for 'snow plough' read 'rumour mill'.
I would hate to see Shmyr lining up against us, it would not be right. If we let Ryan go to another elite league club, we'd better have one hell of an enforcer to replace him.

Its one thing losing him, its another him going to a rival club and us not having a replacement lined up. Maybe we could have Curtis Bowen and Brandin Cote as our team toughness again instead

Again I agree Rich and Panther D man.
Shmyr came here with a big reputation, and has openly been kept "on a leash" by Ellis. If he were to go to another club, and that coach let him be his old self... It could be bad news all round.
Should he be a panther? I would like to see him here, but only if he is paid what he's worth not being paid silly money. But that is difficult to say, Perhaps Ryan doesn't like being on a leash, so will charge less if he is in control of his fights / actions.
Without knowing the finite details fo Corey's game plan, corey's ear marked players, other offers players are receiving we can only guess.

my first reaction was 'oh no' when i saw this thread, but i'll explain the meaning behind the reaction...
first i saw the forums index, in which i saw an updated transfers thread in talk hockey and a ryan shmyr thread in here. i thought he'd gone. personally i dont think a team can survive on team toughness, they need enforcers, and enforcers that are free to do their job. keep shmyr here, at least for one more season under the reign of a new coach to see how he fares.

Being an import down on 60% of the league and without the high-end Brits already secured by our rivals among the other 40%, I don't personally think we can afford to have a hockey player as ordinary as Shmyr on our roster in '08/9.

I'd love to see Shmyr sign for another team because if he did I'd have no doubt he'd come back to the NIC and shut you all up by running the shop, especially if we go the way of the legendary team toughness ethic

Shmyr strikes me as the sort of player who if allowed to by his coach could really be nasty to face. If he was picked up by Cardiff, Coventry, Belfast or Newcastle could be bad news all round and he could regain his tough reputation
Hes not scared of going off face offs and doesnt need a reason (see 6 fights in 6 games at the start of the season). get a coach to tell him 'go fight him' and he will.
None of this 'your not allowed to fight infront of a packed home crowd against local 'rivals' despite being offered out'

I agree Teddy.
Makes me laugh how people slag him off but a guy that does that for his team despite him probably feeling pretty embarrassed it is the kind of spirit I'd want

Makes me laugh how people slag him off but a guy that does that for his team despite him probably feeling pretty embarrassed it is the kind of spirit I'd want Have you not seen how his fights pan out though? a) only fights goons; b) only by invitation - never instigation; c) rarely wins - ending a fight is not the same as winning it. Mix this up with his skills as a hockey player and you're looking at an 11th import.

to no9, i guess you missed him 'escorting' Finnerty off the ice, when he was kicking off against wally? Offering the whole sheffield bench after he scored in sheffield and going virtually undefeated, the first season he was immense. it must have taken a lot of character not to go when told to play for the team. he's filled in on D and done well, i believe he won team spirit award first season too. IMO he deserves a 3rd season, let off the leash.

Shmyr fights by the code, he's not going to fist fight a small guy. he did however ram some bison players head into the glass, will that do you?
