People were asking questions and I went and found some answers. There was no ulterior motive, no sour grapes or agenda, a simple favour to try and enlighten folk..... Which most of us took in the way it was intended. Thanks Nem its a shame that it has to be spelt out though, isnt it? people see the sheffield affiliation and go into moron mode without any due course. so, after all this talk, does it mean that ellis has approximately 27 hours left to sign clarkie?

To be honest tho guys, if Ellis is going to sign anyone it will be last minute, ie today so that the player can play as much as possible for their old team and so they cant change their mind. Im not saying we are signing anyone but just if we do sign anyone it will be today anyway if that makes sense

Ive been told times that we ve signed Clarkie, and its come from one of the players. We need that extra forward desperately

If he does come how can you see the lines shaping up, maybe a direct upgrade on Shmyr for the Swede line? Clarke Bergin McAslan looks pretty tasty as well.

Clarke's a Brit so I thought we have another month to sign him, doesnt the end of the window today just apply to international transfers?

I doubt there's anything in the regulations about when they need to announce it. Could be any time. The club could have signed someone weeks ago and they're holding out on the announcement 'till tomorrow to stop anyone trying to rock the boat. Or they could sign someone today and save the announcement for tomorrow's NEP if rumours of their sponsorship deal are true.

Clarke's a Brit so I thought we have another month to sign him, doesnt the end of the window today just apply to international transfers? It seems that's not the case. See the posts by Nemesis earlier in this thread. Though as he says, nothing seems to be written in stone. The IIHF rules look vague on this and in practice the EIHL "rules" appear to be flexible anyway. It's anyone's guess what is/isn't allowed in this case. If Nemesis's source is one of the people at the EIHL who made a hash of last year's decision over if and when Ellis could play for us then they might be wrong and/or change their mind anyway.

Dunno exactly - vague recollection of someone saying the NEP had some kind of agreement regarding who announces signings and when. No idea if it was accurate information or not. I was using the word sponsorship in a loose way meaning presumably if such an agreement exists the club get something out of it, money/guaranteed column inches/whatever.

From today's NEP:
This implies the deadline is for ITC cards not registrations. Either that or Ellis is lining himself up for a big screw-up.

Don't know how I overlooked this section in the IIHF regs:
So, assuming his current ITC in Italy wasn't due to expire yet, DC would require an unlimited ITC to return to the UK, and therefore would have to transfer before tonight.
... but... I think he's still allowed to return to the UK after the actual expiry of his Italian ITC. I'd guess that'll be sometime in March? It's then up to the leagues in the UK if they will allow him to register with a team here.

From today's NEP: This implies the deadline is for ITC cards not registrations. Either that or Ellis is lining himself up for a big screw-up. I think this is different though because there is no 'movement' of a card or registration involved. It is simply being re-activated. Flying Viking also makes a good point, but again I would point to the press release by the IIHF and their noted intention to stop end of season player movements. Interesting couple of hours to go, although as long as he is registered by the deadline you can announce it whenever. God, clarity would be nice eh?....

I know that hockey players just say things to make you happy........BUT last season I was talking to Clarkie in town. He said how he was enjoying being captain etc and he wouldnt want to ever play for another british team..........I made a joke that he would be playing for Sheffield next season and if looks could kill.................!!!!! He just stared at me as if i'd just insulted his entire family and said "I will NEVER play for THEM!" lol
So while, yes, players say things they dont mean but his reaction was such that i'd say he wont be going to Sheffield.

I would agree with your interpretation of the IIHF statement, Nemesis. The only thing in the statement that makes me think "hmmm..." is that EU law makes it illegal to discriminate between citizens of different member nations, when it comes to work. I'm sure the IIHF will have consulted with the EU before being allowed to have such an ITC deadline effectively blocking all EU ice hockey players moving across borders to find work, between Jan 31 and June 30. I guess we'll find out in the next few weeks, if EU players in Italy start returning to their native lands, and registering with local teams... or if not a single one does.
