Should get Sewell suspended as well. Clearly out of his depth on Saturday.

IIHF rules are clear. A slash that causes an injury should be a 5+G or a Match. The question is, then, was it a slash? See what they say. If it's deemed a 5+G we just have a bad call and no-one suspended, so what's the point? If a Match, Hotham will serve his one game against Belfast in the Cup tomorrow.

What about deliberate attempt to injure? A two handed slash when Dimmen does not even have the puck.

TBH on the highlights it doesn't look all that, it's not like the old Wilson lumberjack effort.
I dunno, see what they say but I doubt he'll miss anything more than the CC game at most.

Can't see what good a review does us here,it was just a regular slash really, one game ban at most. Hothams next two games are the Cup semi 2nd leg with Belfast followed by Coventry in the league and neither do us any favour if he misses a game.
Unless we fancy helping Belfast into the cup final because we would rather play them than Cardiff IF we get through.

Seems a bit harsh to me, given the other DOPS bans, but there you go.

That's a very harsh ban, especially compared to some of the others handed out earlier.
But it's about time Cardiff had some problems to deal with, they've been lucky with injuries until very recently.

Hotham 2 games, for Dimmen and lets be positive and say 4 weeks that 9 games, if it wasn't for bad luck Panthers would have no luck as they say.

Maybe a player shown to have intentionally caused an injury should not be permitted to play until the injured player is back to fitness ? Discuss .....

I would like to se a fine, Panthers will get appeals money returned, so Hotham should pay the cost of DOPS And why would Kelman put out the statement before DOPS? what's he trying to do undermine DOPS and the league of which he is a part off and to me would be more serious then the incident itself because of the wider implications

Kelman should get fined for a mardi outburst yes.
Hotham should have got nothing other than 2 minutes in the sin bin. It was a slash yes,but it was no worse a slash than you see 500 times a season, but this one just happened to cause injury.
Earlier in the season there was a very similar incident with a slash on Valdix of Sheffield which broke his hand/finger. Might be wrong, but i don't remember seeing anybody get a two game ban for that one !

The new crop of referees miss so much that goes off, while they are turning round to make sure there isn't any-one behind them when they skate. Or by the over elaborate signals to the benches prior to a face off. How often do you see a linesman having to tell the ref what happened.

had the correct call been made at the time then Hotham wouldn't have been on the ice and getting an assist on the GWG

This is a tough one. I remember talking some time ago about what should be punished and how. Should it be the action that is punished or should players be punished based on the resulting injury? I think you have to take both in to account.
I agree with Iginla on this in principal. This is a slash you see usually multiple times a game. I don't think there is any intent to injure(maybe there was, only 1 man knows that), just an attempt to make Dimmen lose control of the puck. 2 inches lower and it's a broken stick(and ironically probably a 2 min minor) instead of broken fingers. I would imagine it was a misplaced slash at worst. However Hotham was in control of his stick and made an illegal play resulting in an injury to an opponent. Therefor I believe the 2 games in spot on.

It was a slash yes,but it was no worse a slash than you see 500 times a season, but this one just happened to cause injury. That's exactly the point though. The rules clearly state that a slash that causes an injury is a 5+G or a Match. Whether there's any "intent" or not. There's no option for a slash that causes an injury to cause a minor to be called. What troubles me the most in all this is that yet again, we've gone from "no penalty at all called at the time" to "Match" with an extra game's suspension thrown in. That's a heck of a leap in tariff and the league have got to be doing something about that. That doesn't look good for the ref, frankly. He's missed something completely that's deemed worthy of a 2 game suspension. Where were the linesmen in all this? They're allowed to talk to the ref to help him call a major penalty worthy offence that he's missed? How did the ref think Dimmen broke his finger(s)? FWIW, DOPS/the league should be carpeting Kelman for releasing the news before they did. (Interestingly, there doesn't seem to be any mention of it on the Devils website now?)

In fairness to the ref I don't think he would see it as he's behind Dimmen,it should have been the linesman who had a better view if he was on the blueline.
I can just about see a game or match pen maybe,so a one game ban absolute max....but where does the extra game come from,it wasn't a wild swing and it doesn't look nasty, reckless or done with any real intent to cause injury. I know Hotham can be a bit hot headed at times, but two games is very very harsh.
The game has gone soft !

Kelman gets on my nerves more and more each season, just suck up the punishment for a dangerous play by a notoriously dirty player.
Fair call for me. Sewell should also be disciplined in some way, send him up to Dundee next time they play a Wednesday night game. For a guy who prides himself on officiating in the USHL in America, you'd expect that quality to be shown here, he showed nothing but that he wasn't fit for the job. The sooner Darnell is back from Malta the better, we might not always like him but he's 10x better than that garbage we saw on Saturday and tends to control games a bit better.
