The EIHL "bosses" have prolly run out of fag packets so haven't decided on the format yet. Out of interest regarding Fife, have they started recruiting anyone yet? Aye, I hear the canteen staff are back next year

Windows mobile was crap in comparison Warren, Apple took a niche market and made it so easy to use and reliable that it become popular especially with the ability to add extra functionality... Oh and lets not forget how the look and feel have been copied something that was totally unique to the iphone... Back on topic, if the systems are that similar, cant be difficult to port this across to all the major formats especially if a degree of advertising is sold to fund it... Unfortunately, the systems are not similar from a development prospective. Apple use Objective-C which is basically C with a half-assed object oriented implementation. It doesn't handle memory management or do garbage collection. Windows Phone 7 is based upon .NET and as .NET is my background, I'd be biased to say any more I can't comment on Android as I haven't even looked at developing for it.

Too many phones get jail broken, and Apple are not making anywhere near the profit that they should be. Its why Apple are trying to sue Samsung at the moment. But still taking a % of every sale in their app market is more than 0% of app sales in the Android market. add to that, the pirated software market is higher within the Android World, due to the OS being more Open source. As for the court cases, I think at present all the major manufacturers are suing someone else and being sued by the rest. I believe Apple take a 30% cut of any revenue from app sales. Apple are suing Samsung because their Android phone is a rip-off of the iPhone, both in design and the UI.

I could easily write one but the Elite League doesn't publish any feeds so I wouldn't be able to pull the stats from the same source as the site uses. Screen scrape their website. I've actually started looking at resorting to scraping the site but even that's not trivial. The content isn't in an easily scrappable setup, e.g. to get news items, I would have to scrape the archive to get the titles and subtitles. I would then have to iterate over each news item and load it. Then, I would have to try and extract the content from the page which isn't straightforward given the content isn't wrapped in an element such as a div, it's just a bunch of paragraphs. I've emailed the media relations contact at the league to see about getting the data in a better format. Hopefully I'll get a reply this time. On an amusing side-note, check out the source at the bottom of the BIH homepage, looks like the site might have been hacked. ;D

Yes and no. If you read the contents by element ID <div id="LS_standings"> for example then slight changes to page layout wouldn't break your app. Only significant changes to that element. Also, you could have your app reference a web service (or other feed of whatever kind) that does the screen scraping, then if their site changes you'd just need to tweak your web service and your app wouldn't need an update. 'appy days! Sorry. Taxi for pantherfan007 ;D

Unfortunately that was about 2 months ago. I've now got rid of my iPhone and have swapped to a Windows 7 Phone. Can look at developing an app for that if their interested. How come you can only write apps for the phone you have at the time? The development tools come with a simulator/emulator but sometimes there are issues thrown up that you would only discover on the real device. So you can use the simulator for build testing but to do real testing you need to use the actual phone. And Apple uses old skool programming languages.

On a slightly related note, I offered to write an iPhone app for the Elite league (I'm a software engineer by trade) and emailed Andy French but have heard zip. You must be using the sopcast link which requires some software. The other one is web-based but asks you to verify by entering your mobile number.

All this talk about Fife's rink maybe not meeting EIHL standards... I doubt very much that this will be a factor. If the Fife ownership want to join, then you can bet that the critera will be met somehow... if they don't want to join, the facilities won't have anything to do with it. This is all about the people, not the place. I'll remember that after you've frozen your ass off there after a Saturday night game ;D

A lot of locals in Fife are convinced that our facilities aren't necessarily an issue. I've grown up with the current rink so have a sentimental attachment to it but would also like to see a more modern facility. Problem is, I can't see where the money would come from.
I believe we do actually have plexi-glass but to fit it would be a big job.
There was an article in a local paper about 2.5 years ago hinting that the current facility probably had another 5 years life in it and that the local authority would assist in the future of a new facility.
However, that was just before the world went belly up financially and there's been nothing further on this front.

Sometimes it's hard to tell what level your players are at until you test them, but our team of local lads have beaten both Dundee and Edinburgh this season. Sure, they may have iced 4 imports but that's still more than our 1 (and he's 37).
So I'm hopeful that when ;D we join the Elite league, quite a few of our Brits will step up.
