"Want to improve the sporting integrity of the competition" seems to equal bending over backwards to ensure Belfast make the semis.

10 teams. 1 group of 6 and one of four. Bizarre play in as a result. Yeah that's not a great look is it.

Looks like they’ve had the opportunity to sort it out properly and of course make a complete balls up it. How you can say sporting integrity and then have a group of 6 and a group of 4 baffles me. It’s obvious why they’ve done it so it minimises travel but this this is supposed to be professional sport so either do it properly or get rid of it altogether. It should be 2 groups of 5 with seeded teams to make sure the split is fair

Been waiting 10 years for a new format, and I have to tip my hat to the EIHL in finding an even worse format to anything we've had before! Plus everyone gets more games against teams they already play all the time....yay.

For me, the ideal situation would have been 2 groups of 5, randomly drawn, then the top 2 in each group go through to the semis. Have a date reserved solely for the final, no other games to be played on that day. A neutral venue for the final as well.
What we’ve got now feels just as bland as before due to the predetermined groups. The only positive for me is that we’re playing Sheffield less

Won't ever happen, on the basis you don't need a doctorate in math to understand that format.

All they had to do was move Cardiff over to the other group. When you have to concede that they wont give up the big ties like Panthers v Steelers you have to accept it'll be a set 5. I said years ago that it should be a Celtic group and the English group. 1 tiny little thing and it's yet another huge farce.

I love the way different groups also play differently as well...
"Teams in Group A will play each other once at home, and once away. Teams in Group B will play on a two-home, two-away basis."
You could argue it's a way to prop up the smaller Scottish teams with more gates, but then Giants also benefit.
Weird set-up. Just put Cardiff in group B.
Either that or set which of the smaller teams are going to be in each group, then each year draw two of the arena teams at random for each group.
It's a head scratcher. At least show your workings. Because right now it just looks like a free pass for Belfast each year, which is not a good look

I'm enjoying the total backlash on the EIHL twitter account. Not one person thinks it makes sense. My personal favourite comment...

EIHL Challenge Cup = Just another excuse to chisel money and Sheffield to bend Nottingham over four more times a year.

An absolute and utter farce as usual from the EIHL. You couldn’t make it up. 🙄

They always find a way to balls it up, it's quite a talent really. The only positive for me is that we’re playing Sheffield less That's true. No mention of the final, I assume that'll still be the usual best team gets to play it at home? I'd rather they went back to the two legged tie.

More likely the organisers will add something new part way through the competition to muck it up further. Puts to bed the 11 team league, boy that would be one Cup format to look forward to from them.

This new format makes no sense, I'd scrap the cup completely, finish the league games slightly earlier and improve the playoffs to have 3 game series for the quarter and semi finals. Won't happen though cause they like the playoff weekend event, which I personally don't as you have to book tickets so early that your own team might not even make it to the weekend.

But that supposes that the ONLY reason for the Challenge Cup at all isn't the extra revenue at the beginning of the season that it generates. There is NO OTHER REASON for the Challenge Cup at all. The tight-knit EIHL is just a revenue generating monopoly with only ever one goal in mind - Generate MAXIMUM revenue for it's little group of owners. Why else would it even exist?

Plus the "booming" attendances the league crowed about, then they can afford to have a random cup group format that may some years results in fewer "rival" match-ups.

It's an utterly pointless money grab
