So, two places in next seasons revised format. First and second in the league will qualify. Play off winners will get a place in the Continental Cup, and if they are one of the top two sides in the league, then third in the league will get it. CHL LinkPanthers, Braehead, Belfast, Sheffield and Cardiff have all confirmed they will take a place if they qualify.

Going to be interesting to see the opinions of the fans of those other 4 clubs who ridiculed Panthers this season. Panthers can't have done that badly if our league has been offered another place. It will certainly have a knock-on effect on recruitment. I also can't help but wonder whether although all 5 clubs have confirmed they will take a place if they qualify, whether when it comes to it for the arena teams they won't have the ice time to do so...

Cant see anyone signing CHL players like we did tho. only 2 home games to try and make money on will hit the pocket a bit. that's potentially £30k-£40 gate money not coming in unless you finish in the top 2 then get another game in the knockout stage.

Yes, Panthers ridiculed having taken a place when we hadn,t won the league yet someone who may not have won this seasons league on an even schedule probably will get a place without comment.
Regards getting a place from Play-offs.I understand as the Cup is more worthy a tournament. So this issue of format for Play Offs needs addressing.

Will be interesting to see if Clan and Steelers can afford the likes of Cohen/Robinson on top of their regular roster and make 4 lines?
What will their quality be like now they'll be recruiting in June?

Feeling rather proud at this news.
A lot of people put in a lot of work to enable Panthers to take their place in the competition. I had a feeling that the offer of a place to a UK team was a bit of an afterthought but we showed we could meet the tournament's rather strict requirements for game presentation, and won a game to boot. We even had Martin Baumann, the CHL CEO, here for the Lulea game having a look at what we were doing, and he must have liked what he saw.
Clearly, as things are now, there is no chance of a team from the UK winning the thing. But when a chance presents itself to compete at a higher level you have to take it. You have to test yourself. It seems we made an impression as we now have two spots next year.
Maybe now the UK is higher up in the consciousness of the powers that be, we might get to host a World Championship round in Nottingham or elsewhere in the UK. That would be fantastic.

Rather than worrying about whether we could afford it Pidge, I wonder whether your budget will take a hit if Mr Black is having to fund a CHL campaign up in Glasgow?
Also playing in the CHL may be the difference between resigning a player like Mathieu Roy and not re-signing him.
Either way nobody has qualified for anything yet........

So why wouldn't the winners go into the Continental Cup?
The issue is not the European competition but the format of the playoffs imo.

I think the playoffs should always be the more prestigious tournament but the format as you say is all wrong. I think the real issue here is that the league stated at the end of last season that the challenge cup winners would qualify for the continental cup, now it's changed to the playoff winners. This rule could have been dictated by the IIHF though.

Great news for UK hockey.
Don't understand the change from Challenge Cup winners into the Continental Cup to the Play-Off winners though? Like others have said, win the PlayOffs = you play 4 games, win the Challenge Cup minimum of 5 games (and that's only if you "double up" all of your group games).

The first round anyway is a farce to eliminate one team (I know it's business finances from games).... Really starts at quarter final stage.

I was 1 of the few thousand that purchased just over 3800 average and I understand they gave away a lot of tickets, and the the fiasco at the start( Lee, Podleska etc) then chasing to other side of Europe for 2 Pre CHL warm up games and then the hangover from CHL in the league and I know the pro CHL like GM will say well we got the Likes of Modig, Cohen and Robinson, but i Still think it will in the end cost Panthers this year to what extent I'm not sure.
CHL not for me, the overall impact is to high

When push comes to shove we will see if the likes of Belfast and Sheffield step upto the plate. I would wager they will come up with some lamentable excuses for not taking part in the tournament next year.
If they do take part , the biggest humble pie ever made will be required by some their supporters

Sheffield have already tweeted saying they are in. Anyway Cardiff would be asked ahead of us. Just thinking how will all these panthers fans who love their euro jollies take this news. They'll be distraught

Good luck steelers and clan building sub standard rosters in the middle of summer just so you can have the visas ready for the players to arrive early August !

Well if Sheffield do decline, whoever was going into the continental cup should take their place.
If they do go in the CHL,it will be very interesting to see what roster they put together. I bet it would put ours to shame and there won't be bit of this and a bit of that, with players signed for only four CHL games, some of who come in injured etc etc !!!!!!!!!!!
