End 2nd Titans 4 Lions 5
Josh Ward scored from a penalty shot as their player covered on the line. My texter tells me it's a close game.
The Match penalty in the 1st was for a High Stick that drew blood.
Will be able to confirm scorers later this evening when I get the gamesheet.

I wasn't happy either especially when it was obvious the coach sent Whyatt out with clear instructions to start a fight. Coach was lucky to still be on the bench at the end of the game! Spartans deserved the win

I wasn't happy either especially when it was obvious the coach sent Whyatt out with clear instructions to start a fight. Coach was lucky to still be on the bench at the end of the game! Spartans deserved the win Actually he didn't send him out to fight - he just didn't tell Nick not to! Barron was lucky to still be on the ice - he skated over to the Lions bench early in the 1st and clearly sticked Nick in the face - when Nick was still on the bench! Ref didn't see it but the Linesman did. He did report it to the ref but Boardman choose not to do anything. Perhaps Lions are sick of being pushed around? Everyone who watches the Lions knows how we play clean, we rarely cheapshot or do anything dirty behind the play. For once we decided we'd play like other teams do against us!! I don't agree with the fact that Spartans deserved the win - in fact NEITHER team should have taken both points - however if it hadn't been for Zimizodra I think we'd have comfortably beaten you. Our shooting was mostly on target and saved by Zimizodra - your shots were mostly off-target! The 2nd goal should never have been allowed to stand. Ben Bliss went down with a cut just in front of the crease - although not obvious what the injury was, it was clear he was injured - no player is going to stay down in that area, especially on a penalty kill!! Boardman ignored him and allowed the game to continue. All in all not a good game from the Lions - but we simply can't play in Sheffield! Since the opening of IceSheffield Lions have only won 3 games there (including the first ever game!) and for some reason we have a mental block or something about that ice. Still, sets the final run up nicely - and I think that if the Lions don't win the League then it'll be Whitley's turn.

Lions faced Kingson Jets last night - and beat them 12-2!
A slow start for the Lions saw them with pretty much all the possession and yet the 1st ended 0-0. However the scoring was opened after just 22 seconds of the 2nd period. A couple of errors led to the Jets being allowed to score 2 in the 2nd, but it was over as a contest at that point.
Lions put a further 7 past Tristan Rodgers in the Jets' goal in the last and the highlights were 2+2 for Colm Cannon, a hat-trick & Man of the Match for Ben Bliss, and Gareth O'Flaherty scoring his first goal in Lions' colours.
A weekend off before Lions face the Blackburn Hawks at home on Sunday 31st Jan.
We now have 7 games left, 4 at home and are still top of the League at this point. However, Whitley have 6 games in hand but still have to play Coventry and Telford twice.

Whitley play 2 of their games in hand this weekend - last night saw them draw 2-2 with Coventry at the Skydome, while tonight sees them in Blackburn. Also their game against Telford that was cancelled because of the bad weather will be played in Telford on 7th Feb for double points.

That's a killer point for Whitley to lose in Coventry... that puts them 8 points behind us with 4 games in hand... and if they won them all we'd be on equal wins. What's the next tie-breaker - goal difference? Hope so, we're way ahead on that score, even with them having played 4 less games (+60 for us, +32 for Whitley).
Doubling up in Telford? Oh, wouldn't that be a sweet result if Telford could come up with an upset there... ;D

Shaggy, it's not overall goal difference, it's results & goal difference between the teams - that's how Sheffield won the title last year as their goal difference was +4 (IIRC).
Currently the results between us are 1-1-1 and the goal difference is 0 (12-12).
Basically to win the title, both us and the Warriors need to win all of our remaining games and the game against each other in Whitley on 7th March is cruicial. Either team dropping points at any point between now & then could see the other team take the title. While Sheffield & Coventry are not totally out of the running, for either of them to win the League both ourselves and Whitley will have to lose every single game!
If the unlikely was to happen and Telford were to beat Whitley in the double point game then yes, it's a big step towards us taking the title.

Well, this changes things.......... Warriors lost to Blackburn tonight. Hawks won 6-5 despite being outshot 24-44.
Apparently Bentham threw his dummy out of the pram, but I have no more details...!

Hehe, I also know that Bentham got the GWG, so he can't be too bad can he?? Seriously, the Hawks are in town on Sunday night - Face off 7.30 at the Olympic Rink - prices are £5 for Adults, £4 for concessions (Inculding NUS) and £3 for Under 16's. For those that are not going to Belfast this weekend and won't have their hockey fix, please come along to support the Lions as they go for their 2nd League title in 3 years - and their 4th trophy in 3 years!

A hard-fought game tonight, and a close result... but thankfully the right one! Nottingham Lions 2 - 1 Blackburn Hawks. A scoreless first period, the Lions went 2-0 up in the second, but Blackburn just kept piling on the pressure and pulled one back with about 8 minutes to go. End to end stuff all night... perhaps not quite the best performance from the Lions (a few too many turnovers etc) and they gave up a fair few breakaways... luckily Rich Griffiths was equal to the task between the pipes. Both netminders (Griffiths for us, Danny Brittle for the Hawks) deservedly got the MoM awards. Lions are off up to Alty next Saturday for an away match vs Trafford Metros... and then Sunday 14th we host Telford (sometimes known as 'Telthug'... which gives a clue as to their playing style! ). The title challenge is still on!
