Back on page NINE I promised RICH that I would get up in the loft for the items/info I still had on the Ashfield Islanders when I was with them. I am getting old thus have only just got out again (lol). Rob Jovanovich,Mick Morley have mentioned a few players but forgive me as I cross reference them with what I have here. Found this pic of the team.Alec Woodhouse on the left who was Secretary and me with S.S. type boots (just got off my bike) on the right.Plus picture of the Sutton Centre.Where he photographer was taking the pic probably by the goal this end. i426.photobucket.com/albums/pp343/spikc/SuttonCentre.jpgi426.photobucket.com/albums/pp343/spikc/AshfieldIslanders-1.jpgI have here the 84-85 stats that show 16 games haven been played. Two were won.Against Peterborough Titans 7-1 and Solihull Buffaloes (Knights) 6-1 the heartache was the 2-20 and 1-36 losing scorelines on visits to the new Oxford outfit. (ouch) In the players career records I had Dove,Emerson,O-Donnell,Saunders,Voicey,Whitemoor and Woodhouse playing out all 12 games.Other players were Cutbush,Evers,Hussain,Krupinski,McGrath,McWilliams,Marriott(Can.Import-whoose sister played in the Nottm Wildcats basketball team at the time),Nixon,Pinkett,Powell,Pusztai,Sharpe,Smith, teece,Taylor,White,Whitelaw,Aubrey and Slade (as guest)...Netminders Spencer,Burnham and as guests French,Budd and Havenhand. Now theres a few names for you although only Surnames. British League record, played 12...GF 43 GA 134.

Wow, good work Spik! I joined that group of guys when they had stopped playing and I was in the Nottingham junior system. The picture is great, Rich Spencer, Johnny Pusztai and Paul woodhouse all taught me a hell of a lot about the game... although they looked very different Whats the name of the guy sat next to Rich Spencer? Did they play ED1 or was the league system different back then?

Eric Bertrand at a guess, although I looked him up and theres no record of him getting the callup after Bracknell Eric Bertrand is right. As I said, you'll struggle to find a record of the call up unless there's somewhere on the web of all transactions made by the Avs that year. Geeky me just remembered seeing it. FWIW he was Hershey's top scorer that year.

On that 2nd picture of the Islanders how much does the guy on the front row 3rd from the left look like Rodney from 'Only fools and Horses'? I think very much so

British League Div2 was what I recall as the league excepted into by the British Ice-Hockey Association (BIHA) as it was known then. From my programme notes in Peterborough I had stated that 4 a side games hd been played at Sutton. Then the Sutton Amteur Skaters affiliated to the English association , played 3 challenge games and got a grant which aided acceptence by the aforemention BIHA.This was as long as they changed name as Sutton could have denoted 'Bonnington', 'Coalfield' etc....They pressed for an enlargement of ice pad but I can't recall if the building could do this.Anyway the glass between them and a bowls area was also another reason why games were not allowed other than scrimmages.

Ah yeh the windows into the bowls room ;D As an u16 I spent a lot of my time watching the bowls and not listening to the coach, probably why I turned out like I did haha Also the boards were bolted in where the players get onto the ice so at least once a month someone would have a nasty fall getting onto the ice where the bolt has come out. There was talk every week of an extension to the ice pad but its only recently happened. Il be intrested to see what its like now. I gotta admit though I wont be too nostalgic if its not like before

Been having a look through some of the older pics in my collection, taken by my mate Steve from the back of block 9. Panthers v Billingham Bombers, 14 November 1981. (Can't believe it's nearly 30 years ago) Panthers players (l to r): Chris Keward, Jeff Andison showing how to finish a check (if you're a Panthers fan)/cross-checking (if you're a Billingham fan), Doug Withenshaw, Kenny MacDonald, Dwayne Keward. The Billingham player being checked is Kit Harrison, a very good player if I recall correctly, but note he's wearing the old tubular skates. Other points of interest: The old boards with the kick-plate the same colour as the puck (!). The zamboni squeezed in the corner. It's miraculous no-one got run over all the years we were in the old place. The old coffee machine in the corner. All you young 'uns moaning about the catering at the NIC, you don't know how good you've got it, I say you don't know how good you've got it etc etc.

Panthers v Whitley Warriors. That's Dwayne Keward on the bottom, under a player called C Burdis, of whom I'm afraid I have no recollection whatsoever. On the back of this photo I have written, "Bremner (hitting Walton), O'Higgins (standing)". That's Dave Graham in goal for Whitley, and just visible with the silver hair is linesman Jack Wanless, who must have been about 60 and was far too nice a man to be involved in rough-houses like this. Other interesting points (well, I think they are) are that Whitley out-shot us 68-54, so must have been a pretty attacking game (Whitley won 7-3), and the date of the game - 29 May 1982. But it wasn't the final game of the season. We played Solihull on 2 June, out-shooting them 100-33 and winning 21-1. (How about that for beer league, Chris?) This was an improvement on the previous season, our first in the modern era, when the season ended (unbelievably) on 13 June 1981 against the Billingham reserve team, the Buccaneers, who beat us 6-2. We've come a long way, you know.

Talking of Paul O'Higgins, here he is. Known as Mex because of his moustache. No. 19, and an all-round good lad.

And while delving back to the furthest reaches of our modern history, here's the oldest game-sheet I have a copy of, from our second game back - 4 October 1980. Some memory-stirring names on there, methinks. Russ Timmins, now sadly passed away. Dave Randall, my first hockey hero. Ken Taggart who went on to referee with such distinction and subsequently put so much time into behind the scenes administration at various levels of our sport. The Georgio brothers playing for Avon. And, of course, Panthers no.18 Johnny Bennett, now Johnny Putszai, who in the recent veterans charity game made such an impression (in the ice when he fell over ;D) Note the attendance is already over 1,400, a very big crowd by the standards of the day. Note also the league at the top - the Inter-City League. And here's a pic from the game, taken by Helen who is nowadays to be found selling 50-50 tickets at our games, and showing Paul O'Higgins scoring. Looks like a completely different era, doesn't it, but then, I suppose it was. (If anyone has a copy of the sheet from the first game (v. Solihull, 20 September 1980), I'd love a copy myself please.)

I was younger than you stef but still knew all the 'rude' songs' from the NOBS Not rude. Educational. Left nothing to the imagination, eh? ;D "The first time I met her she was all dressed in white....." "I used to work in Chicago in an old department store....." "It was on the good ship Venus....." "Three German officers crossed the line....." "I met a gal, in New Orleans....." "We got married on Friday....." "If I was not upon this bus, somewhere else I'd rather be....." "Was a girl was no good, took a boy into a wood....." "I am the music man, I come from down your way....." "He gave me inches one....." (sung by the ladies, that one) "I was walking down the street one day. I saw a house on fire....." "The mayor of Bayswater, he had a pretty daughter....." "Tie me kangaroo down, sport....." (not the Rolf Harris version) Don't forget as well Old MacDonald's farm down the aisle on the bus. "And the dogs were dogging it here, and the dogs were dogging it there....." Etc etc. I'm sure there were more. Those were also the days I could recite all of Eskimo Nell from memory. ".....With a flick of her thigh she sucked him dry With the ease of a vacuum cleaner....." Classic. Can't remember it all now, unfortunately.

What about 'The day we went to Bangor'?........

Brought back some memories of away trips there Stef.. And as for this politically correct society/arena we now live in, language did not seem to be such a problem in the days of the old stadium with home fans behind the away team slagging them off with colourful language throughout most games to the point fife lost it big time once..

What about 'The day we went to Bangor'?........ Blackpool wasn't it, Mick? "Didn't we have a terrible time the day we went to Blackpool, A horrible day, we got drunk on the way, and spent our money on chips and bingo Hour after hour, we sat in the bar and we drank a barrel of cider, And on the way back I was sick over Jack, as the rain came down" And so on........... (Mike Harding, I think)

It's funny how unimportant the taking of a photo is till some years later. Stef has PM'd me to say how I ought to display this one for all to see of Matt Bradbury in the foreground (originally penned to the UNI WORLD TOURNEY thread). In the background is one of the guys we lost through a sudden death. Young Gary Rippengale (on the right) , a great prospect who died after a night out with the boys. I won't go into detail but he passed away at home. The photo will bring back memories of the corridor by the dressing rooms and bar at the back there. i426.photobucket.com/albums/pp343/spikc/Brads-1.jpg

A little while ago we had a Robin Andrew theme night. Tonight it's the turn of.............Gavin Fraser. Signed from Aviemore Blackhawks, Big Gav wore the number 6 shirt with distinction for 11 seasons from 1982/3. He played 396 games and scored a very even looking 210 goals + 210 assists, sitting 592 PIMs in the process. Never gave less than 100% and was rightfully one of our most popular players of that era. My most enduring memory of Gav is how, when he got excited, his broad Scottish brogue lapsed into something completely unintelligible.
