Agree with all the above, really shocking news. He's been a great player for Notts and would have played many times for England in the future I'm sure. Hopefully Notts sort out a testimonial game for him (it would be quite a novelty for cricket, despite being quite a common occurrence in football and ice hockey of course) as he deserves one last big send off. I can imagine the cricket loving public in Nottingham supporting such an event.

I thought I would put my two penneth in here. Yes a great achievement and Notts scraped back into the 1st division, harder then it should have been, but they are there. It was due to match saving innings from Billy Root and of course Chris Reid. A great effort from the team and coach Peter Moore - and back up staff over the whole season. What a fantastic keeper and unfortunately he seems to be almost the last in the line of outstanding keepers who can also bat. His catch for his 1000th catch at Leicester was one of his very best - he will be sorely missed. His batting has often rescued Notts when they have been in trouble - sometimes it seemed always in trouble at say 60 for 4 or 5 and the aspect will also be missed. Listening to him speak one can see why many think that as a person the will be missed. The handling of him as player by Duncan Fletcher leaves a lot to be desired, but then his absences from the England team allowed Notts members to witness a keeper in action who ranks with the very best.

For the Cricket enthusiasts.
My local newspaper shop run by the Patel family in Giltbrook had to close down.It was due to the recent opening of the Co-op establishment here. So the Giltbrook News, that was,has changed over (in the family name still)to a micro pub called....CAUGHT AND BOWLED.
I assume some Cricket nostalgia relating to their son Sammy will be in there somewhere. As well as copies available of his book in his testimonial year.
Just up from the entrance to IKEA on that same Nottingham Road. On the left opposite the GP practice....good news in case they are open and you've any injuries from a fall I guess.
