barons who will be looking to get even after outshooting but losing 1-2 at home. This one is the first visit of the Barons to Nottingham this season. All of the above relish the chance to move up next season and this league is there to be won or lost by any of the top four if they become complacent or lose form.

Sheffield Senators away on Saturday face off at 4.30. I see the Sen's have signed two new players this week, one from the Div 1 Sheffield Spartans and Johnny Bell who played for the Lions last year but was not asked to return for this season. Johnny became a dad and family commitments have kept out of action for some while. He is a big fella is Johnny and is in to strengthen their defence. Should hopefully be a competative game because in two of the previous encounters Lions came from behind to win. Sheffield desperately want this one in the bag as they travel to Solihull to face the Barons on Sunday. They will be looking for at least two points from this weekend and probably their best chance will be in Sheffield unless the Lions make it four wins out of four, a tough call but it is possible if the Lions play to their full potential and keep focussed.
