NEWS: The Lions will be playing Peterborough Islanders on two seperate weekends to decide who are the English National League Champions. Peterborough recently defeated Invicta over 2 legs, and were Playoff runners-up, being beaten by Whitley Bay 7-3 in Coventry.
The Lions will travel to Peterborough on the 4th May (6pm Face off), and the return leg will be in Nottingham on 18th May (20.15 face off, TBC).
We would like to see as many supporters as possible on both dates, and there will be limited number of spaces on the team coach to Peterborough.
Edited to confirm dates!

Finally the end of the season is in sight! I've enjoyed this season but the team's been generally kicking their heels for a few weeks, so it's good to have something to focus on again, especially as it's the big one

Excellent - bring your family and friends - that goes for everybody - as the Lions and Peterborough both chase a historic double*
*I'm ignoring the fact the Islanders will face Sheffield in the ENIHL Cup final for the purposes of comparison

with ref to the university national finals this weekend :- London win in final. A Nottingham lad has a double fractured leg after your semi. was watching this game and thought Id let you know it was ben wood that broke his leg, shame as he was the standout player in that game, maynard also got inured in the same game slamming into the boards playing for birmingham if i remember correctly.

Thanks for that. I was at IceSheff for the Sheffield v Invicta game, and to be honest anyone who was watching the university hockey got a better deal. I saw Colm Cannon and Tom Larcombe between matches, and caught some of Nottingham v Sheffield, so saw those two guys playing. I thought it was odd that Woody wasn't playing as well, guess this explains why. Hope you get better soon, and keep your pecker up mate (Coat on, taxi called)

Not bad considering Lions haven't played for almost 6 weeks. We'd also got players at Conference and out injured, and we drafted James Neil into the side.
Couple of the Peterborough goals were lucky, but then so were ours!
Lions' goals came from Sam Bullas, Chris Colegate, Brian O'Brien and 2 from Joe Wightman on his return to the team.

That was a crazy game... Peterborough had played the night before, so they were fully up to speed - and it showed. The Lions haven't had a game in about 6 weeks, and that REALLY showed! Trying moves that they would normally complete with little problem, but they just didn't come off... needed the rust blowing off a bit. The Islanders are older, bigger and stronger... the Lions are faster and more agile. Makes for an interesting match-up. The ice seemed good (from my perspective) but the boards - or rather the bounces off them - were absolutely insane... no way of telling what was going to happen. That made it interesting... but hopefully that will mean we'll have a bit of an advantage on the home leg (slightly larger ice for one thing, I think). Griff might want a couple of the Peterborough goals back = he made some good stops, but two of their goals were a bit excruciating - but the Peterborough netminder? What the HELL??? Apparently the Islanders didn't lose a single league game all season, but how the hell they managed it with him in nets is beyond me... flapping around like a landed fish, flailing about at any shot above ice level... if the Lions can get fully up to speed for the home leg in 2 weeks' time, they could hang him out to dry... ;D The Islanders' discipline looks well suspect as well - the slightest thing seemed to wind them up. Our lot were a lot better that way, although you couldn't tell it from the PIMs given out! We only had 2 officials, and many people will have heard the bad reputation of Blaine Evans as a ref... but he was straight and even - it was the other one (Hewitt?) who was the problem. Two minutes to a Lions player for breathing hard! (but don't worry, it's OK for Islanders to lead with the elbow... ). Could make things entertaining for the home leg, especially if Sam Bullas keeps on winding them up! (but you still don't get that hot-dog unless you score a hat-trick, Sam! ) Special mention to Joe Whitehelmet - sorry, Wightman! ;D - on his return to the team... and boy, did he ever strut his stuff, with 2 goals. Chris Colegate seems to get faster every time I see him play... although his goal (the fifth and eventual game-winner) has to have been possibly one of the most unbelievable he has ever scored... the goalie could have stopped it by just sitting down and doing nothing, but he flopped around and it just trickled in... Methinks the second leg - the final final FINAL game of the season! - could be more than a little interesting. Anything could happen...

A great win, and a pretty good game for a neutral, although I think both teams will be pleased by some aspects of their play and disappointed by others. My personal highlights? I'll give you three: 1. Seeing Kristian Simo on the ice having heard so much about him. He dominates the ice and is probably the best two-way d-man in ENIHL. 2. Seeing that Peterborough goalie James Moore's flamboyant style on the ice was matched by the shirt he was wearing after the game. 3. The intensity and spirit with which the Lions took the game to Peterborough and dominated them for long spells in their own rink, a rink in which the Islanders had not previously lost this season. Peterborough's gameplan was to try to intimidate the Lions and to draw retaliation penalties where possible, knowing that their physical game was backed up by the skills of the likes of Simo, Buckman and Mackintosh to name three. It worked at first, with the officials making lots of calls (and while I maybe didn't agree with all of them, they were at least trying to be consistent about what they called, and that's fair enough), but once things calmed down the greater speed and finesse game by the Lions won the first leg for us. Not that we weren't checking though - the hits that stick in my mind are all by d-men - Scott Glover dropped someone behind the goal, Jonny Bell had a running battle with Ross Mackintosh throughout the game, Tom Norton levelled someone with a hipcheck on the blueline in the second, and there is a picture via the Phantomsonline forum of the aftermath of a check by Joe Graham on Mackintosh. Both teams played with passion and intensity and with it only being a one-goal game, the second leg on May 18th is set up perfectly. Hope to see you there

Sunday's game is due to face off at 8.15pm. It's late because there is a Vipers game before it and that game cannot be moved.
I know it's a late one, but please make every effort to support the Lions as we try to take the League Championship and make it a clean sweep for the North! Peterborough have already lost the Playoff title to Whitley, beaten 7-3 in Coventry, and last weekend lost the ENL Cup to our rivals Sheffield - aggregate score was, IIRC, 12-7 to Sheffield.
The Lions hold a slender 1-goal lead, but we should have a couple of players returning to the squad after injury.

At the end of the first, Lions are leading 3-0 (8-4 agg.) thanks to goals from Wightman, Colegate and Graham. Dave Goodwin is the ref and I'm told that the Islanders are getting frustrated and are being outshot 17 to 3.

That was sweeeeeeeet! ;D ;D ;D All of the rust that the Lions had accumulated before the first leg was definitely gone by the time this second leg came around... and a one goal lead isn't much... so it was nice to make it a TWO goal lead inside of a minute. ;D We thought that the Lions could probably handle the Islanders on our bigger ice... being a much faster team, that sounded like we'd have an advantage - but I wasn't expecting it to make that much of a difference! I actually feel sorry for the Islanders... that's no less than three finals that they have been in this season - and they've come second all three times. But they were just plain outskated and outplayed tonight.... it was a joy to watch. Thanks to all of the Peterborough fans who made the trip up ... and to the Nottingham fans who turned up in larger numbers than normal - it's always nice to win a trophy in front of a larger crowd. I hope that any Nottingham fans who don't usually come to Lions games liked what they saw, and will come back for more next season... Nice to see a few 'famous names' as well - Mike Ellis and a very happy-looking Corey Neilson (does he EVER stop grinning? ) and friends... as well as Chris Ellis from BBC Nottingham. Hope you all enjoyed it. It's taken a while, but the Lions have seriously made their mark this season - winning ENL North and then the North vs South... best team in the ENL! ;D One season, two trophies - NO MESSING! ;D ;D ;D Now for a rest, and see what the lads can do when September comes around again...

I have a correction to those scorers (duff info ), Corfield's goal was scored by Calvert and the other goal was scored by Robinson. (Is that right, Ed?!) (Any excuse to quote that scoreline! Brilliant!)

Ellis taking over as Lions coach then as we know he has a nack of winning 2 trophies in one season.
