Regardless of whether the players get paid or not (I know too easy that one as ref: Sheffield, been there done that) to me this season has highlighted the differences between an owner who is in it for the cash and the ones who are there for the love of the game and that team in particular.
Nottingham have obviously spent some significant cash as compared to most other clubs but look at the ones who are topping the charts ie Sheffield and Cardiff and this is the where spending that extra little bit to bring in those special players that a fan owner of the club will do as compared to an owner who is about cash flow who will bring in players when they see the results drop and are worried about the fan base dropping affecting the bottom line which imho is what happens at the panthers..
The frustrating thing is with the buying power of what must be at Nottingham there is no reason that the likes of Roy hotham etc could not have been brought in last season nor is there any reason they could not be brought in for next other than the panthers wont splash that cash..

Perhaps IIHF should denote that entrants (League 1 and 2) if NOT taking their place, may not be allowed to be replaced by another, then we'd understand the implications of what we'd really be selling to those abroad. We can't sell ourselves if we can't afford to play. It's a mess changing all about each season. Deciding on who, which tournament or why we are actually sending teams. This end of season we see 2nd place Clan representing us as a team who may have finished a lot lower in a standard schedule otherwise. Perhaps first league place and the Play-Off winners as TWO WINNERS would have been better.Leaving the (as last term) CUP winners going to the Continental. But then again we like change don't we? ?

Going to hamburg was ace, I wish we had qualified again I'm one of the grumps who wishes the Steelers weren't taking part in the CHL, but as it looks like it will be happening I'll just have to go with the flow and support them. I just hope it doesn't put us on the back foot with regards the competition that does matter to me....The EIHL. Regards Doom I suspect that this year it might be possible to make a modest profit from the CHL or at least break even. Handled correctly I doubt it will have a negative impact on your league games next season.

It'll be a 4 game group stage for Sheffield & Braehead next year won't it? Presumably each side will host the other 2 for a couple of days and play their home games.
I thought it was great, it's easily the highlight of the season (not saying much I admit). I hope both of them get a draw like we did, with a nice away trip or two, and thoroughly enjoy the experience.

Recent testimonial dinner for Thomas had previous players comment in public that they were not paid on time nor paid for equipment needs. Not a big secret that Smith has issues with the players. Did they now.....
Do you have a link to these comments??

I hope your 14 other posts were far better than this effort. Unfortunately not. thecageforum.proboards.com/user/2977/recentSeems to have had a bit of an identity crisis too. Went from describing Panthers as "we" to "you". A campanologist would understand which end he radiates from. Ah the classic imposter poster eh? Always one sad case up to this kind of thing.

Ok you got me,I'll come clean. I was a panthers fan but I have become a Turncoat and wanted to follow a team with some character so I now support the blaze. Over and out folks, see you in the play offs.

I can't wait to see what the CHL makes of Fitzgerald and Frank.
Either that,or the Clan fans better get used to watching a team with no toughness next season !

Forney given your comment you are not a big fan or you would have been at the dinner but to clarify my brother who lives in Sheffield was and the room started to buzz when the statements were made. If you are interested seek out anyone who was there and ask the question of them. Playing in the CHL for us this year was not a mistake what was a mistake is signing players to big bucks for only short term CHL play and being unable to replace those who left with any quality. Even Notts has to adhear to a budget albeit at the top end of the league. I think Black supports CHL play and will ensure the Clan has the budget to match the type of player needed.

You don't half talk some absolute rubbish. Because I don't go to a dinner "I'm not a big fan"!! I actually go to watch the hockey and have been doing home and away since 92. Just because I don't want to puck bunny around the players doesn't make me any less of a fan. Proof isn't some rumour told to your brother. How about giving us concrete proof of these financial problems. Or, as more likely, your just out to try and harm Tony Smith and his businesses. Its worth remembering false accusations on forums and social media can land you in a whole heap of bother.

Only repeating what has been said in public by ex players so not sure of any trouble with that but it appears you have little interest in the players who have played for near as long as you have been a fan, Tony must feel the same as he didn't bother to show either from what was stated. If a fan since 92 these rumors should be common place for you given the financial history of your team. Enjoy the playoffs hopefully we get some revenge on you.

If a fan since 92 these rumors should be common place for you given the financial history of your team. Enjoy the playoffs hopefully we get some revenge on you. You've been pushing the same agenda for a few years now. Like I said previously, I had a look at your posting history and there's clearly an unhealthy obsession with Tony Smith and how he runs OUR club. Given the mentality/structure of this league the argument of silverware then only applies to 3 teams. All others are wasting their time and money. Any team in any prof. hockey league that is playing at 600-700 percent winning percentage will receive a little more than a year of full budget to garner so called silverware. Steelers under Smith's ownership will never match the likes of Nottingham or Belfast as he is a hockey fan which is far from being hockey knowledgeable in terms of building a championship team. One of the first things you learn is to air your dirty laundry behind closed doors not in the print or social media. At least Finnerty had the prof. and respect for his players and the teams fans not to slag off the club in his interviews after he was not renewed. A true sign of his character and awareness of what it takes to be a winner. Not so sure Smith can say that with any conviction but time will tell. It will be very impotant that the new coach is in place sooner than later as recruitment never takes a holiday and I think he may have a tough time retaining those quality imports that the Steelers presently have. Smith failed to look at himself in this decision and unlike the Panthers who had a plan going forward with Nielson were not swayed by forum comments. Now the off ice issues which are significant and Smith generated can come out. I doubt they will be able to recruit any quality players once all is aired Never on Steeltalk just not a fan of Smith as he lack what it takes to build a winner, far to involved in the day to day activities of the club. Impossible as player or coach to feel comfortable with big brother always looking over someones shoulder. This atmosphere is not prevalent in Notts and the results appear to be far more positive.
Nobody posts this much about an owner of the opposition without a motive....That's just a further sample.
It seems you were wrong about Smith not having what it takes to build a winner.
Regards
Doom

I hope Sheffield and Braehead put on a decent show in the CHL, and I for one wish them both the best of luck.
The sport over here will benefit the more the EIHL is involved in competitions like this.
I now see the Continental Cup being winnable by an EIHL team going forward (bent officiating aside) - who would've thought that 5 or 6 years ago?

As for being the one potentially landing in trouble, it doesn't matter who said what to who and when, it is you posting them on a public forum, so it would be you who would face the consequences of any action taken. If you cannot "prove" your suggestions then you are on dodgy ground. He said this to him, on this night, is not proof.
Just to think you started life pretending to be a Steelers fan on steeltalk and now you are on here pretending to be a Panthers fan.
As for interest in the players. You are quite right, I'm not interested in becoming their friends, why should I, I don't know them. So, on that basis, I'm not interested in any dinners, end of season do's etc etc. I come to watch the hockey not to try and make myself feel important by saying I'm friends with this player and that player. Does this finally sink in??
As it turns out, my other half used to run a supporters club for the Steelers before I met her. So, she is actually friends with plenty of ex Sheffield players even as much as going to stay with them in Canada whilst on holiday. Does that, by association, make me a better fan??
