I get the feeling there may be a big difference in cost between Shmyr and Clouthier so Gazza for the simple role of enforcing wouldn't you rather have a cheaper option and go for a more expensive goal scorer I wouldn't think they come much more expensive in our league than Tessier.

It's just you don't find your scoring streak straight from playing the enforcing role, no matter how good you were in juniors. It's going to take him quite a few weeks to adjust and wrap up a few points I reckon. He wasn't signed to score say 50+ points as a top line forward, any would be a bonus. 20-30 wouldn't be bad for an enforcer! ;D Thats exactly what you should be looking at from an Enforcer, Brad Voth was the top points scoring Enforcer in the league last season and he came away with 28 points for the season which when you consider his penalty minutes were 340 is a very decent return. I'll be honest i would be a lot more comfortable with clouthier in my team than i would with Shmyr who's stats seem to suggest he has struggled in the 2nd and 3rd tier in North America. Clouthier has some genuinely decent Junior Stats and has made a career in the AHL. And when going to the ECHL has roughly a point every other game. Do you include Payette in the Enforcer role? Because he has over 30 points the last 2 seasons. Of course we are only guessing at this point but most on SteelTalk have Clouthier down as a 1st line signing. We have Shmyr down to be on the 2nd or even 3rd line and if that turns out to be true then comparing them like for like becomes difficult in my eyes.

I sense panic on here to be honest.
I'm certain we would have the good praises as seen on the Shymr thread if this guy had signed for the panthers; if not better.

Not really....
as I said.... I wouldnt be overjoyed with him.
He has a tonne of AHL experience and plays an enforcer role over there. That doesnt come cheap. Nothing anyone will say about him playing juniors and scoring will really convince me he is going to have a massive points tally come season end.
Shmyr isnt being touted as some massive points scorer.... just that he is massive and will fight when needed ;D.... Also hes not first line material (as is being suggested with Clouthier) and if he plays first line... while it will be tough.... I thing its a massive risk.
If they can play very well in the AHL (nothing to say this guy can, stats point the opposite way) and enforce (JC) then probably worth the money. To have someone whos mainly a fighter... well you can get them from anywhere and a lot cheaper.

No i didnt include payette as there was always Angelstad and then Cornish who were clearly there to do the enforcing. Payette was always used last year as a player first,Enforcer second

I don't think anyone's panicking, Mitch.... maybe he will take the league by storm - but I doubt it. Maybe he'll be utterly useless... but I doubt that, too. As Ted says - comparing reactions to him with reactions to Shmyr are pointless, because people are talking about this guy being on the Steelers' first line, whilst Shmyr is in no way expected to be that high - 2nd or maybe even 3rd line. Just because we're not 'talking up' this guy as much as Them Up The M1 doesn't mean to say that we're running scared...

seems a very good signing by Shef, definitely one which rivals Shymr and seems hes played at a much higher level maybe even is better, hope not but from what ive read, true. but on the bright side probably cost alot more than Shymr.
Shymr is still well up there and definitely capable of taking the EIHL Heavyweight crown!!! come on Shimmy!!

just listened to the interview with seth.... is it just me, but when he talks about nottingham being his "fight night" he sounds really false almost like he has been told to say that!

Lol I really dont see the fuss about the whole Nottingham 'fight night' comment. Was he really going to say anything else? He's been signed as our main enforcer and he's been asked about our closest rivals. He's hardly going to say "well to be honest I'm not that bothered really."
It's purely a soundbite. No more no less.

Yes who for his size is a VERY decent skater in fact that was probably his best and most consistent attribute. He wasnt a clutcher and grabber as bad as some i saw in the league last year and i think he can adjust. Remember stick work is what will be clamped down on, you can still smash someone through the boards no problem

Looks just as much a liability as Shmyr though doesnt he? only the stats of Clouthier show he has played at a much higher level for a much longer time! Who knows when the season starts shmyr might show the British hockey scene he is ten times the player but from what i have to work on now i would take Clouthier ,Gazza me learned friend, forget abiout Shymr being like Cloth Ear. Mike Ellis in his comments regarding Shymer is that forget about PIMS and Stats, he was brought in because of his 'team ethic' and his strength and duarbility as a good fast skater who will give 110% for the duration of the game. Cloth Ear has been brought in to go dancing everynight, on the premis that he is protecting Tessier and Maltby. There is a difference beween an out and out enforcer/goon as Cloth Ear is, and a guy like Shymer who is not here to be a out and out Enforcer/Goon, but to play a team role put points on the board, and not sit on his backside in the penalty box for more minutes than hes on the ice. Regards HL

HL both Clouthier and Shymr have been brought in for the exact same reasons. No team in this league can afford to lose a roster spot on a player who's only job is to fight.
The comments made by Ellis regarding your boy and Matsos/Simms regarding ours are exactly the same.
It amuses me that eveytime a tough guy is signed on either of our sides opposition fans set off on one trying to convince themselves that their player is better. The reality of the matter is that every player signed to fulfill that role will be technically limited but willing to put himself on the line every night.

I'm sure Clouthier will put up better numbers in the EIHL than he was in Canada: 1) Because the quaility of the EIHL is LOWER than that of the AHL. 2) He was no more than a fringe player during his tenure in the AHL, so all this talk about him " forging a career in the AHL" is complete tosh. He wasn't logging huge amounts of ice time at all. Jeez, the lengths people go to try & prove " our player is better than yours."

I can be abit nieve when it comes to stats ( I am female) but 79 games played with 2 goals for a winger does not seem that good to me. Am I wrong? You just wait and see I think this guy could take the league by storm in more ways that one. You say that about every single player thats ever signed for Steelers!

Payette was always used last year as a player first,Enforcer second I saw Payette's role as provocateur first and player second - he's not really an enforcer. He can play though and give a good account of himself which is why he's done well in the EIHL so far. Be interesting to see how he does this season with ZT being trumpeted and a fair few heavy weights around the league. Not to mention a good few players who delight in heavy duty hitting - he might find himself targeted for the middle of next week!
