so doug remind me when were these barren years to which you refer? I think you will find that steelers havent gone two seasons without winning a trophy and that is what has spoiled the fanbase into thinking they are owed success...
Personally i still think that is the reason their fans are staying away. boring hockey without success.

Part of what you say is true Tex but, we started the season as Double Champions but with very small crowds even then. Your comment on Steelers playing boring hockey doesn't hold water in my opinion as I've watched every Sky game with other teams and most of them have been stinkers. There seems to be a trend on steeltalk for accusing the players of having "no passion" whenever they lose. Last Sunday I saw two periods of fairly even hockey with both teams trying hard, and one period with both teams also trying hard, but the difference was, that in the middle period Panthers never let up from the face-off and could/should have scored three goals any time in that period and no amount of passion could have stopped them. They were just better!

What are the reasons for the current situation in Sheffield Doug?
We all comment and surmise but it would be interesting to get the opinion of someone in the eye of the storm, so to speak.

Obviously Mark I can only give you what I personally think are the problems with others having their own views but basically they are manyfold. I'll try anyway. It probably started when Darren Brown ruined us and then Norton Lea took over. We possibly lost 1200/1500 fans almost overnight as people were sick of the politics etc. A lot of fans didn't like Lea but at least he kept us going. This is what I think started it but then, in no particular order, the other reasons are; 1. The same music game after game. 2. The "family" rubbish. 3. The Arena attitude (we apparently are now having to play Coventry at Ice Sheffield). 4. The walk-up price increase. 5. The dirty arena. 6. The closing of the end blocks. 7. The almost 5 minute entrance music. 8. Boring hockey (which I don't personally subscribe to, although I would like to see a few more hits). 9. Less fans= less atmosphere= less fans etc. These in isolation are mostly petty but they do have an accumalative effect. Me and my family have watched since 1994 and this season have missed, so far, three games at the Arena by choice and all the Ice Sheffield games. We are trying desperately to keep an interest but once we lose the habit then, well I don't know. I do get frustated at the tactics employed by Matsos e.g. Against Panthers he had 9 forwards but after the first period chose to rotate only 8, rarely having the same line out twice but, hey, thats just a personal gripe from me. We do however enjoy the Play-offs as much as ever, Steelers or no Steelers, as we like the atmosphere. There are some who want to move to Ice Sheffield permanently but if they do it will finish them. Also Mark you must remember we Sheffield folk are born moaners and never happy unless everything in the garden is rosie! Hockey has given us some great times and friends and we are conscious of that fact when we make our decisions to go and watch a game. The tragedy is, that two seasons ago we would not need to even think about it. We would just go.

That's a big list of problems added to which is, Do the owners/management of the club have the will or wish to try and change things. I'll say one thing, it seems we have more in common with Sheffield than perhaps we care to admit, half of the above could just as easily be said about the Panthers. And moaning, well I know plenty who love it down here, me included.

Incidentally Mark, go on Steeltalk and read the "Tickets at Arena" thread. More disgruntled customers!
