Shuff and handing out shed loads of free tickets for the game against Phoenix on saturday to encourage people to come and watch 'em (they did it last season for the basingstke game and it was a mammoth snore in ;D). They are confidently prediciting a crowd of 7,000 + (2000 paying customers, 5000 freebies ). Gawd I can remember when they used to get 7000 paying customers for a game against manchester I would advise that if you go to the game, go for a wee before you go to the Arena, because you won't find a stall in the Arena during the game:( HL

Well to me that is bad business okay they will get a bit back from the food they sell and any merchandise but they will be losing money hand over fist , i used to know some one who works for the steelers and they said every seat they don't fill they have to pay 50p for every empty seat.

How is this bad business? If they're already paying for the empty seats then they might as well get someone sat in them for free in the hope that at the next game they turn up & pay.

LOL There is better ways of getting people into a game. eg, half Price tickets , buy one get 1 free . things like that at least they will still bring in some money instead of none

The last one failed IMO because they were complete newbies who went, this ticket set-up is actually been involving the local inline junior teams and other local organisations.
All for it if you ask me!!!

Anothere fantastic promotion by the Steelers. All local kids teams have been invited as have some ex ST holders who have not been back. There are a few that moan but most are fully supportive of this initiative, without new blood this sport will die; still at least you would win summat when you are the only team left eh? Oh, and I don't know who told you they pay for empty seats but that is utter rubbish, they are pulling your leg! Take it from someone who works there NOW, a flat rent is paid plus a cut of merchandise thats it.

I think its a great idea, even if half the tickets are freebies 7000 people at a game is better than 3000

Isn't this why Manchester went out of business though?? - I've got a free ticket for the V&A museum, I doubt I'll get hooked on going to museums, but I thought I'd expand my culture. Meaning free tickets don't always lead to future income. If you look at the stats, not many free tickets do. - If there's 7000 fans, who in their right mind will stand in queues for food? If they are skint, they probably can't afford the arena food either! - If they are newbies, why would they spend money on merchandise? They might buy a programme, but thats about it. Again, if they are skint, they probably can't afford it either! - All those people who were going to buy tickets, now dont have to. However, it depends on who the tickets go to... ie major sponsors can have 500 tickets, the local juniors can have 500, selected schools can have 500 tickets etc. If they are given generally, then the likes of you and me wouldn't hesitate on going to watch the Steelers lose!! - If they want the crowd to cheer them on (ie 12th man) this might help, but the newbies wont know the chants! All in all... why would they do this???

All in all... why would they do this??? To fill the place and encourage newbies!!! - as Paul said above - they've not turning away paying customers to get the seats for free tickets - they're already empty, so they've nothing to lose by giving away free tickets, and if just a few of those people come back again, then they've got a good result. If they don't get anyone come back again at least they've filled the place up more for that one night. It's a no lose situation surely?

It's a no lose situation surely? For example. If 1000 of those people, those people being ones who select their games, were planning on taking mates anyways etc got free tickets... then at say £15 a ticket (I don't know as I've never bought a ticket at Sheffield) then they've just lost out on £15,000. I doubt they'd recoup that money on food/merchandising. Yes they'll get bums on seats... thats great! My point is, if I got a free Forest ticket, I'd go once, but I wouldn't ever get hooked on Forest!! It would just be something different to do on a Saturday afternoon. At the end of the day there is NO guarantee of any of them coming back.

Not quite mate. It's good business sense. If the seats are going to be empty anyway, why not give the tickets away and earn from the food and drink that they will inevitably buy?

i dont think though that is the major thing here, to me it looks like they are just wanting a packed house for phoenix first match against the steelers in what 3 seasons now.
Either way the figures you are all mentioning are irelivant.
They already have the money in place to pay for the rental of the arena, they may get others who wouldnt normally come hooked they might not. Jeez stop bashing the fact they have decided to have a full house for once even if they are filled with freebie newbies. Who i might point out might not nessesarily be poor like you keep saying storm, they might just not usually go to sports events and thoguh hey free ticket lets give it a bash.
At the end of the day payed for or not, it's bums on seats, its a game of hockey and im pretty sure this is a direction the panthers would go if we didnt already have over double the attendance shuf have each home game. Football clubs, cricket and many other sports institutions do this sort of thing, so why not hockey!

I think he's probably estimating on around 4000, seeing as sheff seem to be only averaging 2000-2500 per game.

Last year av 3,904 Over 3k present for our only home game so far this year. In fact we have never averaged less than 3,500. (The official stats show 3,800 and something, but this is with the London games removed. The figure I have quoted is all teams, all competitions)

Better than doing nothing, its one game wiped off where theyre not going to make much money. Think of the 1000s of people who would normally sit at home, they dont pay anything into the steeler bank, if you go to a free game you might buy merchandise, food, carpark etc.
Then think if 500 people go the week after (perfectly acheivable) then thats 5k+ back already and it builds up.
They wudnt do it if they didnt know what they were doing, its promoting the sport so im all for it. I can see the downsides dont get me wrong but I went to the game last season where they did it and it was great, even as a panthers fan I was happy to see so many people watching a game of UK hockey. Plus when we did the kids for a quid or whatever it was vs basingstoke that worked well. They are big arenas, the owners probably want to make more use of them instead of seeing empty arenas. Plus it makes the numbers look better at the end of the season ie panthers go to gmb with a higher average attendance and can boast more exposure
Plus this season with the tough guys in the league, lets face it people are more likely to come back

This is a petty attack on an attempt to get more people to watch ice hockey.
It is beneath you HL, I had come to seek out your posts and respect and learn from their content.
Still, you will probably change your view next time we talk at the Steelers.

I think that as a short term thing this is good , But if you keep doing it then the paying Fans will take exception to it .
another thing I would point out is , just becuase someone stuffs a free ticket in youre hand will not mean that person will be attending , you can give out 3500 tickets free but a percentage of that will just forget about the game or not attend .
There was a joke going around about Notts county it went like this . Meadow Lane is a dangerous place to go at night , Poeple have been mugged and a season ticket stuffed in their pockets . Maybe we should change the Meadow Lane to Hallam arena ?
