NIHL 1 Games this weekend:
Sat 02/12 Billingham Stars v Solihull Barons
Sun 03/12 Solihull Barons v Hull Jets Whitley Warriors v Billingham Stars Widnes Wild v Deeside Dragons Blackburn Hawks v Nottingham Lions
The Lions hit the road once more as they travel to meet the Blackburn Hawks. The most recent history between our two clubs on and off the ice has, to put it mildly, been decidedly unpleasant but it is hoped that these past issues stay firmly in the past and do not flare once again. The last time the Lions went to play the Hawks they certainly received a fairly heated reception. The Hawks season has seen them within striking distance of the top three with 10 wins and 5 losses and they have caused the odd upset having beaten top of the league Billingham Stars this season. So the Lions, as always, have it all to do to snatch a result on Sunday but as they say hope on occasions springs eternal, this just might happen? Face off: 6.00pm.

Managed to catch up with Matt Bradbury Head Coach of the Lions for his views on the weekend games up in the north east against Billingham and Whitley. Matt said that you are always up against it with both of these teams as they are full of very experienced hockey players that have been on the circuit for a number of years so getting anything out of these games is always a bonus. On Saturday against top of the league Billingham the Lions went with 9 forwards and 5 defence and with a short bench he felt the Lions did as well as they could but felt the score possibly did not reflect the amount of effort his team put in against the Stars but they are a team that take some stopping. At Whitley Matt had 15 out players, with once again, 9 forwards and 6 defence. Whitley Warriors have a rather up and down season but once again with the experience they have available they are still a formidable outfit on their night and Matt felt the guys dealt well with the pressure and he said that the Lions did restrict the Warriors to 46 shots over the game whilst putting 40 shots on the Whitley net. A negative result wise over the weekend but the effort put in by the team combined with two long journeys and with a late night return to Nottingham. Matt still noted a number of positives with the youngsters who are gradually coming to terms with the transition from junior to senior ice hockey. It has to be also remembered that many of the Lions are still committed to their junior teams and the team are also attempting to integrate into the Lions 1 team players from the Lions 2 squad. Obviously there is a lot happening that generally goes unnoticed even by myself who only produce comments on each Lions game.

NIHL 1 Tonight’s results: Sun 26/11 Billingham Stars 12 Widnes Wild 2 Deeside Dragons 3 Blackburn Hawks 6 Solihull Barons 8 Sheffield Scimitars 1 Whitley Warriors 8 Nottingham Lions 3
Second trip over the weekend up north east this time to play Whitley Warriors. I have ascertained that the Lions went short benched to top team Billingham who trounced Widnes 12-2 tonight so that certainly puts into perspective Lions 7-1 loss on Saturday. Up at Hillheads the Lions came up short with a 8-3 loss but again I am unaware of bench strength for this game. Always difficult places to go and over the years the Lions have always found games up in the north east hard going to say the least.
Period scores: 4-2/2-1/2-0 Scorers: Tristan Grimshaw, Jack Crowston, and Tyler Somerton MOM: Isaac Ballinger

NIHL 1 Results: Sat 25/11 Blackburn Hawks 5 Whitley Warriors 1 Hull Jets 3 Solihull Barons 6 Sheffield Scimitars 2 Deeside Dragons 5 Billingham Stars 7 Nottingham Lions 1
The Lions went to Billingham knowing that it was a game where they would battle to gain anything as the top of the league Stars do not give much away and certainly not this season. The Lions kept the game tight for the first two periods but then struggled to hold the Stars in the third period. Credit to the guys they held very well for the first forty minutes and that was quite a task against the depth of experience they were up against and, on their home ice. Period scores: 1-0/2-1/4-0 The Lions only goal was scored by Zak Yokoyama The MOM went deservedly to netminder Luca Sheldon

NIHL 1 Games this weekend:
Sat 25/11 Blackburn Hawks v Whitley Warriors Hull Jets v Solihull Barons Sheffield Scimitars v Deeside Dragons Billingham Stars v Nottingham Lions (Face off 6.00pm)
Sun 26/11 Billingham Stars v Widnes Wild Deeside Dragons v Blackburn Hawks Solihull Barons v Sheffield Scimitars Whitley Warriors v Nottingham Lions
A very challenging weekend for the Lions and a bit of an expensive outing for the players as they head up to the north east for the rearranged game against Billingham Stars on Saturday and a Sunday trip to Hillheads to play the WHitley Warriors. There might be some shuffling of the squad I would think to cover both of these games as this would prove a formidable commitment for some of the players both in time and in financial terms. Whatever the games will be played and that's for sure.

NIHL1 weekend results update: Sun 19/11 Blackburn Hawks 9 Deeside Dragons 3 Whitley Warriors 4 Hull Jets 3
I must have suffered a senior moment as the Widnes Wild v Sheffield was not scheduled for 19/11 but somehow I included this non game. Note to self, must read game schedule more carefully.

NIHL 1 Weekend results (to date)
Sat 18/11 Hull Jets 3 Whitley Warriors 4 (S/O)
Sun 19/11 Solihull Barons 6 Nottingham Lions 1
In tonight's game the Lions overall workrate was looking good and stuck to the game plan, due to this they were able to stay well within striking distance of the opposition throughout the first two periods. In the third the impetus appeared to have got lost somewhat possibly resulting in a greater goal margin than was anticipated given the Lions earlier efforts in this game. Period Scores: 1-0/2-1/3-0 Goal Scorer: Toby Fisher
Awaiting results from tonight's other games.

Hi kievthegreat, absolutely no thunder to steal I think I ran out of that commodity sometime ago.I was aware of the situation but I tend to tread carefully with the internal stuff and politics unless I get really teed off and then I post.I am very aware of the shambles exhibited by the EIHA on occasions allied to a some very poor management style that can appear over dictatorial towards some whilst leniency occuring with some who I would have difficulty in warming to at the best of times. Anyway
NIHL 1 games this weekend:
Sat 18/11 Hull Jets v Whitley Warriors
Sun 19/11 Blackburn Hawks v Deeside Dragons Whitley Warriors v Hull Jets Widnes Wild v Sheffield Scimitars Solihull Barons v Nottingham Lions (Face Off: 5.30pm)
The Lions take the relatively short trip over to the Hobs Moat rink to face the Barons. Always a tough old venue this one but hopefully our guys can play a tight game against a team they seldom overcome, but, on a positive note there was recently one of the most encouraging results when the Barons visited Nottingham and the Lions, at last, took a point in a 6-7 O/T loss. It will be a lot more difficult at the Hobs Moat to grab a point or even two but you just never know hockey is a funny old game.

NIHL1 Weekend results:
Sat 11/11 Billingham Stars 5 Sheffield Scimitars 0 Widnes Wild 3 Solihull Barons 4
Sun 12/11 Deeside Dragons 4 Hull Jets 1 Sheffield Scimitars 3 Widnes Wild 4 (S/O) Whitley Warriors 3 Blackburn Hawks 2 Nottingham Lions 2 Billingham Stars 5
The Lions came up against top of the shop in the Billingham Stars and after a game in which the Lions actually won a period they were eventually beaten by the goals scored in the final period including a late empty net goal. A generally better showing against a superior opposition but not enough to gain anything in the end but the Lions did not collapse under the type of pressure teams such as the Stars can inflict on teams at the lower end of the league. Period scores: 0-1/2-1/0-3 (including the eng) Scorers of the Lions goals unavailable, for now.

NIHL 1 Games this weekend:
Sat 11/23 Billingham Stars v Sheffield Scimitars Widnes Wild v Solihull Barons
Sun 12/23 Deeside Dragons v Hull Jets Sheffield Scimitars v Widnes Wild Whitley Warriors v Blackburn Hawks Nottingham Lions v Billingham Stars (Face Off 7.20pm)
Billingham Stars are currently leading the division and are certainly looking very confident and comfortable at the moment but both Deeside and Blackburn have picked up results of late and sit only two points behind the league leader therefore the Stars have got to keep producing the points to retain that slim lead. The Lions have struggled of late against the top teams and might feel it's about time a couple of points came their way but against the Stars they will have it all to do,and more to achieve that aim. I feel sure the guys will give it their best shot and being a predominantly young team will gain a great deal experientially from all games against the top teams but the odd point would be very welcome

NIHL1 weekend results
Sat 04/11 Hull Jets 4 Widnes Wild 2 Nottingham Lions 3 Deeside Dragons 10
Sun 05/11 Blackburn Hawks 7 Solihull Barons 3 Sheffield Scimitars 4 Whitley Warriors 3 (S/O) Widnes Wild 0 Hull Jets 5 Deeside Dragons 6 Nottingham Lions 0
As expected Deeside Dragons proved too much to handle although the Lions manage 39 shots on the Deeside goal at home and 27 in the away game. Spoke briefly to Matt Bradbury regarding both results over the weekend and he felt that his predominantly young team coped very well against a superior opposition brimming with experience. Playing on Saturday given recent tragic events he felt his guys might have suffered somewhat but instead, although being very aware of all that was occurring that day, they stuck to the task in front of them extremely well. It was a long trip over to Deeside on Sunday but again he felt the Lions performed well and gained a great deal of experience over the whole weekend although conceding the points, but to a formidable team in the Dragons.
Period Scores Saturday: 0-4/3-5/0-1 Period Scores Sunday: 0-0/3-0/3-0 Scorers Saturday: Tristan Grimshaw 1, Tyler Somerton 1, Zak Yokoyama 1

NIHL 1 Games this weekend:
Sat 4/11 Hull Jets v Widnes Wild Nottingham Lions v Deeside Dragons (Face Off:12.00)
Sun 5/11 Blackburn Hawks v Solihull Barons Sheffield Scimitars v Whitley Warriors Widnes Wild v Hull Jets Deeside Dragons v Nottingham Lions (Face Off: 5.15 pm)
The Lions recommence their season with a home game on the arena ice against the Deeside Dragons with the return game at Deeside on Sunday. It goes without saying the home game is going to be an amazingly tough one in a number of ways not only from the formidable Dragons but following the tragic events of the past week that have shook the ice hockey world to it’s core. To also play on the Panthers home ice on the day of remembrance of a young and talented player so tragically taken in the game that proved to be his life is going to be hard going for all of the Lions team and management. Adam Johnson will be remembered and honoured of that there is no doubt in what form that will take I have no knowledge at this time.
From the playing angle and the game against the Dragons it would be true to say this is a massive uphill task for our guys as the last visit to Nottingham in October we were definitely outplayed and outscored as the Dragons took the points 4-10. They have power and experience in great depth and have just added their second import in Jakub Hajek to join Petr Valusiak. Of the Brits, well where do you start, messrs Parsons, McKinney,Dickinson, Lovell, Wainwright, Kennedy, and more. The Deeside team arrive tomorrow having won their last 5 games and having put 30 goals past their opponents, that is the challenge for the Lions to face let’s hope for a tighter finish in this one.
The Lions are to raffle a signed and framed Sam Herr shirt from the Continental Cup campaign. The funds raised will initially be used to provide protective equipment including neck guards for all players who do not currently have this vital piece of equipment. Any remaining monies will be donated to the Panthers official fund raiser.
A profoundly sad for all involved in ice hockey and a sad day on which to return to league action for the Lions, and that’s for sure.

On the subject of neck protection, junior hockey players in the uk do wear neck protection but to what age of that I am uncertain. Perhaps someone has that information to hand?

Suttonian posted that Gary Rippingale’s No3 shirt was retired following his death aged just 18yrs old. I was reminded that Gary passed away 31 years ago today when Michelle Gary’s sister posted this on facebook. A sad day remembered by so many particularly today.

Due to the tragic events in Sheffield last night leading to the loss of life of Adam Johnson NIHL National League games were postponed. Bristol Bulldogs travelled to Romford for their game but having arrived both teams and coaches decided that the game would not go ahead. In NIHL 1 Deeside Dragons v Solihull Barons, Whitley Warriors v Widnes Wild, and Sheffield Scimitars v Blackburn Hawks went ahead although many fans felt this inappropriate given the circumstances particularly the Sheffield Scimitars game but those games were played. I have made the decision that the results of these games will not be recorded due to the circumstances prevailing following the tragedy of last night.

The Nottingham Lions game away at Billingham Stars has been postponed following the tragic accident leading to the death of Adam Johnson. This was felt an appropriate response given the events of last evening in Sheffield with postponement offered to the Nottingham club by the EIHA and with the agreement of the Billingham club.

Following the tragic death of Panthers player Adam Johnson the away game Billingham Stars v Nottingham Lions has been cancelled. The whole of the Nottingham Lions teams are devastated following the accident that led to Adam’s untimely death at aged just 29 and with an ice hockey career so tragically ended. Our thoughts and prayers are with the whole of the hockey family. Our sincere condolences to the Adam’s family on this most awful and what will be a long remembered day in the history of this Nottingham club and ice hockey as a whole.

NIHL 1 Games this weekend: Sat 28.10 Solihull Barons v Widnes Wild
Sun 29.10 Deeside Dragons v Solihull Barons Sheffield Scimitars v Blackburn Hawks Whitley Warriors v Widnes Wild Billingham Stars v Nottingham Lions (Face off: 5.30pm)
The Lions are on the road to face top of the league Billingham Stars who appear quite comfortable with their quite dominant start to the season. The Stars are a strong unit and have slipped up on the very rare occasions but they have come a cropper when expected to deal with an opponent and fell short but as said these occasions do not occur on a regular basis with this team. The Lions have it all to do and hopefully will go there and make a game of it and push the Stars so that they will at least realise they have been in a game where they have to dig deep to overcome a determined Lions outfit. Give Billingham the opportunities and they will make you pay dearly and the Lions will have to be aware of the very real fact in this game. A tight score line would be a good outcome and a win an absolute boost for our guys.

NIHL 1 weekend results: Sat 21/10 Hull Jets 6 Sheffield Scimitars 1
Sun 22/10 Billingham Stars 6 Hull Jets 3 Blackburn Hawks 3 Widnes Wild 5 Whitley Warriors 0 Deeside Dragons 2 Nottingham Lions 6 Solihull Barons 7 (O/T)
It’s a tough old life is ice hockey and tonight proved that very point as the underdogs gave the Barons a good run for their money making them pull out all the stops to take the points. Having put the Hawks to the sword last Sunday the Barons may have come to Nottingham with the idea that the points were in the bag and would be gained without breaking sweat but how wrong can you be. The Lions in the first were at one stage 4-1 to the good but the Barons hit back losing the first 4-3. In the second the Lions kept up the momentum finishing that period with a 6-4 lead. The Barons hit back in the third and tied the game with a 0-2 period and then into overtime. The game ended in the last couple of minutes of O/T with Daniel Mulcahy scoring the Barons game winning goal. A point won or a point lost might be asked given the lead the Lions carved out but a team requires a great deal of experience to see out a game defensively against the masses of experience of the paid players our guys were up against so in my book this was a point won with only the hope that they might have got this one over the line, but I am somewhat of a realist, maybe one day. A number of key players missing tonight including Owen Davis, Kieran Gibbs, Alexander Cleves, and a couple of the newer youngsters Dan and Nick Martin. Good to see Luke Thomas, Tyler Somerton, Jack Crowston, and James Mather back on the ice.
Period scores: 4-3/2-1/0-3 O/T Scorers: Tristan Grimshaw 2, Michael Berehowskyj 1, Zak Yokoyama 1, and a special mention for 16yr old James Mather who picked up a couple of goals. In nets tonight Isaac Ballinger MOM Luke Birchnall. Not at all bad for this 16yr old.

NIHL 1 games this weekend:
Sat 21/10 Hull Jets v Sheffield Scimitars
Sun 22/10 Billingham Stars v Hull Jets Blackburn Hawks v Widnes Wild Whitley Warriors v Deeside Dragons Nottingham Lions v Solihull Barons (Face off: 7.20pm)
The Lions face the Barons this Sunday a game that will certainly stretch whatever resources the home team have to their very limits as the Solihull team have had a really good run of late culminating in a nine goal haul away to the Blackburn Hawks last Sunday following a home win on the Saturday. The Dragons proved a massive challenge for the Lions last Sunday following a decent win for our guys against the Scimitars on the Saturday and likewise the Barons will provide yet another formidable challenge this coming Sunday. No Panthers home game and with the schools being on a half term break this might prove a good time to take the youngsters to a game. (Face off: 7.20pm)
