Somebody was right!Been rumoured for a while now. This is how Bison announced his signature the other year: TThe Basingstoke Wella Bison are proud to announce the signing of Canadian defenceman Mike Rees for the fast approaching 2005-2006 season. As per club policy no details of this agreement will be released. Wella Bison General Manager/Head Coach Mark Bernard was delighted with this latest acquisition: "Mike is a big strong aggressive defenceman which is exactly what I was looking for. He also has a ton of experience which is going to make us better right away on the backend." "I also love the fact that Mike has been a captain or asst. captain in six of his first seven seasons, this shows me the type of character and leadership that he has. Danny Meyers could not say enough about him and how much he helped the younger players in Bracknell last season." Rees who will be entering his second year of hockey in the UK and eighth as a professional has spent the majority of his career playing for the El Paso Buzzards of the Central Hockey League. He was the captain of the Bracknell Bees last season and was a big part of the team's championship run and was rewarded with being named as a BNL second team all-star. Rees is also excited about the new challenges that lie ahead: "I was very disappointed to hear about the demise of Bracknell as I enjoyed it very much and we had a lot of success as a team last year. I'm thrilled to be joining Basingstoke in the Elite League and look forward to renewing my partnership with Danny Meyers." Bernard concluded with: "Mike is a winner, he showed that last season as did Danny Meyers. You can never have enough of this on a team because once you've won a championship your not happy until you do it again, this is the type of thinking we need in our locker room." Thing is he never went there though! I am not sure why as he would have come straight from Bracknell

stay at home, quiet D man.... Cant say im immediately overwhelmed But given that the other D-men are allegedly more offence-orientated, isn't that the best kind to add? Quite a few opposing fans have been rating our defence as 'dodgy', mainly because they think that Neilson, Krajickek etc wll keep going too far forward. Maybe they will - maybe they've just been coached that way previously... maybe Mike Ellis will make sure they keep back this season - who knows? But either way - having at least one noted stay-at-home D-man is surely a good thing, yes?

I don't doubt he's a stay-at-home d-man, but...

More like a stay-in-the-box d-man if those stats are anything to go by....

More like a stay-in-the-box d-man if those stats are anything to go by.... Eh? You surely don't mean in the penalty box? Not with PIMs totals for the last 3 years of 74, 46 and 65? That's hardly a huge amount....

That's hardly a huge amount.... It is for a stay at home D man.. If you compare him to Ricci who got 10 penalty minutes all season for us when he played here.

For a stay at home man, i'd say so Shag. Also, with season totals of 208, 180, 118, 127 and 149 before that, i'd say he is a bit of a minute guzzler.

with the new rules may become issue if he has trouble adapting, but its same for all the teams at present.

Question - why do people think a stay-at-home D-man should be likely to get fewer PIMs than any other style of D-man? All it means is that he does his work in our zone.... that alone should mean no more or less inclination to take penalties....
Fair point re Ricci.... although that is actually an unusually low number of PIMs, surely?
As for 4+ years ago.... well, that was 4+ years ago! I'd have thought that the last 3 years would be more indicative of his current style.... maybe he was a bit fractious before and has calmed down since then?
Overall - I see nothing in his stats to cause me to worry. Don't really know anything about him, so joins Lindsay etc in the 'wait and see' pile....

point taken shaggy, still a wee bit worried about being on the penalty kill, but lie kyou say we shall see when we hit the ice.

i'm not too worried about the players taking penalties just as long as it doesn't get stupid, from the players we have signed so far, as far as i can tell we will have one of the best special teams around the league

More like a stay-in-the-box d-man if those stats are anything to go by.... Less than a minor a game average over the last three years. He's hardly ripping it up fight wise now is he?

Was a very good player at bees. One of the players that you never went home raving about, but then he never made horrific errors. By my maths thats a fair few ex-bees, and it looks like Ellis is going down Willys route of taking the cream of the old BNL crop. Added to the fact that Ellis is one of the top 4, coaches in gb (in my opinion, with Rob, Strachen and Thomson) you guys could have a good season.

[ Thing is he never went there though! I am not sure why as he would have come straight from Bracknell Rees suffered a bad injury during the summer and would have been out till christmas so him and Bernie decided they would break the contract so Bison wouldnt be shorthanded as Rees didnt want to do that to them either. Hope that clears that up
