Have you ever read a more bitterly constructed article than that? You mean outside the Cage or Steel Talk? ;D

Just heard on 5 Live that Simon Jones is definitely out of the last test. England will choose between James Anderson and Paul Collingwood to make up their team.
Personally I'd go for Collingwood - adds much more to the side all round. Anderson is certainly a better bowler when on form, but when off form can be truly woeful - the last thing we need is for the off-form Aussie batsmen to have a few easy overs from Anderson to get their eye in. Better to work the other 3 pacemen harder and use Collingwood and Giles in a support capacity. Collingwood's fielding is excellent, a great catch or even stop could make all the difference if this test is as close as some of the others. His batting will also solidify our middle order, which could be crucial if we have to bat last and chase a total (or even bat out time) on a pitch that they are saying will be "a dream" (the words of Surrey captain Mark Ramprakash yesterday I believe) for Shane Warne to bowl on on the last day.
Probably means the selectors will plump for Anderson...

i would go for anderson because he is a pace bowler and a tail ender the same as jones but where as collingwood he is the same but he is a middle order batsman which vaughan and fletch might have to break up the pieterson flintoff partnership or the flintoff jones partnership

England's success has been based of agression. Therefore they should pick the bowler. Colly would be a defensive move.
Losing Jones is a really bad blow for us. This Test now looks like it could be decided by who wins the toss. We really don't want to bat last on this wicket and so have to win the toss. Only bad weather can force a draw.

Don't think we will though 115-3 at lunch aint a great platform to build on. Game wont go 5 days at this rate and that score is nothing like good enough. Two centurions required from the remaining 7 batsmen I reckon if we're to make the game anything like safe. Need a minimum of 450 in the first innings......

There was only one thing that was ever going to give Australia a chance to retain the Ashes and that thing goes by the name of Shane Warne.
This guy is PHENOMENAL, just as good now as he ever has been. We are in a right royal mess but Shane Warne deserves all the credit, cricket is a better game with him in it.

Shane Warne, the greatest cricketer EVER.
The way the man bowls is just incredible, sometimes he is just impossible to play.
Honours leaning slightly towards Australia here i fear. We can still do this though, come on boys.

i would say that he is the greatest bowler but not the greatest player ever He's not even the greatest Australian cricketer. Or the greatest bowler. Warney says that Murali will pass him as a wicket taker and it won't be for another 5-10 years before we can assess the likes of Warne, Murali, Gilly, Tendulkar, Lara and McGrath. On-topic: Disappointing day. Great that we won the toss but we collapsed twice. In the last 3 Tests we topped 400 and we need at least 400 again. MP is right in saying that we needed 450. Tomorrow morning is now crucial. We need 80 runs. We also need to bat time. Not just because we only need a draw but also because we only have 3 quicks and we don't want to bowl anymore than 65 overs tomorrow. It's very difficult for a team to bat 2nd when they're chasing 400+. Throw in that the Aussies would want a first innings lead and you feel that they must be targeting 500. Tomorrow morning is a great chance for G Jones to prove Fletcher right. The Aussies now are looking to bowl us out for 350 and be 50-0 at lunch. One other thing, Warne turns 36 on Tuesday. My mate and I spent our lunch breaks in Fat Cats watching the game and I asked him, "what are the Aussies gonna do when Warne retires?" His reply was simple, "lose!"

Agree with you Sunbeam about the current state of play. Despite Warne's brilliance, two of our top five batsmen (Vaughan and Pietersen) gave him a big helping hand with poor shots. Maybe neither would have gone on to make a big hundred, but if they could have hung around and contributed 60 more runs between them it would have made a big difference to the outlook. Trescothick gave us a solid start again, Strauss played a big innings and Flintoff made a contribution again but the rest were poor. We should really only be four wickets or so down for this score on the Oval pitch.
Still, it didn't turn out that way. Now it is up to Jones to put a few runs on the board and hopefully the tail can hang around and provide a bit of support. Realistically I think we will probably be bowled out for around 360 or 370. Then it is over to the bowlers - a bouncy pitch could be a help to Harmison and Flintoff, who may cause problems. No reason why we can't bowl the Aussies out for a similar total if things go our way but surely Hayden, Martyn and/or Clarke will play a big innings sometime?
Whatever occurs, it should be another fascinating day. Getting quite into the routine of listening to Test Match Special on t'Internet while I work and taking regular breaks to watch a bit of Channel 4 coverage (and rushing downstairs to watch the crucial incidents) - the joys of being self employed and working at home.

The Aussie plan: Be level by close today, End up scoring approx 600, Have England batting after tea tomorrow trailing by 200-250, Bowl us out (ie Warne bowl us out!) inside a day for no more than 300, Knock off 50 odd runs and win the match by 5pm(ish). So if it can keep raining today hopefull they'll be still 100 behind tonight. The odd shower tomorrow would also help and maybe they won't have us batting til near the close of play tomorrow. We'd then have to bat out Monday with a 250 run deficit. We won't be helped by bad light on Monday as the forecast is very good: BBC weatherweather channelmetcheck

We really do need to lose at least 3 hours to rain tomorrow to stay in the game. Either that, or find some solid batting from somehwere - we need to be able to bat for four sessions to make the game safe - Stauss can build an innings. Vaughn is capable of it but will he. Flintoff can occupy the crease but.... I'm disticnctly nervous

You know what MP...I'm not nervous!
I think the Aussies have dug their own grave by taking the light on Friday. We are still up by 100 runs and it will likely take till well after tea tomorrow for them to run up a 200 run lead, especially the way we are fielding, defending the boundary. The rain will also be around tomorrow and I just can't imagine where they will manufacture the scoring and the time from to win this game. Then again, I've been wrong before...

Parity on the first innings then. So a one innings match over 5 sessions to decide things.... Batting for 4 sessions is still the way to go Can't see us managing that though (Stauss gone already) so looks like being a tense finish tomorrow

Great day today for us. 98 overs tomorrow and so we need to bat for 60 overs. Of course there won't really be 98 overs as we can bowl our overs at a funeral pace. We can also bowl high and wide as this isn't one-day rules.
If we bat til Tea tomorrow then we'll have a 200+ lead which should be defendable. We shouldn't lose from here but this series has been so unpredictable!
