Welcome to the Nottingham Lions thread.
Whilst this site is dedicated to the Nottingham Panthers, we at the Cage would like to see the Nottingham Lions have a higher profile in the local hockey scene. A strong Lions team is a fundamental stepping stone in developing local players.
To help with this, we have created this thread for the Lions which will remain as a sticky at the top of the "talk Hockey" board. On it will be the Lions fixtures, results, rosters, travel and general info etc. All the information is available elsewhere but if it's "right here right now" then perhaps more people will look at it.
We at the Cage don't see the Lions as competition to the Panthers, more complementary and to that end we wish to promote improved and closer links between the Lions and the Panthers.
Thanks to Dave (Shaggy) for the information that follows.

Travelling with the Nottingham LIONS:
The Lions will be able to offer a limited numbers of places on the team coach to away games - strictly on a first-come, first-served basis ( 3 people put their names down for the Sept 4th away game!).
There are going to be some spare seats on the team coach for the Nottingham Lions on their away trips next season. This will be every away game except those at Ice Sheffield (because we don't use a coach for that, everyone goes by car). Rather than let these seats go to waste, they will be on offer to fans to come along on the trip, cheer on the lads and maybe experience a rink that they've never seen before.
There will be a limited number of places available for each trip - this will change each time depending on how many players' guests and family come along, but should be anywhere between 5 and 20. Anyone coming along will be asked to contribute £7.50 towards the cost of the coach - this will not include the price of the game ticket, but I don't think any of them will be above £5, and we often get freebies.
If anyone is interested, please PM Shaggy to put your name down - this is strictly a 'first come, first served' deal - and please include a telephone number. Shaggy will usually find out the number of seats available on the Friday before the game (all Sunday games this year) and will then ring and/or PM people to let them know if they have a seat or not. The coach leaves from the Silverdale Coaches depot on Little Tennis Street South, and secure parking is available.

your always going to get problems with the location. Unlike ice sheffield theres no parking provided, the parking is inconvenient and expensive. The smaller rink would not be such an issue if the PA was clearer and the seating wasnt usually full of Coventry fans! If lions could get on the main arena more people would go as mentioned because its a more professional atmosphere and its more comfortable. But in terms of attracting new fans, the lions really need to advertise a little. maybe give out leaflets with all the games on them in the rink and to people who go to the games. Personally I love going to watch the lions and hope to get a spot on the roster one day but ringing up to find out fixtures when the arena staff often dont know is annoying!

Just like to say good luck to the Lions for their upcoming season. The Friends of the Lions do an amazing job and they and the team deserve every success.
Unfortunately I won't be able to see any games due to being in France, but having a look at the league, and hearing various rumblings from the Scimitar country, presuming the Lions squad is of similar strength to last season they have a decent chance of topping the Northern ENL heap [insert Northern industry joke here]. CapsWebmaster - my studies mean you'll be winding Bobby Haig up on your own, but it doesn't mean it'll be any less funny.
As there are some Lions games that don't clash with Panthers games you've no excuse for missing them, the home games at least.
Good luck guys, hopefully I'll see you all in the playoffs if you draw Invicta!

A couple of Lions pics here to whet your appetite. I hope to make a game or two this season, I rarely make it but enjoy it when I do ... it's what the sport is all about!

I spy with my little eye, two players who interest me. Specifically Lee Mercer, who I thought had retired, but was definitely a character in the EPL days, and Blackburn's Bobby Haig (see above).
***EDIT: Just found out Mercer is at Haringey this season.

Something for Lions fans and jersey collectors......
The Lions are due to get new home and away jerseys this season. How many people would be interested in getting a Lions jersey - same style, same make as the players themselves will wear? Cost would probably be £30-£35 (bit of a guesstimate - I very much doubt it would be more). We did this a few years ago for the black jerseys that they currently wear, and about 30 people (myself included) are the proud owners of such.
We're not taking orders yet or anything like that (I've not even seen the new design, although I know roughly what they will look like) - but if anyone would be interested, please PM me so I can get a rough idea of the level of interest. (We should be able to arrange for names & numbers as well, if people want such).

These lads don't play for money and they certainly don't play for glory - they play for pride.

And besides, the Lions games are generally much more enjoyable (price relative) than Panthers games. Shame about Cannon, Tonks and Wilcox moving to Solihull. I didn't see much of Wilcox but the other two are promising talents, and you can't blame any of them for wanting to prove themselves at a higher level, especially when playing for a player/coach as highly respected as Jesse Hammill (the only person I've ever seen be given 2+2+2+2 on a delayed call). Former Lions Alan Levers and Jon Bell will also be playing for Solihull this season. Colegate will be a big loss for the Lions IMO. However Stefan Dodwell had almost as many points, and guys like Tom Griffiths and Adam Robinson really raised their games towards the end of the season. I think they'll miss Balchin too - IIRC he scored the 100th goal of the Lions' regular season and contributed some useful numbers from the 2nd/3rd line. Just one thing about the press release - Sheffield Scimitars have moved up to EPL but the Spartans have taken their place in ENL North. Not all of last season's Scims have moved up so they will still be tough to beat. Good luck for your season guys - hopefully see you in the playoff final!

Rumour from Streatham is that Simon Greaves has left the Redskins as he has moved back to Nottingham, possibly to return to studying.
Any chance he'll be a Lion this season?

Yeh Colegate will be a big loss but we got guys who still have a lot to prove and im sure we will be there or thereabouts come the end of the season. Nicky will be a big loss too, he may only be 2nd line but hes a big part of the team and made some great plays and is a nice guy aswell. Good luck to your guys aswell!

If any Cage-ites fancy an away trip up to Newcastle on Sunday (get the season off to a flying start) the Nottingham Lions have their first away game up at the Metro Radio Arena vs the Newcastle Chiefs - and there are seats available on the team coach.
The coach will leave from the Silverdale bus depot on Sunday at 12:30pm (best be there at least 15mins beforehand). The cost of the coach will be £7.50 per person - this does not include the match ticket, but in the ENL these are rarely more than a fiver. Face-off is at 6pm, so the likely time of return to Nottingham is going to be a late one - probably around 2am (ouch!). If anyone is interested, please PM me and I will get things sorted.
