NIHL tonight: Blackburn Hawks 3 Solihull Barons 9 Sheffield Scimitars 5 Hull Jets 2 Widnes Wild 1 Billingham Stars 9 Nottingham Lions 4 Deeside Dragons 10
The Lions had to be satisfied with just two points this weekend as they came up against the big guns from Deeside tonight. The game sheet spoke very clearly as all of the Dragons goals came from their very experienced scorers with all ten coming from that elite group within the Deeside team. The Lions held out fairly well in the first fell well behind in the second and Deeside completed the task by also taking the third. The Lions fought as well as they could and put 41 shots on the Dragons net conceding 61 themselves. The Lions having lost both their senior goalies at the end of last season meant that the new guys would really come up against it but both Deacon Hardy and Ollie Goodman have got to settle into their senior role within the team and until this occurs, given the time, it will be an area where an element of insecurity may be noticeable on occasions. Both goalies had ice time tonight. Period scores: 3-4/1-4/0-2 Scorers: Toby Fisher 2, Zak Yokoyama 1, and Ethan Wilcox 1 and his first goal for the Lions.

Hi Bagheera Spoke to Matt to see how things had panned out following his altercation with a puck up at Sheffield last night. He had a swelling to the left side of his head but managed to drive back to Nottingham without incident. Went to QMC to be checked out and had a CT scan. All appeared ok and he returned home. The answer to your question is yes he will be on the Lions bench for the game this evening and he feels ok.

NIHL 1 results tonight: Solihull Barons 6 Whitley Warriors 2 Sheffield Scimitars 3 Nottingham Lions 5
A good solid performance from our guys although they did trail the Scimitars until the third period when their hard work paid off. Great to see this result going for the Lions as they were certainly disappointed by the narrow defeat here in Nottingham the last time these two met. First 3 goal haul for Zak this season and we hope for a few more and that’s for certain. Period scores: 1-0/2-1/1-3 Scorers: Zak Yokoyama 3, Owen Davies 1, Tristan Grimshaw 1 Be a tougher battle against Deeside Dragons on Sunday here in Nottingham with a 7.20 pm face off.

NIHL 1 Games this weekend:
Sat 14/10 Solihull Barons v Whitley Warriors Sheffield Scimitars v Nottingham Lions (Face off: 1.00pm)
Sun 15/10 Blackburn Hawks v Solihull Barons Sheffield Scimitars v Hull Jets Widnes Wild v Billingham Stars Nottingham Lions v Deeside Dragons (Face off: 7.20pm)
The Lions back in action again after having last weekend free of ice hockey. Two interesting games with the Lions travelling to Sheffield for a lunchtime fixture with a team that came back strong on their first visit to Nottingham taking the game 4-3. On Sunday the Dragons land in Nottingham for their first visit of the season. It would be true to say that both the Lions and Dragons have had a tough start to the season but the Lions did see off the Wild on their visit and the Dragons had a good home win last Sunday so this one will hopefully prove a good solid game with some entertaing end to end hockey. I feel both teams will be busting a gut to grab the points in this encounter.

Weekend results NIHL 1:
Sat 07/10 Hull Jets 3 Blackburn Hawks 2
Sun 08/10 Billingham Stars 3 Blackburn Hawks 5 Deeside Dragons 6 Sheffield Scimitars 0 Solihull Barons 3 Hull Jets 0 Widnes Wild 5 Whitley Warriors 2
Some strange results over the weekend with the Warriors appearing to continue to struggle and the Stars coming unstuck at home against the Hawks who themselves had failed to overcome the Jets the night before in Hull. Potentially the league could open up as the both the Stars and the Warriors experience reversals such as those observed over the weekend. I would think that there have been a few harsh words in the locker rooms following these results. It looks as though the Dragons have woken up with a good home win over the Scimitars.

Weekend results NIHL 1: Sat 30/09 Hull Jets 4 Whitley Warriors 2 Nottingham Lions 2 Billingham Stars 10
Sun 01/10 Blackburn Hawks 5 Sheffield Scimitars 4 Deeside 4 Solihull Barons 1 Whitley 2 Billingham Stars 9 Nottingham Lions 4 Widnes Wild 1
Billingham Stars are potentially the team of the season and on the night in Nottingham a number of the Lions failed to maintain their usual standard and this led to a punishing night for the home team. It has been sometime since our guys conceded double figures and the hope is that it will be a long time before we see that once again. It is worth noting that the Stars played Whitley Warriors at Whitley and beat them 2-9. Perhaps this might put things in perspective as regards the Lions result but does not excuse players that do not turn up on the night. Scorers: Zak Yokoyama 1 and Tristan Grimshaw 1 Over the last couple of seasons the Lions have struggled against Widnes Wild and the situation prior to the game looked a little dire as a number of players were released to play for the u18s in Telford. Several players were drafted in from the Lions NIHL 2 team. As it turned out the Wild turned up with a short but experienced bench strength. The first period was scoreless but the Lions upped their game and took the second 3-0. The third period was tied 1-1 so the first very welcome win of the season. Scorers: Kieron Gibbs 2, Michael Berehowskyj 1, Zak Yokoyama 1

Hi Kiev I have checked the EIHA site but nothing re the Gregor’s ban or appeal. On the Billingham Stars site the ban is mentioned but again no comment ref an appeal so I guess we shall see on Saturday.

Hi Kiev He really lined Parsons up for that hit and that is without a doubt. Apologies but not really up on the rules on this one re appeals but I would have thought that the ban stands but the appeal maybe about the number of games but this is just conjecture. Those more knowledgable about the rules might have the answer.

Weekend games NIHL 1: Sat 30/09 Hull Jets v Whitley Warriors Nottingham Lions v Billingham Stars Face off: 1.20pm (Arena)
Sun 01/10 Blackburn Hawks v Sheffield Scimitars Deeside Dragons v Solihull Barons Whitley Warriors v Billingham Stars Nottingham Lions v Widnes Wild
Two games for the Lions this weekend with the Saturday game to be played on the Arena with the early face off. Sunday the visitors are the Wild who the Lions met up at Widnes missing out in OT in a 4-3 result. In this game the Lions were ahead going into the third but, to put it mildly, the game reverted to old style hockey with the youngsters struggling to deal with the more physical pressure that was put upon them. They will certainly learn as the season progresses. Probably missing the two injured players from the Sheffield game last Sunday with Jack Crowston and the ‘old fella’ Luke Thomas taking knocks in that game. The u18s also have a game on Sunday so might lose a few more for that one.

A game that was there for the taking but some rather rash play led to the Scimitars coming back from 3-1 down in the third to a 3-4 win for the visitors. Both teams played a hard end to end game and with the Lions at the end of two periods with a 2-1 lead and controlling the game but instead of pushing home the advantage the Lions allowed the game to slip away. The loss of Luke Thomas and Jack Crowston with injuries did not help the Lions cause but cannot be the excuse for this disappointing result. Period scores: 1-0/1-1/1-3 Scorers: Toby Fisher, Zak Yokoyama, and Tristan Grimshaw

I have noted that last Sunday’s result between the Solihull Barons and Blackburn Hawks has been overturned following the Barons icing a banned player therefore their hard fought 4-3 overtime win has been awarded to the Hawks 0-5 due to this oversight. The player in question was Billy Crofts who moved from the Lions to the Barons during the off season but was carrying a two game ban. This was obviously missed somewhere along the line and the Barons missed out on their first win and with the EIHA then imposing a further two week ban on the player concerned. An unfortunate start to the season for the Hobs Moat team and the fans as this was a hard fought game by the home team only to be snatched away due to this error.

Weekend results: Sat 16/09 Billingham Stars 7 Deeside Dragons 2 Nottingham Lions 0 Whitley Warriors 2
The Lions held out well in the first ad third periods but conceded the two goals in the second. The Warriors are tipped to be potential winners in the league this season after the Solway Sharks moved on to the National League.
Sun 17/09 Deeside Dragons 3 Billingham Stars 8 Solihull Barons 4 Blackburn Hawks 3 O/T Whitley Warriors 3 Sheffield Scimitars 0 Widnes Wild 4 Nottingham Lions 3 O/T
Several of the Lions players played three games this weekend as some of the youngsters travelled after the Warriors game to play at Telford in the evening they then travelled on Sunday with the team to Widnes. The Lions played a good solid game with no scoring in the first. The Lions took the second period going into the third with the score at 0-2. In the third the Wild showed their Wild side as I was informed that they reverted hockey not seen since the 1980s with real bully boy tactics that managed to upset the Lions as they ran out 3-1 winners of the third and tying the game. Some rather lenient officiating certainly helped the home team and then in O/T the Lions took a penalty which opened up the opportunity for the Wild to wrap up the game. A well earned point but some obvious disappointment for the boys.
Scorers: Zak Yokoyama 2 and a goal for 16yr old James Mather who was one of the players putting in three games over the weekend.

Due to high humidity there was a persistent fog with the game being halted several times as the linesman’s vision of the ice pad was compromised. The teams agreed to continue the game with reservations and with the Lions not really wanting to endure another bus trip to the Hillhead rink at a later date. Period Scores: 2-1/2-0/1-0 Zak Yokoyama got the only Lions goal on a penalty shot Luca Sheldon was MOM as he faced 64 shots in what could only be described as difficult circumstances
I am not around for the next couple of weeks and with restricted Wi-Fi where I am going it might prove hard going to pick up the scores etc next weekend but I will attempt to get the info and post if possible.

No stats from the Lions game, result only at present.
Must admit the Saturday result at Hull was a bit of a surprise but the Stars bounced back against Sheffield. No shock re the other scores with the Warriors showing that they will be, as ever, hard to beat at home.

The Nottingham Lions have announced a development partnership with Peterborough Phantoms of the National League ahead of the 23/24 season that opens up a pathway for young players to further their hockey experience. This is a good move for both clubs because realistically the jump from NIHL 1 to Elite League is massive but a transition via the National League is an ideal springboard. The Phantoms have a second team that play in the NIHL 2 in the southern league that provide a small number of players but without a doubt at NIHL 1 level here in the North provides a greater number of potential players of a standard able to play at National League level. Several ex Nottingham players already play for the Phantoms including Tom Norton and Joe Gretton. This is a great opportunity for our boys to really up their game knowing that a pathway to a higher level is now available. I believe one Lions player has trained with the Phantoms and will be part of their bench strength this Saturday.

After what seems an awful long break the NIHL 1 23/24 season is upon us and the Lions have been preparing for the forthcming campaign. A few changes as with each season but in the main the bulk of last season's team are back with a few moving up from the juniors to fight for a place on the team. Quite frankly I find little interest in spending too much time trawling through what the other NIHL 1 teams are up to as it tends to be the usual player carousel, mainly in the north west, that becomes rather boring to say the least. Couple of interesting things have happened in the off season the main ones being Solway Sharks moving up to National League and Hull moving from NIHL 2 to NIHL 1 to take their place. The Lions first game as in the last season an away trip up to Whitley Warriors who must fancy their chances of a trophy or two having lost their main rival of the past few seasons as Solway have left the building. They will still have a big challenge with Billingham having come on strong particularly in the second half of last season. I am presently awaiting an announcement, as are we Lions supporters, at 7.00pm tonight. Do not know what it is as I do not have the inside track when the decision making occurs therefore we will know this evening folks.

The play off games saw Nottingham Lions, Blackburn Hawks, Deeside Dragons, and Widnes Wild eliminated over the two games home and away. With the Lions up against the league and cup champions there was no great challenge for the Solway Sharks but both games did get a little animated and certainly feisty. The play off semi finals take place on 8 April with Whitley Warriors facing their local rivals the Billingham Stars and the Solway Sharks playing the Solihull Barons.
For the Lions well that’s it the season is over and in a number of ways there has been progress with a number of new players introduced and some that have moved on to other teams some now playing at National League level. With the Lions it is always building and during the recess I feel sure there will be a few changes within the squad but hopefully we will have a nucleus of experienced guys around to bring on the new recruits. In the NIHL 1 it is always going to be hard going with little chance of picking up the few honours available but that goes for all of the others with big budgets and nought to show at the season’s end. One thing is certain the Lions will be there just hoping to cause the odd upset amongst the bigger clubs. It certainly was gratifying for me to see our guys grab a point from second top of league Billingham Stars in an enthralling 2-3 game here in Nottingham, our Lions had the Stars a bit worried in that one. Thanks to all of those involved behind the scenes particularly our brilliant media team. Many thanks to all of the officials for the time and effort that they put in to keep the show on the road. Thanks to all of the players, who pay to play, the coaches and management for all that you have put into, not only this seasons but over a number of seasons your commitment is unquestionable. Thanks also to all of the supporters your attendance at the home games is very welcome and appreciated by the team. On the downside The EIHA, to me anyway, failed to get their collective ducks in a line regarding up to date information on games and stats with me having to rely on NIHL Stats to provide the scores for which I thank them, they were at least reliable. What might happen during the off season is yet to be seen as there is an awareness that there are issues remaining as yet to be resolved and that have been alluded to by others in recent posts. Have a great summer and hopefully we will welcome you back for the 2023/24 season here in Nottingham.

I think Wolves 66 is pretty close with the comments regarding the financial hit to the Lions a purely amateur team with little in the way of meeting substantial demands for money that they clearly do not have. The punitive nature of the penalties, whatever they are, may possibly defy description and in some quarters, not the club, heads should hang in shame at the way this may have been handled. But we do come back to rumour and conjecture regarding this whole episode, but if it does turn out that the Lions are hit with a large financial penalty it will hurt and that’s for sure. The Nottingham Lions are probably the only true development team in the league with a fine record of producing good standard players giving youngsters an opportunity to play at a reasonably high level against seasoned opposition including imports and potential elite players that are on two way deals with teams such as Solway and others. Hopefully eventually the picture will become clearer for all concerned.
