The Lions made it a four point weekend with this second defeat of the Scimitars but this was no walk over as the Sheffield team set about putting right what they possibly perceived as a rather lack lustre performance against the Lions on home ice last night. In the first period the Scimitars really upped their game as they put real pressure on the Lions scoring two goals within the first eight minutes with the Lions managing to hit back with their first goal at around nineteen minutes to end the first 1-2. Ten minutes into the second the Lions brought the game level and took the lead at 38.46 finishing the period 3-2. In the third the Lions kept up the pressure but the Scimitars held out until at 56.01 the Lions scored their fourth goal and then saw out the game. Both teams tonight put in a full 60 minutes in a game that at times could have swung either way but the Lions kept their shape and stuck to the game plan to earn the points tonight.

A very welcome two points brought home from Ice Sheffield last night and a game where the Lions took all three periods. Refreshing to note that nine players were involved in the six goals scored. For the first time in a while I had sight of a game sheet and on this occasion name goal scorers and assists, a bit more work for me but I do like to name players that also played their part when goals are scored. Game stats against Scimitars are as follows: Period Scores: 0-2/0-1/2-3 Zak Yokoyama 4+0, Tyler Somerton 1+2, Tristan Grimshaw 1+0, Kieran Gibbs 0+2, Robert Oxley 0+2, Toby Fisher 0+1, Owen Davis 0+1, Luca Sheldon 0+1, James Mather 0+1 SOG: 27-44 MOM: Daniel Martin
The Lions go again tonight against the Scimitars on home ice with the face off at 7.20pm so with the Panthers away at Coventry all Panthers fans will be very welcome at the Nottingham Lions v the Sheffield Scimitars game tonight.

NIHL 1 Games this weekend
Sat 03/02 Deeside Dragons v Widnes Wild Hull Jets v Blackburn Hawks Sheffield Scimitars v Nottingham Lions (Face Off 4.40pm)
Sun 04/02 Billingham Stars v Widnes Wild Blackburn Hawks v Hull Jets Solihull Barons v Deeside Dragons Nottingham Lions v Sheffield Scimitars (Face Off 7.20pm)
The Lions have a double header against the Scimitars this weekend and these games will bring to an end the series of games against Sheffield this season in the league with the past two games being one win for each team. Back in September the Scimitars visited Nottingham and went home with the points in a narrow 3-4 game. The Lions did the return game bringing the points back home in yet another tight affair 3-5. Sheffield like Nottingham are battlers and both exhibit a tendency to be in the bottom half of the league as both clubs attempt to develop a squad generally from within their own junior system and with tight financial constraints that do not allow for paid players. Both teams do have a few victories to their name with the Scimitars recently beating the Solihull Barons and the Lions beating Widnes Wild. A win over any of the teams in NIHL 1 teams is always very welcome.

Sun 28/01 Solihull Barons 4 Blackburn Hawks 6 Billingham Stars 12 Hull Jets 3
Hull have achieved most of their success this season on home ice and pushed the top team the Stars at Hull but obviously came up against a rampant Stars team when they next met on Billingham’s home ice. A good first season for the outfit from Hull without a doubt. Blackburn dealt comfortably with the Barons home and away.

NIHL 1 Tonight’s results
Solihull Barons 8 Deeside Dragons 4 Widnes Wild 5 Blackburn Hawks 7 Billingham Stars 8 Nottingham Lions 2
The Lions worked the Stars harder than the score indicates with the Stars coach stating that the Lions put up a gritty performance in the first and second periods before the Stars made their experience count by finishing with a solid third period to wrap up the game. The Lions although losing the first period 3-0 actually outshot the stars 11-16 but failed to get the rewards that their efforts deserved. In the second period the Lions dominated and finished with a 1-1 tie but with the Stars now being 4-1 up. The third period started with the Lions on a five minute powerplay but conceded a short handed goal and the Stars now with the advantage and with the Lions now losing the impetus in the game they went on to concede a further three goals with an 8-2 final score. The Lions certainly made a game of it tonight and this was freely admitted by the Billingham bench so no points for the Lions but the guys left Billingham having made a point that was readily recognised by the opposition. MOM Nick Martin The only goal scorer that I am aware of tonight was Tyler Somerton, but once I have information ref the other scorer I will post it.

NIHL 1 Games this weekend
Sat 20/01 Solihull Barons v Deeside Dragons Widnes Wild v Blackburn Hawks Billingham Stars v Nottingham Lions (5.30pm Face Off)
Sun 21/01 Blackburn Hawks v Billingham Stars Sheffield Scimitars v Solihull Barons Whitley Warriors v Deeside Dragons Widnes Wild v Hull Jets
The Lions only game of the weekend could not be tougher as they travel to meet top of the league and potential champions the Billingham Stars. The Lions have not yet managed to get anything from the three games they have played against the Stars this season having lost both of the home games and the last away game so anything that shows a tightening up of the score line with this truly formidable outfit will be very welcome. The Stars have proved to have really dominated all comers this season having shown probably the greatest improvement of any club in the league of the last couple of seasons having brought together a very experienced squad and it certainly shows. No doubt the Lions will give 100% and give the Stars as good a game as is possible even with the odds stacked well and truly against them but go there knowing that every game played is at part of the learning curve no matter how tough the opposition.

NIHL 1 tonight’s results
Awaiting two of the the three results.
Nottingham Lions 2 Blackburn Hawks 3
The Lions put up a solid performance tonight against a Hawks team with a great depth of experience and with enough opportunities to get a result but it was not to be as has occurred in a number of games this season our guys just failed to capitalise on those opportunities. The Lions took the first period 1-0 but conceded a goal in the second to even up the score but in the third the Hawks grabbed the initiative pushing on to a 1-3 lead before the Lions hit back to score their second goal. The Lions did hit the iron work with the Hawks keeper well beaten but that’s a reflection of how a number of games have gone for our guys. The Lions did put in a full shift tonight and deserved better than they got. Scorers: Zak Yokoyama 2 MOM Isaac Ballinger (netminder)

NIHL 1 Last night’s results Hull Jets 4 Sheffield Scimitars 2 Widnes Wild 5 Solihull Barons 3
Last night’s game between Blackburn Hawks and Deeside Dragons did not go ahead due to ongoing investigations into a recent incident between a Hawks and.a Dragons player that led to some medical intervention for the Hawks player. I believe that the EIHA are involved in the investigation into this incident. Tonight’s game between the Lions and the Hawks is not affected and will go ahead as scheduled with a 7.20pm face off.

NIHL 1 Games this weekend
Sat 13/01 Blackburn Hawks v Deeside Dragons Hull Jets v Sheffield Scimitars Widnes Wild v Solihull Barons
Sun 14/01 Billingham Stars v Whitley Warriors Deeside Dragons v Widnes Wild Nottingham Lions v Blackburn Hawks (Face Off 7.20pm)
The game against the Hawks will be the first meeting of these two on the Lions home ice having faced them once already this season up in Blackburn where the home team took the points in an 8-4 game. Although there has been a high level of acrimony between these two on the ice and between respective management and coaching teams this appears to have thankfully settled over a couple of seasons. The Hawks are sitting comfortably mid table with a couple of games in hand over Whitley Warriors just one place above the Hawks so the points take on a greater significance therefore a lot to play for from their angle. The Lions have, as with every game in this division, have their work cut out to get something out of this game but they are more than capable of making life for the Hawks more difficult if they commit 100% each shift and for the whole of the game. The Hawks do have strength and experience in depth so yet another uphill battle for our guys but bags of experience on offer for the youngsters. Face off 7.20 pm.

NIHL 1 Results Sun 07/01 Deeside Dragons 6 Blackburn Hawks 3 Solihull Barons 6 Widnes Wild 5 O/T Whitley Warriors 5 Sheffield Scimitars 2 Nottingham Lions 3 Hull Jets 4 O/T
The Jets take the points in a game of real turnarounds with the first period tied 0-0. In the second the Lions turned up the pressure on their opponents ending the period up 3-1. The third saw the Jets fight back taking the period 0-2 and into overtime. As with the Lions up at Hull when it came to overtime the Jets did precisely what they did on home ice snatching the game winning goal. A bit of a sickener for the Lions but the chances were there tonight to put this game out of touch for the visitors but their depth of experience really made the difference on the night. Time to lick the wounds and move on to the next game. Scorers: Tristan Grimshaw 1, Zak Yokoyama 1, James Mather 1 Luca Sheldon faced 50 shots in the game. MOM Tristan Grimshaw

The Jets come to Nottingham having maintained their remarkable home run of wins this season and will be looking to achieving a four point weekend as they face the Lions this evening. This should prove an exciting encounter with the Lions wanting to get their new year off to a positive start and the Jets determined to scupper the home team’s ambitions. Face off is at 7.20pm. On a sad note it is Mike Urquart’s funeral on Monday 8th January and all at the Nottingham Club’s thoughts are with Laura, Jessica, and Jack as they bid farewell to husband, father, and for us hockey fans of long standing a never to be forgotten part of ice hockey’s evolution in Nottingham.

WELCOME BACK and a Happy New Year
NIHL 1 Games this weekend
Sat 06/01 Blackburn Hawks v Deeside Dragons Hull Jets v Widnes Wild Sheffield Scimitars v Billingham Stars
Sun 07/01 Deeside Dragons v Blackburn Hawks Solihull Barons v Widnes Wild Whitley Warriors v Sheffield Scimitars Nottingham Lions v Hull Jets (Face Off 7.20pm)
The Lions opening game of 2024 sees the return of the Hull Jets who last visited a number of seasons ago when both the Lions and the Jets were in NIHL 2. In those days it might be true to say that the Lions definitely had the edge over the Jets but since the Hull side moved up this season they have really caused a few upsets and grabbed a good few points in the process. The Jets are a different unit than in the past as they have picked up a number of well experienced players and that has shown in the results up to Christmas. The Lions have travelled to Hull and came away with a point in an overtime 5-4 loss and to be quite honest that result did surprise me as on home ice the Jets have taken some notable scalps having toppled all of the top teams during the early part of the season with home ice becoming a real stronghold. After the Christmas break it will be interesting to see how our guys measure up to the task before them on home ice this Sunday.

NIHL 1 Tonight’s results: Blackburn Hawks 4 Whitley Warriors 2 Solihull Barons 3 Sheffield Scimitars 2 (OT) Widnes Wild 1 Billingham Stars 7 Deeside Dragons 8 Nottingham Lions 2
The Lions travelled to Deeside with a short and very young bench strength therefore they were really going to be up against it facing a very experienced full strength Dragons team. Five of the Lions 16yr olds were playing their third game of the weekend after playing against the Barons on Saturday before travelling to play for the u18s in Manchester so those guys put in some shifts and that’s for certain. Overall this was a great effort by the team and they stuck to the task with the Dragons really applying the pressure throughout the game. The shots on goal speak for itself as the Dragons put 47 shots on the Lions net whilst generating only 19 shots themselves. The two goals in the game for the Lions came from Toby Fisher and a first senior goal for 16 yr old Nick Martin who also collected MOM. The guys now have a rest over Christmas. Merry Christmas and a happy new year from all involved with the Nottingham Lions. Period scores: 3-0/3-2/2-0

NIHL 1 Tonight’s results: Hull Jets 7 Deeside Dragons 6 (OT) Sheffield Scimitars 1 Widnes Wild 3 Nottingham Lions 2 Solihull Barons 6
The Lions squad were missing four key players tonight three from the defence and one forward. The Barons dominated the first period but did not crush the defiant home team who, although starting slowly, managed to hold out reasonably well. The Lions picked up the pace in the second and third periods but not sufficiently to turn the game to their advantage with the Barons taking the points and strengthening their second place in the league, for now. Period scores: 0-2/1-2/1-2 Scorers: Zak Yokoyama 2 MOM: Zak Yokoyama The Lions travel to North Wales on Sunday to play the Deeside Dragons in the final game of 2023.

Sun 17/12 Blackburn Hawks v Whitley Warriors Solihull Barons v Sheffield Scimitars Widnes Wild v Billingham Stars Deeside Dragonsv Nottingham Lions (Face off: 5.15pm
The Lions face our old friends from Down the road as the Solihull Barons play the Lions on the arena ice. Absolutely no luck against the Barons to date who are having their best season for a number of years and are presently in second place in the league. The Lions travel over to Wales on Sunday to meet the Deeside Dragons who are presently in fifth position in the league and within one point of third spot so all for the Welsh outfit to play for in this game. Deeside are particularly strong on home ice and have a good number of very vocal team supporters. Two particularly tough games for our guys with the odds firmly with the teams fighting for top honours and not wanting to offer any quarter to their opposition. Hopefully the Lions will play a tight game giving as little as possible to both challengers this weekend.

NIHL 1 Results tonight:
Billingham Stars 4 Blackburn Hawks 2 Deeside Dragons 4 Sheffield Scimitars 2 Whitley Warriors 4 Solihull Barons 7 Nottingham Lions 2 Widnes Wild 5
There was a one minute silence before the game tonight for Mike Urquart who died earlier today.
The Lions dominated for much of tonight's game but the old Widnes Wild bogey struck once more as the Wild were outshot and outplayed but ended up with the prize of the two points. How did that happen well they turned up with a young netminder who was absolutely up for the game and frustrated the hell out of the Nottingham team as he stopped 38 of the 40 shots on his net whilst we took 25 shots and conceded the game. Admitted we have two young netminders who were up until the beginning of the season probably out of the reckoning but the loss of the Lions 1 and 2 choice netminders meant that the youngsters had to be thrown into games out of necessity and the guys have given of their best considering their lack of bigger game experience, and they will improve given time. Good to see Connor Glossop back in the Lions strip once again and he put in a good performance that won him MOM deservedly tonight. Period Scores: 0-1/0-2/2-2 (1 eng) Scorers: Connor Glossop and Zak Yokoyama SOG: 40-25 Special mention for Zak Yokoyama who although not scoring in last night's game at Hull did collect 3 assists. As I do not have sight of game sheets the assists are missed and I only get goal scorers unfortunately. Gone are the days when all of the stats were ready and available.

RIP Mike Urquart Today we lost a man who I and many others remember as Panthers #22 playing on defence in the old barn. When Mike's hockey career came to an end he went into coaching and became a much respected coach passing on so much to the up and coming players who went on to play at the highest level both here and abroad. Under his tutorage of the young players the development of ice hockey moved onto another plain and this showed over the years. I remember him moving on to Guidford achieving so much there but he always had deep feelings for Nottingham and kept his finger firmly on the pulse of deveolpments here. When a post within the Junior Development Programme here in Nottingham became available Mike was the goto bloke for the job and he duly made the move. He was the heart of the Junior System for a number of years advising, guiding and supporting the coaches within the programme and he certainly made a positive contribution and of that there can be no doubt. He worked within the National Programmes coaching both the GB Womens Team and GB Students Team as they attended the World Student Winter Games (the Universiade) supporting Matt Bradbury as Head Coach to the teams. I do know that Matt and Mike developed a close relationship and on a personal level, having met Mike,I found him to be exceptionally personable and very friendly with a great sense of humour. I will always remember when I was talking about how to advance in the sport and he said develop a Canadian accent as it opens doors closed to many others within ice hockey. He did have this wry twinkle in his eye when he said this to me and that summed up the man. I along with many others will miss Mike and for ice hockey in Nottingham this nigh on brings to a close a profoundly sad and tragic year. My condolences to Laura and the family, a real hockey family because as some may not know Laura and the kids all played ice hockey at a very high level. I am sure there will be a tribute to Mike from the Lions and all of the Junior Development Programme and at other hockey venues today.

The Lions certainly gave the Jets a game tonight and we’re unfortunate not to get the result as the game ended with the Jets scoring the crucial overtime goal. As was mentioned earlier the Jets are a strong home team so our guys going up their and putting them under pressure was credit to the Lions team. The Lions did manage to win two periods.in the game. Sun 10/12 Billingham Stars v Blackburn Hawks Deeside Dragons v Sheffield Scimitars Whitley Warriors v Solihull Barons Nottingham Lions v Widnes Wild (Face off 7.20pm)
The Lions travel to Hull today to meet the Jets for the first time in several years, why several years, well the Jets had spent virtually all of their lives in the NIHL 2 and having achieved great success in that league moved up to NIHL 1 at the commencement of this season. It would be true to say that the Jets have adjusted very well particularly when playing at home having won 6 of their 7 wins on home ice and having beaten Billingham, Blackburn, and Deeside so we have an opponent that is definitely a power at home. This team does have some real depth and experience due to players returning to their home club after spending a number of seasons playing in the higher divisions. On Sunday, at last, we have a home game against the Widnes Wild with our record this season being a win for Widnes at home and a win for the Lions when the Wild came to Nottingham. This is a game that is hard to call but the Lions, if they dig deep, could take the points. The record against the Wild over the years has favoured the Widnes team but the win by the Lions earlier this season will have hopefully broken the pattern of the previous seasons. Face off against the Jets: 5.30pm Face off against the Wild: 7.20p

Had the chance, blimey twice in just a week, to speak with Matt Bradbury about his team’s performance against the Hawks. He went to Blackburn with 14 out players, 8 forwards and 6 defence, and with two of his defence men icing at 16 yrs of age. In the game he felt there were plenty of opportunities to make the game a much tighter affair and throughout kept the Hawks second and third lines well controlled as they only collected one goal in the game. The damage was inflicted by their lethal first line who collected the other seven goals between them. Lots of positives and had the Lions finishing been sharper, as he said, it would have proved a closer result. As Issac and Luca were unavailable in the nets for the Lions up stepped what might be classed as the third and fourth choice netminders Deacon Hardy and Oliver Goodman and they did a creditable job on the night against certainly a massively experienced and strong first line providing few opportunities to the Hawks other two lines. Blackburn have put together a strong squad this year but I certainly do not think strong enough to unseat the Billingham Stars unless injuries alter the balance in their favour. Period scores: 3-2/3-1/2-1 SOG: 40-34 Scorers: Zak Yokoyama 1, and the first three goal haul for Tyler Somerton MOM: Tyler Somerton

The Blackburn Hawks move up to third place in the league and within two points of second place with this win over the Lions tonight. The Lions did keep the period scores relatively tight but to be honest it was going to be a formidable task to even take a period against the Hawks especially on their home ice. Period score: 3-2/3-1/2-1 Awaiting goal scorers.
