It sounds like our coach thinks this league is purely a "physical first" type of league to me. But the refs stamped on that last season and I reckon it’ll be even worse this year... we might be spending a lot of time on the penalty kill.

That will only happen if we make dumb plays. If these players play smart there's nothing to worry about

All this about you can't play physical because the refs throw you in the box is just a kop out for me. As long as you throw clean checks you'll be fine. We may have signed big, strong players but none of them are goons or have racked up big penalty minutes in their careers so we'll be fine

However, previous experience would indicate that "As long as you throw clean checks you'll be fine" all too often isn't the case. The most memorable example being that freight-train hit by Gui Lepine in the 2012 PO Final vs Cardiff... even The Muppet Twins, Simms & Thompson, said it was a good clean hit... but the ref binned him nonetheless.

Thats one example though not necessarily a trend. Of course refs are occasionally going to make the wrong call. Janssen was the biggest hitter I've ever seen and he didn't spend a lot of time in the box through his hits

He got binned about every other time he threw a hit and I can’t ever remember him throwing a nasty one. Are we mobile enough with all these big bodies, that’s more my concern.

In his original interview Rich stated he likes to have size and speed in his team so hopefully he's done his homework. No concerns about Lepine we know what he's about. I doubt Olsen would have played 100+ NHL is he couldn't skate well and same with Biggs being a first round draft pick. Hopefully nothing to worry about

I really liked the guy, and even his misses scared the wotzits out of the opposition players! ). Actually, I largely agree with you... and lots of good clean HARD hits is just what I want to see... I'm just a tad cynical about the level of officiating. But I'd love to be wrong...

On the one hand, I can absolutely get peoples concerns about the perceived lack of scoring within the team.
However, the coach is clearly going for an indentity with this team and quite frankly, he’s coached at higher levels than this and had success so maybe we should cut him some slack?
He’s signed big, young forwards. But these aren’t players who have scored 5 goals each last season. Perhaps he believes our system will get the best out of the players we have.
There will obviously be a lot on Pither, Perlini and Rheault to score but I think we’ll also see the Farmer of old banging them in. His role won’t be to fight and he can go back to playing the goal scoring role I think he fits best into

Well a high number of wings fans are gutted Biggs left.
A few fans have said to me he has quick hands and is a handful... Jordan Fox?

The coach really seems ro rate this player - I suspect, like others was expecting a high scoring forward - but the coach seems not to be going down the ‘franchise player’ route.

Hopefully nothing to worry about Zack Phillips and Logan Macmillan were both also first round draft picks. I've seen a few posts from leafs fans saying Biggs was the worst first round pick in history. Not criticising the guy at all but I'm starting to fear that we have too much of the same thing in this team. Hope I'm wrong .

Biggs was an awful waste of a first rounder but it wasn’t his fault that he was taken in that round, that was solely down to Brian Burke & his scouting staff; Burke selected a guy called Jamie Devine with a third rounder that had everyone else at the draft shaking their heads in disbelief.
At junior level, Biggs was good but at pro level, he had hands of stone despite being a good skater with a physical presence. His ECHL numbers are more than acceptable for him to come over and do a job for Panthers given his play with Kalamazoo.

Two players at Kalamazoo last year, one scored 18 + 21 and the other 31 + 26. One was their top scorer and the other was 9th. Guess which one Panthers got and which one went to Steelers.
Yep we got Tyler Biggs and they got Josh Pitt. 🙄

I hope to be proved wrong, but I cannot be swept up with the blind optimism I am seeing on facebook and twitter. I have gone from being excited to be being apprehensive as there is not enough goals in this team to compete for the title. If Cardiff continue to recruit as they have I think they will be quite ahead of us come the start of the proper season.

But it feels like we have lots of good guys who would fit our third line, but the expectation was that we would sign two studs for those last two forward positions and we haven't. I was expecting a player in the quality of Hedden, who Cardiff have just signed. I also know we can release players, but wasn't the pool of available players bone dry last year? I can only hope that we are intending to carry a couple of spares and we will still get those last two studs we need up front.

I remember one in particular on Johan Molin from behind into the boards and when Brett Clouthier came looking for him he didn't want to know.

And I think you can largely blame Panthers/Calum for the negativity. They lord it and big it up giving clues about announcing a 1st round draft pick who won world champs golds etc...then roll out a rather mediocre CV player. It’s little wonder the fans get all excited and then rather disappointed ! 🙄

Here’s a suggestion. We could actually wait until he gets here and see how he plays before making a judgement.
