But to be honest John, all 8th spot gets you is an extra weekend of quarter final games, because No8 is never going to beat No1 over two legs.
And all getting a small team to POFW does,is give one of the big boys an easy ride to the final.

Was nothing easy about Sheffield's semi final last year, needed a shoddy powerplay call at the end as I remember.

True, while I don't expect whoever it is to defeat Cardiff, I seem to remember a few years back that Dundee almost overturned a 4-1 deficit against Sheffield. I believe it got a roar from the Panthers fans when Dundee went 3-1 up.

Eighth is likely to be Coventry or Manchester. As has been mentioned numerous times the Panthers have a poor record at the Skydome, as do Sheffield. Storm have won in Belfast and Braehead and been robbed twice against the Steelers, although we've yet to lay a finger on Nottingham or Cardiff.

Yeah it probably does, but I don't really have an issue with one of theirs getting to the weekend. Coventry could be the big losers from the conference system, Manchester have an easier job to nick that last spot. Good thinking Yotes. I think that most people were focusing on Braehead winning the League with the easier conference other than a team getting 8th spot with the easier schedule Yea, that too.

Coventry do get the raw end of the Conference system but if they get pipped by the Storm with a 0/5 head to head record they can't complain too much.
Also, the fixture list didn't favour them last year either and they ended up as playoff champions.

Coventry are not an 8th placed team though Shorty, they are only there because of the conference system. The second part is still correct though, because Fife are not beating Giants or Panthers in the semi !

Conference or otherwise.

I'm not reversing Jordan. I don't think you would find many takers who think Coventry are truly the 8th best team in the league. Yes they were terrible early doors, but they aren't terrible now.
I know who i would rather play in the semi final and it wouldn't be them !

They finished 8th over 52 games, they are the 8th best team.

They finished 8th over 52 games, they are the 8th best team. Give them 12 more games against the easy boys conference though.......and they would have finished 6th !

Have to agree with Iginla.
No way are Blaze the eighth best team in the league. The conference system (playing 32 out of their 52 games against the 4 best teams in the league) is the reason why they finish so low down.
Swap them with Braehead next season. See what happens.

Gonna have to disagree with you 2. The other conference is not the easiest. I believe there's some solid facts backing this up somewhere at the start of this thread.....

Correct, but under the current structure they finished 8th. Maybe your original post should have included a caveat of only applying to a Gardiner conference team.

League table ONLY including cross conference games. In final standings Order Sheffield (E) 34 points 85% Cardiff (E) 28 points 70% Braehead (G) 24 points 60% Belfast (E) 32 points 80% Nottingham (E) 32 points 80% Fife (G) 12 points 30% Dundee (G) 16 points 40% Coventry (E) 23 points 57.5% Manchester (G) 10 points 25% Edinburgh (G) 14 points 35% Cross conference order: Sheffield (E) 34 points 85% Belfast (E) 32 points 80% Nottingham (E) 32 points 80% Cardiff (E) 28 points 70% Braehead (G) 24 points 60% Coventry (E) 23 points 57.5% Dundee (G) 16 points 40% Edinburgh (G) 14 points 35% Fife (G) 12 points 30% Manchester (G) 10 points 25% The better teams with the exception of Braehead are ALL in the Erhardt.

Coventry got 51 points in total. From 32 Erhardt games they got 28 points From only 20 Gardiner games they got 23 points Had we all played each other the same number of times,Coventry would, have got more points. And it's a fair bet Fife and Dundee would have got less than they ended up with if they had played more games aginst Erhardt teams

So Coventry are not an eighth team, Steelers are not the best team and we are not a fifth place team.
All makes sense now.

But to be honest John, all 8th spot gets you is an extra weekend of quarter final games, because No8 is never going to beat No1 over two legs. And all getting a small team to POFW does,is give one of the big boys an easy ride to the final. Well, at least Fife won't need to write a team talk now.
