Fascinating debate boys...if I was a mod I'd slap both your legs. (Both of you I mean...)
meanwhile back on track - I've seen all of the Wire season 1 - it's great, def worth watching and it's only 13 episodes - sometimes I find US series can go on waaaay too long.
You have to stick with it, can be a bit hard going sometimes, but is really well written I thought - love the Barkstone gang characters and the cops.
You can't really afford to miss an episode - which is not easy when the beeb are showing episodes every night. This probably means I won't get to watch any of the other series on TV as I can't watch/record an hour every night relentlessly - I'll always be playing catch up.
Watched the 1st episode of the Mentalist last night - thought it was ok, reminded me of Dexter (which I ditched after 1 season). Anyone else see it? Is it worth sticking with?

Only seen eps 2 and 3 (it's not on iPlayer, damn, guess it's a rights thing), impressed enough so far I've bagged the DVD for series 1. Like Fraggle says I'm bound to miss a few eps with it on when it is night after night, and having missed ep1 I'm still not entirely sure what's going on ;D DVDs the way to go for me. Only slight negative is the British guy's, errm, "variable" accent

Not seen it Fraggle, saw the trailer and read a bit about it, kinda sounded like an un-funny version of Psych, which put me off a bit.

yotes, glad you are enjoying it, i just watched episode 4 which has the infamous 'fcuk' scene it. clever police work in that scene. Dominic wests accent isnt too bad i dont feel, McNulty is one of the casts most valuable assets, along with Stringer Bell, a south london boy, though not that you would have the first clue that he was british with an accent like his. he was recently in Rocknrolla. man, his accent is convincing.
like fraggle said, its only 13 episodes, but stick with it, the later seasons are top notch quality.

I've series linked The Wire. It is considered by many to be one of the finest tv shows ever. I saw The Mentalist and enjoyed it a lot. I gather it warrants it's #1 status in America. BTW - Life on Mars USA has been axed. As has been Dirty Sexy Money. Prison Break returns in a couple of weeks.

Series 3 of Dexter. 24th April on FX! WOO HOO!! Seen it. It's good. Starting to get a bit samey though. Well the first 2 series (which were awesome) are based on a book...........however the TV station comissioned another 3 series so they basically have to write it themselves so it apparently goes downhill abit.

I wouldn't say it's gone down hill. I think it's just as good as it's always been. It's just that it's not fresh any more and it's getting to be more of the same again - a bit like 24 is but nowhere near as severely (currently half way through 24 season 5).

The first two were loosely based on a couple of books, there are more but i've only read the first two. It was a cracking series though, a good and logical angle to take the series.

if you come at the king, you best not miss. Haha, you been watching the Wire? Speaking of the Wire - watched the first 3 episodes, 4 and 5 to come tonight. I like it - it's my kinda program - although it's not as high paced and rough and tough as the Shield. Looking forward to more of it

Looking forward to more of it come on man, ive been pimping that show for as long as ive been posting here. pshh. stick with the show, its more street level and believable than the shield. as much as i love the shield, it was a bit over the top, the wire on the otherhand, is quite charming in it's realism. the cheese stands alone...

yotes, you've done the best thing by ordering the boxset. since i missed the first episode on monday, ive watched 12 episodes in under a day. just waiting to do the last episode of season 1 and then i'll be moving on to season 2.
you know, after watching it through already, it all seems to blur into one long season. theres bits i remember, and bits i forgot, but it still stands up and remains awesome, even after the 7 years that have passed. it doesnt look dated and it still feels incredibly real.
s'all in the game, yo.

Mackey goes without saying, though i meant the portrayal of the street. too much glamour. i see the wire as being the opposite to that.

as none of us live in baltimore how the hell can you judge that, or is it your stereotype of what the street is, just like a modern day mythology was the wild west really like the place John Wayne inhabited then!
so is everyone in downtown baltimore either a user a pusher or a victim?

im fully capable of answering the question, i just chose not to. the wire doesnt depict every citezen of the west baltimore projects as a gang banger or a drug slinger or a victim. though i never claimed that. using the two shows and comparing them to one another i think that the wire is more realistic to what my knowledge (limited knowledge at best) is how it is down on the streets.
having watched countless interviews with real 'homies' from where the show was filmed, i have come to the conclusion that it is a pretty close and accurate reprisentation of how the streets are over there. i figure this by taking into account that david simon, the shows creator, was a journalist who shadowed the baltimore pd for a year and based his other project, 'homicide: life on the streets' and another of his projects called 'the corner' are from first hand experiences of what he saw.
in this messageboard users intellectual opinion, i'd say that from all the background knowledge simon has on the streets and the police, and all the evidence that the homies that have been interviewed have corroberated, i think it's pretty realistic, and based against the shield? i'd say it was more realistic than that show.
