Can't see Richardson leaving Cardiff, at least not to come back here. Wasn't it him who wanted to be closer to home when he left the first time? No it was Corey who peed Richie off that’s why he left Panthers.

Damn, so going from that article if he was on a two year deal surely Giants had to agree to him going there? Or get some compensation for letting him go? Great signing for devils. Not surprised they could pull something like this off though, wish Panthers had the cojones to do something like this What worries me is not that Panthers don’t want to pull something like this off but that they simply can’t. Do we have the same clout that at least Devils do now? I’m not convinced, on a day we’ve signed one of last seasons MK players the Devils have snatched one of the top Giants players from the last decade. We’re starting to feel very much like a second tier force in the EIHL.

That’s what a couple of our Brits told me,it was the way Corey treated him when he was trying to convert him from a forward to a Dman. Way back then Richie was a young pretty quiet, shy unassuming character.

Devils once again retain all thier best imports. This is the difference, we just dont and are constantly rebuilding.
But anyone who says they're not splashing the cash big time is delusional.

This is the difference, we just dont and are constantly rebuilding. You need something worth retaining first. But yes they do hang onto the best bits, which is almost certainly because of... But anyone who says they're not splashing the cash big time is delusional. Well, that and winning. Provided they've got the cash to splash, and the buckets are kept in storage, then fair enough. There's no wage cap. We know we've got the cash too, it's just the only splash we make is when someone falls in at the yacht club.

Until a player is announced , I don't think anyone really knows where they are going. Saying That, I really hope Ritchie is staying in Cardiff. Hmm...

Ritchie is 100000000% staying, that’s a defo, and I know. Bit of a hint for you... if you want to be taken even a little bit seriously around here, remember the following:- - anything over 100% doesn't exist - "a defo" isn't a fact unless supported by evidence - "I know" - no you don't. You believe. The greatest probability is that Mark Richardson will re-sign for the Cardiff Devils. You know that, we know that. But a probability is all it is. There are all sorts of other probabilities as well. You need to learn to accept that life isn't just black & white, but all shades in between...

The Devils are not "splashing the cash". Riley took an almost identical contract to Belfast. The difference is in Cardiff the travel is far easier than Belfast. Every away game for the Giants is a hassle. He also knows that the Devils treat their players fantastically and if they put in the graft, they will have a career after they retire in one of the owners businesses. The same goes for Bowns. He only had two offers. Danish and DEL2. Sideway steps at best with worse money and the likliehood of sharing starting duties. The Devils did not have to break the bank to keep him. TK runs it as a business. He does not have a bottomless pit of money. The books have to balance. The big difference with the Devils and Arena teams is that the owners are not looking to make money. All the money goes back into the team. If the Panthers management did this, they could blow everybody out of the water. That said, what the Devils do, and is obviously a big pull factor, is they keep injured or under-performing players on the books. That is huge to know for a player. That stability is massive for a player. They are not earning vast sums of money and need that stability. It all stems from good management. Belfast had it with TK and now the Devils have it. Players want for nothing in Cardiff. They have loads of car sponsorships. They have property and great deals on any rentals. Little things like free cinema, free gym, loads of comp restaurants, barbers, dentists etc etc. It all adds up. When it is packaged up, plenty of players are sold and will take "discounts". The fact they can add CHL and a genuine chance of winning Elite Titles is another factor. They have free entry to Cardiff City, Cardiff Blues, Wales Rugby, Glamorgan Wanderers. They usually get free entry to the big events at the Principality and CC Stadium. It is all part of the package. For guys with families, the club has very cleverly got property in catchment areas of some of the best schools in Wales. Again, it may not seem much, but is huge for a player with children. Devils put together a complete package when courting players. Most clubs just phone and offer a salary. The cherry on top, as mentioned before, is the ownership group. If a player is close to signing or needs a final push, they step up and call. Lots of clubs are envious, but they have the means to offer guys careers after hockey retirement. They are open about it. Work hard for the Devils and they will get plenty of opportunities when playing is over. That cannot be underestimated, especially for older guys or guys with little-to-no prospect of a post hockey career. It is why you see so many older guys in Cardiff playing some of their best hockey. They know the potential rewards for doing so.

All of the extras are sponsorship. This is not being paid for by the Devils. The sports event tickets, free restaurants, cinema, gym, etc etc. It is called networking. Devils do not pay one single penny for these extras. Players simply have to put some stuff on social media or make a public appearance once in a while.
Part of the Devils office have colleagues at CCFC and WRU. No cash being handed over.
The cars again are sponsorship. Each year they seem to squeak a couple of extra vehicles from the lease company. It helps that they are big fans.
The house/flat rentals; whilst this is a cost, Devils simply do not rent the closest flats to the arena. The families are found places in the best school catchment areas. The single guys, the best location for socialising.
They are simply spending all the cash that comes into the club. "Splashing the Cash" would be the owners using their own money to bring in extra players or players on crazy money. It simply does not happen despite what many think. They get free icetime which puts them on equal or better footing than arena teams. They run the rink which means another revenue stream for the club from public skating, boxing events, netball events etc. Panthers get none of the revenue from events at the arena.
A lot of jealousy it would seem.

Maybe you’d be better on the Inferno where you lap up all this 4th biggest wage budget jumbo jumbo. I bet sponsorship paid for these flights yesterday to get the players to Calgary? I’d be more jealous if I wasn’t acutely aware that when your owners get bored, the club will struggle to get these “sponsorships”

It was actually 3rd largest budget (based on last season). Remember; you can pay guys less with the extras that Devils have to offer. Not even taking into consideration the location.
As for flying guys to Calgary; of the players that are there, most are in Canada for the off season to see family/friends. Internal flights to get to the stampede are less than 100 bucks. If I got an invite to spend a weekend with a multi-millionaire, I would have no issue paying 100 bucks for a flight. I know I would have a sick weekend, most likely at the expense of the millionaire.

When you say 3rd highest budget you must be referring to player wages only? (Which is still doubtful) To me, a budget includes everything that you can offer to a player, so all these extras you’ve listed should be included. And there will be costs involved with these, even if they’re not direct. If it’s true that the owners put the money made back into the club and don’t take it away, then that is a huge indicator at the size of you’re budget.

The simple fact is Cardiff appear to manage the club so much better than Panthers. They are in tune with what players need / value, so are able to offer attractive packages to new players and retain the ones they’ve got.
It’s not really about “splashing the cash” they run their club better than Panthers, full stop. So am I jealous - hell yes, and I don’t mind admitting it.

Why would freebies be included in the budget? They are genuinely free. A simple call to the contact at the WRU, CCFC or Principality. The free restaurants are often managed or owned by Devils fans. The advertising/promotion they get from having local sportsmen in generates more business. The local cinema has a manager that plays mens league hockey. He gets the guys freebies aslong as they tweet about it.
They have other outgoings other than the Devils. Energy costs of the rink. Staffing costs of the rink. General upkeep of the building.
The extra money, whilst not on salary goes to other extras not mentioned. Every morning the locker room is stocked with fresh coffee, fruit, pastries, juice. The fridge is stocked with powerades/gels/soft drinks/waters. There are protein shakes They have pre and post game catering. It is not simply a service station sandwich and a Post game dominoes.
The guys can get whatever equipment they want. (It helps that Joey Martin is a Bauer rep). The owners also have pro-stock contacts through Calgary Flames.
