Admin, don’t know if it's already set-up but if not, any chance of setting up a thread same as last seasons. This will enable a one stop view on all new re-signs / signings and should stop the constant new threads on who's signed here and there. Cheers

Hand swoop nets fellow Scot Adam Walker
News posted: 09-05-2006
Tony Hand has completed his second signing swoop as fellow Scot Adam Walker has signed a contract with the Manchester Phoenix.
Nineteen-year old Adam Walker, originally from Kirkcaldy where he first turned professional with the Fife Flyers as a 14-year old, has a growing reputation as an exciting, quick-skating forward with an eye for a goal. Icing for the Swindon Wildcats last season in the English Premier League, he tallied an impressive 29 goals and 43 assists for 72 points in 45 appearances, and was voted as the teams’ Best British Player.
He also starred for the Great Britain Under-20 squad at the World Junior Championships in Romania last December, including a tournament top-scorer haul of 11 goals and 7 assists for 18 points as the GB team stormed to the Gold Medal winning all five games in the Division 2 tournament in Bucharest.
Tony Hand noted, “At 6ft 1in, Adam has good size and knows where the goal is – his numbers last season alone proved that and people really noticed his performances in the WJC tournament. I think he has enormous potential and I’m really looking forward to helping develop that and bring out the best in him. He can play centre or on the wing and that versatility is important as we build for the future in Manchester.”
Speaking about signing for the Phoenix Adam Walker was obviously excited when he said, “I want to play at the highest level and Manchester in the Elite League is the perfect opportunity. I had a great year in Swindon, the people there were very good to me and wanted me to re-sign. But, the chance to learn from the best in Tony and test myself against bigger, better, quicker, stronger players is something I want to do and I feel this move has come at the perfect time for me.”

Ferone Looking Forward to Return
News posted: 09-05-2006
Mobilx Newcastle Vipers co-owner Paul Ferone jetted off home last week and indicated he couldn't wait for the new season to start. Following Rob Wilson's confirmation that he will once again ice as player-coach, as expected Ferone has also confirmed that he will ice during the 2006-07 season.
Ferone commented: "I am back off home to Vancouver for a short period, which is something I do every summer. I normally catch up with friends and family, take it easy and relax. This summer is a little different though, being one of the directors means I will be spending the majority of the time in the UK getting the business ready for the new season, this will be a totally new experience for me, but an exciting period at the same time.
Rob (Wilson) predominately looks after the on-ice recruitment during the summer, so he spends most of his time on and off the phone to agents and players. I don't really get involved in that side, but I sometimes pass on contacts and give him my thoughts on a couple of guys".
During the 2005-06 season, Ferone became increasingly involved in the off-ice aspects of the club and the former Belfast Giant and Manchester Storm forward confirmed that both himself and Rob Wilson have a major part in the running of the club on a daily basis.
Ferone commented: "When myself, Paddy and Rob bought the club we knew that it would be hard work. Thankfully Rob's recruitment last summer and the group of guys we had meant that things came together nicely on the ice. However, just as important was moving the club forward off the ice and that's the area I will be concentrating my efforts on.
We have been planning for next season for roughly three months now, even before the playoffs started, so we are pretty excited about some of the plans we have for next season and the long term target of making the club the best not only on the ice but also off it".
Ferone also indicated that he is looking forward to next season's Elite League and the impending return of Ice Hockey to Manchester.
Ferone commented: "The Elite League was a pretty exciting set-up last season, I thought all the teams were entertaining and a credit to the sport within the UK. From the plans we have seen and what has been discussed at the EIHL board meetings, next season looks as though it could be just as enjoyable.
Even though last year was hard work and at time pretty stressful for me, I still enjoyed my hockey more than any other season in the UK. The return of Manchester is a great boost for the league, I enjoyed my season down there and I know how passionate the fans are about Ice Hockey. Last season especially, many Phoenix fans came to see us on a pretty regular basis which myself and Rob really appreciated that, it's great to see them back and hopefully Tony Hand can put a competitive team on the ice, which they deserve".

Matt Compton handed back-up goalie role
Thursday, 18th May 2006
Tony Hand has continued his early summer recruiting drive with the signing of Cheshire born netminder Matt Compton.
Standing six feet tall, 22-year old Matty Compton has been hoping for a chance to step up his hockey career and jumped at the chance to join the Manchester Phoenix as the number two goalie. Originally from the Chester area, Matt Compton played six years with the Flintshire Freeze including being a member of their English National League North Championship winning team in 2003-04 before spending last season icing with the Blackburn Hawks.
"I played there with Dave Clancy who was part of the first Phoenix team," noted Compton, "and he told me if I got the chance I should go for it. He told me he had a great experience with the club and so I'm looking forward to the challenge ahead. I've wanted to step up to help improve my game and progress my career, and I'm really excited."
Asked how the move came about Compton expanded, "I contacted the club and was made up to get a call from Tony Hand within a day. We chatted and he said he'd make a few calls and get back to me, and he did. Next thing, the contract offer arrived in the post and I couldn't pick the pen up quick enough to sign it and send it back."
Phoenix coach Tony Hand commented, "Matt knows from our talks what will be expected of him and I think he'll do just fine. He's a big goalie and will benefit from the more intensive training and conditioning that we'll put him through. It's a great chance for him to learn from a professional set-up and build upon the experience he has from his days under Mark Stokes and Bobby Haig, and it's important for the future that we give younger players a chance to step up."
As to who Matty Compton will play back-up to between the pipes Hand would not be drawn saying only, "the number one netminder is a key role and we've got a couple of irons in fires. But the best are still playing, so it may be a while before we can name that particular name - the homework on this is critical."

AC/DC Reform To Thrill Coventry Faithful - (18-05-2006)
Coventry Blaze supporters have a lot to look forward to next season as the Club are delighted to announce the return of centreman Dan Carlson to the team.
Carlson was a lynchpin in Blaze’s Grand Slam winning season of 2004-5. After leading the team in scoring, with 30 goals and 50 assists in 67 games, he moved to Germany to play for Munich Ice Panthers.
Blaze fans last saw Carlson when Munich played a challenge game at the Skydome in January and he scored one of his trademark short-handed goals.
Following his season on the continent he is returning to reform the ‘AC/DC’ scoring partnership that he forged with Adam Calder.
Carlson, an American, is 27 and has been a regular goal-scorer throughout his career. Blaze head coach Paul Thompson said: “I didn’t want Dan to leave Coventry at the end of the season before last, just like I didn’t want to lose Adam Calder. I am delighted that we have them both back in harness as it gives me two quality players who can feed off each other as the basis for the cornerstone of the team. “Dan puts in a huge amount of effort and is a quality, specialist centreman who has a great two-way game and speed that is terrifying for opposition defences. We know what we are getting with him and his signing promises much for the season ahead.”

Ahhh...no problem Steve!
It just seemed that this thread was sitting here when there's a whole forum sitting there and thus this isn't the place for signing reports.

Greg Owen Returns to Bison
News posted: 22-05-2006
The Basingstoke Bison are very pleased to announce the return of Great Britain International Greg Owen for the upcoming 2006-07 season. As per club policy no details of this agreement will be released to the public.
Departing General Manager/Head Coach Mark Bernard is very excited that the Bison have secured the services of Greg Owen for another campaign: “When Greg joined us last November he quickly proved his value to the Herd. He works extremely hard and is one of the most professional players I have ever had the privilege of working with.
Once he settled in with us he quickly became one of our most consistent and reliable performers. This was no more evident than in the third period of our final playoff game in Nottingham when Greg dropped down to block a shot in the final minute of the game. Greg brings heart and character everyday and that’s what we look for here in Basingstoke.”
Owen who attends University in Reading is also very happy about his return to the Hampshire club: “Basingstoke is such a great fit for me and my family at this point in our lives it allows me to continue playing the greatest sport while also looking after my future with my University courses. We all look to improve on last season and I for one can’t wait to get started in September.”
Bernard concluded with: “Greg is a class act on and off the ice and I know he is looking forward to taking his game to the next level. He had a late start last year but really came on down the stretch and that’s the way everyone should look for him to start this upcoming season.”

Vipers' delight as Shaun signs May 22 2006
By Lee Ryder, The Evening Chronicle Newcastle Vipers chief Rob Wilson has expressed his delight after agreeing terms with the man he labelled one of his Most Valuable Players last term, Shaun Johnson.
With Wilson resigned to losing Eastern European duo Matus Petricko and Jan Krajicek and missing out on Sheffield Steelers' Mark Dutiaume - who has signed for Belfast Giants - the capture of Johnson has been a big boost for the Canadian.
Vipers player-coach Wilson has made his `Brit pack' a priority, following the Elite League's decision to reduce the import quota for next season. Durham-born Johnson, 33, was an integral part of Wilson's play-off winning team and is seen by many as one of the hardest working players in the British game.
Johnson scored nine goals and 15 assists in League and Cup play, icing in over 60 contests last term.
Wilson said: "Shaun has always been a very hard- working player and brings that never-say-die attitude to every game.
"He's not the biggest of players and takes his fair share of knocks, but during the play-offs when we lost Cory Morgan, he really stood up and carried out an MVP role for me - I think Shuggy would agree with me that during those eight games he played some of the most solid hockey of his career.
"The British players are at a premium this summer. Guys who have the drive and experience of Shaun don't grow on trees - so I am delighted he has agreed to return."
Johnson said: "In my mind there was no decision to make.
"When I returned to the North East from Coventry I made it clear that if I was still wanted by Rob I would be finishing my career with the Vipers.
"Last season was beyond our wildest expectations. To finish second in the Elite League and to win the play-offs in our first season back at the top level is some achievement."

Wales signing adds jump to Blaze - (23-05-2006)
Coventry Blaze have added feisty forward Michael Wales to their roster for the forthcoming season.
The right shot 23-year-old, who can play on either wing, has appeared in the Elite League with Basingstoke Bison on several occasions on a two-way contract.
Wales was part of the Milton Keynes Lightning team that won the EPL play-offs last month and his fierce commitment to the game impressed coach Paul Thompson.
Blaze coach Paul Thompson said: “Muzzy will bring something to our third line that we’ve not had for a while. He has a terrific passion for the game and he jumped at the chance to move to the Elite League. He stands up for himself and his team-mates and enjoys getting in the faces of the opposition in a similar style to Kurt Irvine.”
Michael Wales said choosing to leave Milton Keynes was a hard decision, but he knows he is making the right step: “The one thing that has made it a lot easier is knowing that I am going from the best setup in the EPL, to the best setup in the EIHL. The prospect of being part of a team that has been so successful in the EIHL and still has that ambition to succeed made my decision that much easier. My role in the team will be bringing the energy and jump to the third line and the team.”

Reid leaves the continent for Coventry - (25-05-2006)
Coventry Blaze have announced the first new name to feature on the blue line for the forthcoming season.
Canadian Reid Simonton will bring his size and considerable experience to the Blaze defence.
Simonton has spent many years playing in Europe, and has enjoyed successful spells in the top leagues in Sweden, Germany and Austria. He has spent a year in the UK in the past, in the old Superleague with Bracknell Bees, and comes to Coventry from Denmark, having played for Herning Blue Fox last season.
It was with Herning that he caught the eye of Coventry Blaze head coach Paul Thompson, who was impressed with his no-nonsense style of defending. Blaze played against the Danish side in the Continental Cup in Grenoble, a tournament that gave Thompson three opportunities to check out the 33-year-old.
Thompson said: “Reid has played in leagues of a much higher standard and his signing is a great coup for the club. He is a great open ice hitter and has the sort of physical presence that we missed last year. He is not a goon but is the sort of player who makes opponents keep their heads up when they are skating.
“As you’d expect from someone who has played in these leagues, Reid his good skating and puck control skills. He has scored well for a defenceman in low scoring leagues.”
Simonton, who comes from Calgary, will be studying at Coventry University Business School, prolonging the fruitful relationship between the university and Blaze.
“I think we would struggle to compete with continental teams for salary but we are able to offer Reid the chance to study while playing for us and that is crucial,” Thompson added. “Reid is a strong, quality player who will add a solid presence to our blue line for next season and I expect him to be one of the best defencemen in the league.”

Thomas Signs New Steelers Contract
25 May, 2006 - Steelers head Coach today confirmed the re-signing of Mark Thomas and said "I dont know about a re-signing, this feels like a new signing, what with all the gossip about Mark joining Manchester"
Thomas joined the Steelers at Chrsitmas last season after the colapse of London Racers, he played a major part in the club moving forward and making the play off finals. Whistle said "I was very impressed with Mark as a player and as a person, he is a top guy and one we see being here in Sheffield for the long term
"Mark can play in a number of positions as we saw last year, he also plays the penalty kill very well, I have complete trust in him when he is on the ice and cant wait to continue working with him when August comes around"
Mark was delighted to be coming back to the Steelers "I cant wait" he said "There was much talk of me leaving but most of it was just that, talk. I always wanted to come back to the Steelers, I enjoyed playing for a big club, in the big building with the big crowd. When Dave and I started talking I was honest with him and told him that I wanted to come back and lets get the deal done, he was good to his word and now its confirmed I am delighted
"I enjoyed playing with Dave as coach last year, we worked hard and had fun and that is how i beleive it should be, I thought we were unlucky not to win the play offs and I am sure with a whole summer to prepare Dave will bring in the right players to make sure we go one step further next season"

Devils sign Blaze double - 27 May 2006 at 00:46
Cardiff Devils are delighted to be able to confirm a double signing from arch rivals the Coventry Blaze and welcome to Cardiff for the 2006-07 season, Russ Cowley and Lee Richardson.
Cardiff Devils Head Coach Ed Patterson has moved quickly in replacing GB international Jonathan Phillips and has secured to signature of another GB regular in Russ Cowley.
Originally from Edmonton Alberta, Cowley has spent the last 5 seasons with Devils arch rivals Coventry Blaze coming through their development system firstly on a two way contract with Swindon Lynx in 2001-02 until he secured a first place regular position with the Blaze in the BNL and was then part of the Triple Crown winning team of 2004-05.
Last season for the Blaze Cowley managed a respectable 12 gaols and 23 assists from 57 games and at the still tender age of 22, there is still plenty more this young hockey player can learn and Patterson is just the man to teach him.
“Russ is a great player who brings a lot to the table. He can score, play on the power play and kill penalties. He is one of those players who is ready to break out and take on a bigger role for his team. We are confident that Russ will have one of those years for Cardiff next season.”
And if that wasn’t enough Patterson has made yet another strong British signing in 23 year old Lee Richardson.
Older brother to Devils forward Mark Richardson, 23 year old Lee comes to the Devils after spending time last season with Coventry Blaze where he joined forces with Paul Thomson’s Blaze squad again following a season with the Bracknell Bees where he was part of their BNL winning team of 2004-05.
Patterson is looking to build a young, strong team for the forthcoming season and with younger brother Mark already committed for next season, Lee with make a great addition to the squad.
Ed Patterson says of Richardson,
“I think Lee is one of those players who is just a late bloomer. I’ve seen him play lots over the past two seasons and I think he has great potential. For a young player it’s hard to gain confidence when you don't get regular ice never mind going from one team to another. I believe with a solid role and regular shifts his confidence will grow and his game will reach a new level.”

Newcastle sign Blaze defenceman
30th May 2006
The Mobilx Newcastle Vipers are delighted to announce the signing of Slovakian defenceman Pavol Mihalik from Elite League rivals the Coventry Blaze. Mobilx Vipers player-coach Rob Wilson made the move to sign the former Slovakian international after admitting defeat in his attempts to get both Jan Krajicek and Pavlo Gomeniuk back to the Tyneside club.
Mihalik, 29, was a member of the Grand Slam winning Blaze team of two years ago, despite having to sit out the second part of the season due to a shoulder injury. A player that Wilson rates as having a bullet slapshot, Mihalik scored 10 goals and 20 assists last season in League and Cup play, icing in over 60 contests for the Skydome based outfit. Before coming to the UK in 2004, Mihalik had played for Slovan Harvard Bratislava, SKP Zilina and HK 36 Skalica in the Slovak Extraliga as well as a short stint with ASG Angers in France. A player that Coventry Blaze head coach Paul Thompson rated highly and described as "mobile, feisty and has a great shot". Mobilx Vipers player-coach Rob Wilson commented: "Like last year we have had a look at some opposition players that caused us problems when we faced them. One of these was Pavol Mihalik, he was a guy that really impressed me everytime we played Coventry. He is nothing spectacular, just a very solid defenceman who possesses a bullet of a slapshot. I have spoken to a number of coaches and players about Pavol and they only had good things to say about him, he's a guy that is very good in the dressing room and comes to play every night - something our team was built around last season. The best way to describe him would be a mix of Krajicek and Gomeniuk, he is a guy that has a bit of ruthless streak in his play and won't let other guys push him around - that is something I like in my players". With the signing of Mihalik having taken up one of the Mobilx Vipers import defensive slots, Wilson confirmed that either Jan Krajicek or Pavlo Gomeniuk would not be returning to the Metro Radio Arena for a second season. Wilson commented: "I spoke to both Jan and Pasha about next season, however they felt they could get better money elsewhere - figures that we couldn't compete with. I gave them both deadlines and when neither had made their minds up I decided to move for Mihalik. He fits in great with the tight budget we have here in Newcastle and I am sure he will be a valuable addition to our team for next season. Despite the signing of Mihalik, the door is not closed to either Jan or Pasha, it means that only one of them can now return - it's up to them now what they want to do".

Sandbeck adds quality and experience to Phoenix squad Friday, 2nd June 2006
Phoenix Head Coach Tony Hand is delighted to have clinched the signing of forward Mike Sandbeck citing "quality and experience" as the telling factors in persuading his former Edinburgh teammate to join him in Manchester.
"I'm pleased because Mike is a really good team player and great in the locker room," noted Hand. He added, "he came in after the start of the season last year and I was really impressed by the qualities he brought to the team. He made a big difference and that's testament to the quality of both his play and experience. In building a new team, you need guys who bring a lot to the table and Mike is just such a player, he'll be a big part of our club and the fans will really appreciate his contribution."
From college hockey with Northern Michigan University 28-year old Mike Sandbeck, originally from Mossbank in Saskatchewan, played four full seasons in the East Coast Hockey League before joining Edinburgh last season. At 6ft and 14 stone, he'll bring good size to the forward lines where he can play at centre or wing positions.
Speaking from Saskatchewan, the left-shot forward said, "I didn't get a full season last time around, coming in late and then picking up an ankle injury but, Tony has sold Manchester to me and I'm really looking forward coming to a new city and teaming up with him again. I liked playing for him last year and it's always good to be with someone you're familiar with. He's told me it's a whole new team and the chance to be in at the beginning is exciting."
Tony Hand also confirmed that he is in negotiations with more players and has issued two more contract offers. "The offers are out and we'll see what comes of them over the next few days. Sometimes these things move quickly, sometimes they don't, we're in no panic. We'll be patient and see how things go, we've got a good portfolio of guys to continue work on."
