He's from Nottingham, played for Nottingham teams, and Panther's bus gave him lifts when he refereed Sheffield games. I really fail to see the relevance of the whole Simon Kirkham thing? What’s your point Doug? An absolutely awful decision has been made by DOPS, no matter who sits on the panel. Any fair minded fan should be able to see that, regardless of what colour tinted specs they wear. DOPS has made the league an utter laughing stock, not just in this country but across the pond too. So whoever made his decision must be held accountable, regardless of where they’re from, who they support etc. That’s irrelevant. The relevance is that posters on this forum are talking about men in suits with no experience. I would have thought that Kirkham had more than enough. You've been watching hockey a long time Ted. Do you honestly think that this game deserved all this comment? Honestly, we saw worse things every week not that many years ago. Goulakos should have got 2+10 for the check (his third by the way and not punished), and Fretter should have been chucked out with a match ban. Goulakos incidentally, was laughing and joking with his team mates up to the point when he discovered that he had also been ejected.

He's from Nottingham, played for Nottingham teams, and Panther's bus gave him lifts when he refereed Sheffield games. Lol. The same bus story fired at Carson the other way around. 😂 Correct sir! And it was believed that Kirkham cheated for Panthers and Carson did the same for Steelers. Both claims were rubbish then and rubbish now.

Lol. The same bus story fired at Carson the other way around. 😂 Yeah but our traffic cone looking chums from from the land that intellect passed by cry and whinge if you point that out. Don't, whatever you do, point out that Pering (a current ref rather than a historic one) lives in Sheffield and works for a long-term sponsor of the Sheffield Steelers. Or to put it another way, Pering's employer benefits from a successful Sheffield Steelers. No conflict of interest at all, oh no. Educating Yorkshire? You'd have more luck educating pork. I thought the abuse was a long time coming. Well done.

The real problem as with just about every incident like this is that we are not using a 4 official system. If the other Mickey Mouse teams in the league can't affort the right amount of officials then sling them out to play in thier own penny halfpenny league asap.

DS the BS has accused the Panthers of being one of the teams that argued against the implementation of the 4-man system. He provided absolutely no proof to back up his claims mind you, likely safe in the knowledge that the Panthers won't sink to his level to refute said comments.

Doesn't mean I should tolerate abuse any better. To be brutally honest I don't care what you think. I don't go crying about 'abuse' from Steeltalk users when I'm on there. It's words on the internet, I'm not on the two-way range in Afghan being shot at by the Taliban anymore. I can deal with it, perhaps you should learn to.

I shouldn't even need to be put to a vote. It should be a requirement. As for DS I agree but every team has a form of DS the BS in one shape or another. The difference between him and ours is that he bleeds steelers and always has. I wish ours was the same for the Panthers.

I wish ours was the same for the Panthers. To be honest (and I can't believe I'm going to say this) but that is a little unfair to Gary Moran. Whilst GM the GM may not spend hours on Twitter every day or wander about the arena trying to sling 50/50 tickets he is no less passionate about the Panthers than DS the BS is about Steelers. They are two very different people though and approach it differently. (I really can't believe I'm doing this but...) GM the GM likely keeps a firm grip on the Panthers 'rudder' because that's how he expresses his passion for the Panthers, by attempting to control as many elements of the organisation as he can. DS the BS on the otherhand likes to vocalise his passion, probably in a constant attempt to gain approval from other Steelers fans.

It’s attracted so much comment because DOPS have made an almighty balls up of the whole thing. Comments all over social media and no doubt on other clubs fan forums too, not just this one. Unfortunately as much as you or I love a bit of old school stuff, the game has changed. Players know the boundaries and if they overstep they should be punished. Bearing n mind some of the bans handed out the past few seasons, Fretter got off ridiculously lightly. Yes Goulakos was far from angelic in his actions but players like that are nothing new. As I said in an earlier post, your #90 skated past him and did absolutely nothing. If Fretter has gone up to Goulakos and turned him round and fought him, he’d have got maybe 2+10+5? A game penalty tops? His actions have no place whatsoever in this sport and a much bigger punishment should be heading his way. Lastly, if this is the best Kirkham and his buddies can manage them they’re clearly not fit for purpose.

(Although we've been asked to keep this on topic I feel your accusation calls for a response.) Words on the internet that you wouldn't use to my face? Trust me when I say this (and those who know me would confirm this), I'd have absolutely no problem using the same language I use on the internet to you, in person. I am forthright in my opinions, do not mince my words and am happy to call a spade a spade. (Please excuse this last off-thread comment by myself Mods, it will be my last and I call upon 'Doug' to use direct messages if he wishes to continue this exchange)

Some Points from my opinion...
4 man system wouldn't off stopped this. In our CHL games you have seen different implementation of rules by the 2 refs on the ice at the same time (one ref Turning players away for having shirts tucked but the other just stood there watching - Perring i think) The Referee's haven't improved yet the game in this country has. In another thread, there is talk of how much better the overall skill level of teams are compared to 3 years ago let alone When the EIHL first started. The only way some of the reffing standards has improved is that some of the old guard have retired.
Along those lines, we have seen incidents called well after the play, almost waiting for a response. I have seen the play go on for several seconds with the puck in possession of the "offending" team and the referee decides that its now a penalty.
I agree that no reaction from the Steelers Players or the bench at the time speaks volumes. We, as Panthers fans, lambasted our team last season for not "dealing with it at the time" when incidents happen. Was Fitzgerald not on the ice? is he the only one prepared to step up? One thing that I do know is that on every line for panthers, someone would take exception to it. (Some may just be words though... *cough* Clarke are you gloves on a sting like a 3 year olds? *cough*)
If either ban is increased, at what point do either club decide to cut their losses and move on? We did with Jim Shepherd after his Spear on Mark Dutiamume. If either gets bumped above 5 games, i can see them going.
Is any actions going to happen re the alleged replying of the incident before the penalties were announced? In general, replays in nigh real time should be banned.

...Was Fitzgerald not on the ice?... He had already been thrown from the game for a high stick offence. It certainly appears so. The rest of the Steelers bench appear to have the testicular fortitude of a 3 year old French boy.

Usually it's 2 minutes or 2+2 and occasionally 5 minute major but only when blood is involved. Has anyone else or can anyone enlighten me?

From the IIHF rulebook: RULE 143 – HIGH-STICKING DEFINITION: A player who carries his stick or any part of it above the height of his shoulders and who strikes an opponent with any part of it. i. A player who makes contact with an opponent with a high stick will be assessed at least a minor penalty.ii. A player who injures an opponent accidentally by a high-sticking foul will be assessed a double-minor penalty. iii. A player who injures an opponent by a careless high-sticking foul will be assessed either a major penalty and automatic game-misconduct penalty or a match penalty.iv. A player who makes contact with any part of an opponent’s upper body while winding up to shoot or while following through on a shot or pass is subject to all penalties for high-sticking.

The end of DOPS as we know it?
Lyle Seitz along with the PSC have agreed to look at incidents going forward to assist the EIHL in the interim until the EIHL meet on November 8th for an emergency board meeting to discuss DOPS and Refereeing.
The EIHL have removed Simon Kirkham as Head of the Department of Player Safety with immediate effect.
