One thing you could rely on with Gav is that he was always in the thick of the action. Panthers 17 Blackpool Seagulls 3, New Year's Day 1983. Just about visible on the Seagulls bench, wearing no. 20, is one of the Simms twins who skated rings round defences all season. Like bookends they were: you simply couldn't tell them apart (except for their numbers). Panthers 4 Dundee Rockets 5, 20 April 1986. Panthers 19 Streatham 7, 17 December 1988 (Paul Adey 4+8 ). This was the Christmas game with loads of fighting when Eric kept playing carols on the organ every time they started again. Gav had another fight later and got a match penalty.

Now, you might have got the impression so far that all Gav did was fight. Well, not all the time. Sometimes he tried to keep the peace. Panthers 4 Cleveland Bombers 10, 30 March 1985. Spot quiz - who's Panthers no. 18? Panthers 7 Dundee Rockets 9, 7 December 1985

He did his bit shot blocking and tying up defencemen. Tangling with Whitley's Mike Rowe (he whose chin had a legendary co-incidence with Selmar's fist ).............. ........and Terry Ord.

He also scored a few himself. Gav's speciality was the breakaway goal. If you think Drouin was good, this guy was mustard. Put it away every time. Panthers 5 East York Terriers 6, 25 November 1985. Gav's already smiling as this one goes in. Panthers 7 Whitley Warriors 3, 25 January 1986. Scores despite the attentions of......well, can you name him? Panthers 14 Solihull Barons 10, 14 April 1984. Gav out-paces Chuck Taylor to bang it home.

And when he did score, he really enjoyed it. Panthers 7 Fife Flyers 6, 22 November 1986. Panthers 9 Murrayfield Racers 2, 9 February 1986. Gavin's hat-trick goal. Gav still lives in Nottingham and he is painter and decorator. He's been here a few years so you can tell what he's saying now. So if you need anything doing, give him a ring and spend some time reminiscing.

Number 18 near the top of the page is either a relative of Johan Molin or more probably, Jim Gauthier. I can remember Gauthier (playing for Altrincham) terrorising Dave Graham in the Solihull net with breakaway goal after breakaway goal presumably in the season after he played in Nottingham.

The thing that stands out most in my mind about Gavin was his rather rudimentary skating style. He tended to kind of run over the ice rather than skate. Perhaps I'm being a touch harsh, but that's the image I have of him.
Good update on the decorating - I thought he was running (get it?!) a chippy?

I saw him last summer. He was in his painter's overalls in a van full of decorating paraphernalia. Assume he's still doing that. I think he gave up the chippy a while ago. He also makes the occasional appearance in the pubs of Ruddington.

Bruce Sims would be so pleased he has had a mention! (in part) I used to work with him when he worked for the CHL in the mid 90's and he was always saying "do they still talk about me in England?" a great guy, with lots of great hockey stories about his time in Blackpool and Southampton. Last I heard he was working as a process server in Toronto. Thanks for sharing these great photos Stef

Sorry I've not put any more pictures on but the events of last week overshadowed everything else. Also, I have reached a point where I've got to have a bit of a sort out because my pics are all mixed up and I need to separate ones that I've posted from one's I've not. Here's one to be going on with for now, though, although I appreciate this will be hugely controversial with Sambo, featuring as it does a Panthers coach and an alcoholic beverage in the same frame. I should make it clear this is a post-game and not a pre-game photo.

re: Is it Johnny Ireland ? Do you mean John Iredale? It's actually Dave Ross, one of the most renowned hard men of the time. Until, that is, he came up against Paul Adey in a game up at Whitley. They had a fight and both got 5's, and us Panthers fans had the joy in those 5 minutes of watching Ross's eye swell up to the point that when he left the penalty box he had to leave the game with said eye completely shut.

I remember that photo of Damps, Stef. Wasn't it taken at the inter-squad night when they split the squad into four teams captained by TK, Jimmy Keyes, Fred Perlini and Damps? One of the teams (Fred's?) came out covered in black war paint! I think that was the last time I saw Damps on the ice and went away thinking he still could have played at that time - he put Jason Martin over the boards with a monster hip check.

It was indeed the inter-squad night, and here is Alex sans helmet in action, putting it about a bit, as they say. Note John Bremner behind him wearing shirt number 133 and Darryl Easson (no. 351!) on the floor.

This inter-squad night (15 February 1987) was a bit of a laugh in which the Panthers split themselves into three teams - Fred's (Perlini) Flyers, Jim's (Keyes) Hounds and Terry's (Kurtenbach) Terriers. They played a round robin series of 2x10 minute period games with the top two teams going through to a final in which Hounds beat Terriers 3-2. The evening was preceded by a Junior game featuring the youngsters on their way up through the Nottingham junior programme, 11 of whom went on to play for the Panthers and one of whom (Ashley Tait) is still playing at the top level today. The evening was the reason some Panthers players took to the ice looking like this (note Fred with the somewhat rudimentary captain's "K")..... .....and behaved like this (and no I don't know who that is going in the opposite direction to the rest of his team)..... It may amaze some of you young 'uns that several hundred people turned out (and paid) to watch what was basically the lads messing about for a couple of hours. A reminder of less anxious times when hockey was fun. Imagine the furore on here if they did something like that now. "I'm not paying to watch that", "Is it value for money", etc etc.

I remember that game. Three of us had a small wager on which team would win. I cant remember which one I had, but I didnt win.
The goal celebrations were entertaining, and a generally good night.

Sorry, I've been a bit tardy lately (been decorating). With play-offs upon us, a few pics from Wembley '89. You know, I've looked at this picture so many times and can't see what's caused Randall to fall over. Unless it's a dive of Lawless-esque proportions. Mike Rowe of Selmar-fist-to-chin-coincidence fame on the right.

Randall Weber and Jason Martin (the archetypal stay-at-home defenseman - what's he doing there?) buzz around a Whitley goal with hardly a defender in sight. The much missed Micky Curry on the line in the foreground, not a hair out of place. It's interesting to see Jason here. He was a very young kid at this time but Alex still threw him and others on in important games like this. Best way to learn, you see.

Panthers defend in numbers to thwart a Warrior attack L to R: Dave Graham in goal, Doc Durdle (partially hidden except for his head), Gavin Fraser (partially hidden), captain fantastic Terry Kurtenbach and Dwayne Keward on the right. Whitley attackers L to R: Hilton Ruggles, the brilliant Scotty Morrison and John Iredale. I remember when I first saw Hilton. So strong. Just used to skate through opponents, not round them. Scott Morrison was an unlikely looking hockey player. Short, a bit plump (sorry if you're reading this, Scott) but a top chap and fantastic stick handler. John Iredale was a top British player, rough and tough but very skilful. This line was mustard and in that season combined for 318 goals + 346 assists = 664 points in 47 matches, i.e. over 14 points a game. We've come a long way etc etc.

Players all over the ice. Hunty surveys the chaos, which he probably caused.
