With very few exceptions, Shmyr only fights goons, only does it by invitation (rather than instigation) and ends fights rather than wins them. Add to this the fact that his hockey contribution is small and his coach won't allow him to fight and you're left with very little worth hanging on to.

Bring back Simoes! A low budget CHLer with nothing to lose. Youd need Shmyr then to back him up.
Ryan has only really been totally beaten once this season, not a bad record. Even Clouthier got knocked out this year. People mock his style but hes a big guy and picks his punches, I wudnt like to fight him! I agree hes been more of a policeman than a headcase but Ellis will not sign an out and out fighter he cannot control so it could be Shmyr or nothing...in which case I pray hes back. IF we get Lewis then great but its not that simple. Weaver is a better brit than Ferrara but theres a lot more to consider

I think us and Coventry have both proved this season that you can be succesful without an enforcer. My first choice for the Steelers would be Derek Campbell from the Vipers. Not the most gifted player but works his backside off and got a healthy output of points last season (66) oh and he can certainly throw his fists with the best of them! Not technically true though. Sheffield have Munn and Finnerty who will drop them. Although Munn isnt a recognised "enforcer" he is still a well known tough guy. Same as Coventry having KC Timmons. They also have 2 or 3 who will fight. I doubt that over the course of a full season it would be as successful for Sheffield for example than a month or 2 before the playoffs. Onto Derek Campbell, he's ok for a leight-heavyweight, against the likes of Bergin, Criukchank etc............... but put him against the likes of Payette, Shmyr, Clouthier, Lewis and he would get pasted! I never said they didn't have people that can fight its just we didn't have an enforcer when Cornish left. Steve Munn did stand upto Brad Voth when required but came off second best but at least Steve Munn is a pretty damm good d-man! I was really impressed with cloots in our playoff series against the Phoenix he seems to be turning into a good power forward who IMO could break the 20 goal mark next season.

Simmer would be a wasted space no matter how entertaining he was at times.... and besides theres more chance of platting fog than Simoes signing for Ellis

I cant believe there are so many rumours so early in this thread.
Oh, wait a minute. There are'nt.
Cant you create a new thread about the pro's and cons of enforcers rather than hijacking a thread that is meant to be about rumours?

With a look at his stats maybe? Not the whole story by any means but for an import forward (and one reputedly on a few quid at that)?

definately gives us more than the stats show, but some guys seem to be the go to guys to slate, needs to be allowed to enforce by ellis, but i feel he does a lot for the team!

I accept that he may have been useful as short-term cover on the D but that kind of underlines how expendable he is as a forward and a fighter. And as for being a target for criticism, you have to wonder how that came about don't you?

probably i feel because if correct wasnt let off the leash by ME and getting unwarranted stick for it, plays for the team on instructions!

Very good points oldman, Shmyr is a 100% team player. Everyone always mentions Pelts diving in front of the puck as an example of his commitment and work ethic yet Shmyr has been doing it for two seasons.
He is one of the toughest in the league, one clear loss out of about twenty five fights since being over here, there aint many guys with that sort of score card. Very useful on the PP, people on here always used to moan we didn't have anyone willing to get in front of net, he's your man. Also pretty useful on the PK, throws his body in front of the puck and has blocked countless shots. Always puts in the effort, I've very rarely seen him have an off game. If played on the forward lines for a whole season I'm sure he'd get round the thirty point marker. He was joint winner of the team spirit award in his first season so obviously good with the morale of the team. Finally he was from the CHL so I very much doubt he's anywhere near the top earners on this team.

Its not really rumours from the weekend though is it? Yes. Rumour was we are signing Lewis to replace Shmyr - surely people are now entitled to discuss who they would rather have?

the origin of the original (now much doctored in cyberspace and re-used with other names) photograph of the US church sign: 'Jesus saves, but Cote scores on the rebound' I don't think Cote was the origin of that - it has been around for decades with different names. However, he was a good player who would do a job for any team in the EIHL with the right guys around him. Unfortunately for us, once Tessier left and Darling got injured, he was expected to win key faceoffs, agitate, hit, score, set up, fight etc. etc. Too much for one man, especially one who was playing injured himself for a large chunk of the year. You're right about him not being the origin of the saying - that's been around since at least the 60's in the states. I was referring to a photo that crops up - with alarming regularity - on this and other forums of the US Church sign (if memory serves my correctly from his time with the Admirals; it featured in the local paper at the time) but now re-doctored in photo shop to add in other players names. You're not wrong about him being asked to be king of all trades that season - and he threw himself into all of them. When he's allowed to be what he does best - a face-off winning centre and play maker with a gritty fore-check to boot he's exceptional (as can be seen from what he's achieved when he's had the right players around him. And best of all he gives everything on the ice - injured or not - an ethos we have definitely lacked from some players over the years. Just the remote possibility of seeing him on a line with JoMo and Wally or Mac is enough to keep me up at night. can't help thinking that his mindset would fit with the ethic of players like Mac and Corey and that he'd make a great addition to the squad in teerms of someone for the youngster to emulate It's not without reason that he's captained many of his teams and that when Calle was out injured he was picked to play such a big leadership role. Man i wish he'd come back

It wouldn't surprise me to see Ben O'Connor going to a larger team this season, thought it would be Sheffield though.
Regarding DC, I blooming hope not! With them already having great firepower it would increase even more with DC in the line-up!
Makes you wonder who Thommo is tapping up with Team GB.
Hope Mike is doing the same!

I'd be VERY surprised if Ben O'Connor is at the Steelers for a few seasons yet, having spoken to Mike, Ben wants to prove himself as a player at this or a better level before he is accused of using his Dad's connection at Sheffield to get a contract.

be surprised if clarke goes to blaze as weaver and clarke would be with out doubt two of the top earners in the team (probably league) and they would have to cut back the expenditure on the imports

As much as I cant stand the man, I dont blame Thompson having a word with players whilst they are on GB duty. Frankly I would expect Simmsy to do the same as well on behalf of Shuff. If players are out of contract I dont see that they are doing anything wrong really. HL

Agree Morley, Mike O'Connor said a similar thing to myself a couple of weeks ago when I was asking him if Ben enjoyed his time in Edinburgh HL

I may be wrong but with Shields going to Belfast (Allgedly), the only other top flight Brits who will be looking for a new clubs is Clarkey, and Owen Weaver is on 2 years at Cov, tait also at Sheff, Phillips already signed, cant see Longstaff leaving Vipers, if Ellis is back I would expect Myers and Meyers to return to us.
That leaves a big bunch of good not brilliant brits such as Levers, Richardson, Moran, Sample, Hewit, Hill etec, etc who arnt world beaters but will do a good job on any teams 3rd line and step up and make a contribution when needed, to be shared out among the 10 teams
So I hope ME is out there targetting Clarkey or Owen

ellis will be on the case , make no bones, behind Thommo, Ellis is the most knowledgable coach regarding the brits so will chose well
