no the officals are taking ZT as ZC (Zero Contact).... you land a big hit... its called. I thought we had introduced ZT to make the game faster and allow bigger hits? The way they are calling it NOW (inconsistent ref to ref, even period to period) is a joke and im not suprised if it puts people off. Teddy C, that's what I was talking about! For the record, at last nights War of the Roses match, the number of penalties were vastly reduced from what we saw the first couple of weeks, especially the Steelers seem to have Lent what draws penalties, Manchester spent almost the entire 1st period killing penalties, they'll learn. The game had a much greater flow to it this week, it was a great game to have so many new fans at, 8 goals, 5 fights, the correct result. It was like going back in time 10 years. This time last year a similar promotion ran against Basingstoke, in comparison that game was a snore-fest. Last night was a great advert for our game. I can't wait to see the Steelers - Panthers rivalry re-ignited this year; some of the games last season were hard to watch, can't see it being that way this year. ;D

Well looks like the Steelers tactics didn't work very well.... Steelers had a good crowd, but no where near sell out. The hot tub was kinda full though, won't post pics of it mind . Comedy moment of the night was the guy getting in at the start of the match was getting wolf whistled and he was trying to pose and fell over while getting in. Dork! ;D

I always assumed Shuff always near full do the team, building etc. I guess it did work in that case then.

Come on Heanor Lair & Jono72 - What was the 'Newbie' crowd reaction like from where you were sat? It wasn't a bad atmosphere at all. To be honest the game had everything a new fan would want, lot's of goals & lot's of fights. Speaking personally I found the game quite boring by the 3rd as it was so one sided, Phoenix just didn't turn up and were made to pay. Offensively Manchester look poor but Sheffield need to do something about their defence because giving up 2 short handed goals on the same PP is unforgivable!

What, like shutting out 8 minutes of 5 on 3? I'll take that thanx. The shorthanders were howlers but we were tight for the rest of the night.

Attendance was 6965 which is somewhat dissappointing considering the shed load of tickets that were handed out as freebies. If Shuff cant fill out the tin shed on freebies, I do wonder if the crowds will ever come back What will be the attendance for the next home game..back well below 4000 I would suggest. HL

HL Have you read the begining of the thread? Our average is just shy of 4k yours is just over that, there is only a couple of hundred in it. Do you know how many tickets were handed out? I do, and the take up was about 70% - job done. Tim, Don't bring logic and reasoning into this conversation please, I have no answer to it LOL. Look oppinions vary obviously, somone on your game thread said that it was not the same team you played last week, that's their oppinion. On the way out I was chatting to a Pheonix fan who was dissapointed at the result but said "If only we had played like that last week, we would have stuffed em!" We all see it differently eh?

I imagine they did get a bit of a telling off in the 1st break after those 2 goals on that PP. I started getting confused in the 3rd with all the stacked penalties though, I was like why's he still in and oh it was all too much. Simms said "for those new who are wondering whats going on" and I said "I don't even know what the hell is going on" lol. Anyway will be back later to add more but gotta go ;D

Tickets were given away to sponsors and community groups with the aim of getting a crowd of 7000. The crowd was 6965. Please don't let the facts get in the way will ya.

Whats the significance of 7000?, why not give out enough tickets for a 9000 attendence? It wouldnt happen to be the fact that no other arena accomodates more than 7000 so Sheffield can claim to have had the biggest attendance of the season; having patted themselves on the back for last season when 4000+ free tickets ensured an attendance of 7012 for the Basingstoke game. All good PR I grant you, but last seasons average attendance at Shuff for 'non-freebie' games was below the average attendance of the season before, which incidentally was lower than the previous season before that..... Perhaps they see it different in the EPL - I thought the ref in the Lions - Redwings game tonight called a good game - allowed plenty of physical contact but called the interference penalties. ZT was always going to be painful for the first part of the season - even the NHL took 6 weeks to adapt with all their resources. The end result should be worth the wait though.

Why does it even matter? Are you that insecure about your achievments over recent years you have to cling to the fact you get the biggest crowds? Look, you have good, solid support; we don't. They are trying to get a new generation interested in the sport - whats the problem? And why do you care? Do you want me to say we need to do stuff like this cos most of our fan base are fickle and only come when we are winning? Fine, I could have told you that 7 years ago! Ever thought that is why we fight like hell to be successful? Cos without the success we would be dead in the water with the few 'come what mayers' like me. All attempts to recruite new fans should be applauded, bet you won't moan when a couple of hundred who got freebies last night but live closer to you turn up at your door eh? What you gonna do turn them away? Oh no, no, no we don't do that kind of stuff, we have tradition y'know!

It wouldnt happen to be the fact that... ...they would have needed the extra seating at an already full stage-end (hot tub and cheerleaders this week). Either that or they may have had to turn away some walk up paying fans if they gave away too many freebies? Who knew how many fans the Roses game would attract, it has been a while, who knows how many Phoenix fans there are anyway, given they haven't had a proper 'home' game yet? So many unknowns.

I find it unbelievable that this thread has made 5 pages. So the Steelers gave out some freebies to attract some new fans, fair play to them, why not, it's not like they're giving the arena away for nowt. Sorry chaps, but having let this thread flow for the past couple of days I've come to the conclusion that it's just another way to try and have a dig at the size of the Steelers fanbase.

Its easy to have a big fan base when you give out 4 thousand free tickets though, but I am with you in the fact that this thread is pointless. Who cares??

We haven't, and thats why they do this, in the hopes of getting it back! We are no where close to being as solid fan wise to you lot. This helps, but it will take quite some time to re-win the trust of the many who left after the 'he who must never be mentioned' episode and of course good old NL!

Dead right. As a Panther from mansfield I encourage people to watch hockey. I work in north Notts with people from Notts, Derbyshire and S. Yorks and contacts etc in W. Mids and Lancs/merseyside. Sure I would prefer these people to wear black and gold but IMO it is equally good that they watch/support the team that is nearest/preferred by themselves. If that means Blaze, Phoenix, Steelers, Peterborough, Telford etc getting a few more fans ....SO WHAT!! Without fans, any club will disappear that is where the term "supporters" comes from. It is not too long ago when we had a SUPERleague(sic) with FIVE teams in it!! We do not want to go down that road again.
If clubs want to increase financial support they look for sponsors. Who will sponsor the team if there are only a few people seeing the advert? So you need more people to watch, more fans.
So chuck in a few promotions/freebies/cheapies to get more people interested, hopefully more fans, more sponsors, bigger crowds, better atmosphere, more people.....ad infinitum.
Would it not be better if the NIC had 5500 for every home game... not just when steelers are in town
I'd like to think with increased interest in this fantastic sport that we will have a 12 or 14 team league in the next few years.

Freshers week was last week for Sheff U. I know this because my brother started his course yesterday, and my neighbours son went down there over a week ago too. Don't know about Hallam though.

Very sensible business move by the SS. Worth noting that Panthers have given free tickets away on plenty of occasions too.
As for mocking Steelers attendances,
not only is that one-eyed nonesense it also takes no account of the fact that Panthers only get a few hundred more fans in then they do. Add 3000 seats into the NIC and boy would that place look empty too.
