He's training with us just to keep fit because his season has finished, because of the deadline, he can't sign for anyone this year but i wouldn't be suprised if we see him in a panthers shirt next year, possibly replacing richardson.

Good comment Spike, and I hope you are right about him coming back next season. What adds weight to your comment is the fact of a game issued play off shirt with his name on it, quite a puzzle that. Why was it issued then not worn, think I read else where, that he was going to sign for the play offs, but it fell through for some reason. We will possibly never know.

Who wouldn't want to see Clarkey back in a Panthers shirt? His last season for us was great to watch. It was my first season down and he seemed to score in every game i went to. Not many players in a Panthers shirt from this season could do that

I think the only problem with clarkey is, he can go through a long spell without scoring and doesn't seem to pick up the pace as much as he should.

My order of preference for our "top brit " 1. Greg owen 2. David clarke 3. Mark richardson I don't think there are any more out there that'd be right for us.

Theres room for both id say. People comparing Richardsons wage to Clarkies are way off the mark.

Damn thats another one gone then, so imho that just leaves a single import quality brit left to sign ie Clarky and if we dont get his signature then that leaves the panthers for yet another year without the key brit that can swing a game for us....
Can see the league slipping away and we havent started the season yet... and they tell me its not about the money, right.....

Whats this obsession with a top end Brit? It would be great to have one but if were actually sticking to the cap then all its going to do is dilute the quality of our remaining imports. Chances are were going with six import forwards so that means we can have two import lines which is fine, baring in mind top Brits are generally on more money than imports of the same quality I can't really see why it's essential we get one unless were using one of our import forward slots on a third line enforcer or going with six d-men. If so a top line Brit would be useful but not imo essential enough to go all doom and gloom saying we've lost the title three months before we've even seen a puck.

bacause Nick apart from the challenge cup every team that has won a major trophy over the last 3 years has had at least one.... kinda makes my point dont you think...
And when those injuries bite you need the brits to step up and fill those import slots or to make all 3 lines bite...

Do you really think this sticking to the cap is nothing more than a smokescreen to appease the fans of clubs that dont want to spend the money?...
Jeez according to the rumours both cov and sheff spent big time to get their top end brits in do you think they skimped on their other brits/imports?... they hardly "diluted" their imports and today on top of ALL the quality brits cov have signed so far i hear they have signed a 1st round draft pick, no dilution there as far as i can see, just making sure he has strength in depth...... again....

you need a top quality brit as otherwise you are going to be basically down a import when playing teams like coventry and sheffield, and if you get an injury your in double trouble

I'm assuming were sticking to the cap and in that case there is no reason to need a top Brit. If were "obviously" not sticking to the cap seems we are the richest club apparently by far why don't we just blow everyone out the water and fill our team with top end ECHLer's and AHLer's, far easier and much more entertaining than spending a small fortune on a Brit that will be amazing half of the season and invisible the next

Good debate from both sides. I agree with Bramley that if we spending big money on a guy we want him to be there every shift making things happen but also if we can sign Clarke for reasonable money id love to see him back.
Tex,
Look at it this way.
Say Clarke is on 900 a week, Richardson on 500
then say Carlson wants 900 to come to us, Shmyr wants 500 to come back.
Would you rather have Carlson and Richardson or Clarke and Shmyr? Id rather have Clarke and Shmyr anyway, but thats the debate Neilson has got to have!

Rich, I can see what both you and Bramley are saying, however my perception of what is happening right now in british ice hockey is that the teams that win cups/trophies are the ones who have that strength in depth with the signing of at least one import quality brit, no matter how much he costs (and i am sure you have all heard the rumours as to how much both sheff and cov are paying tait and weaver). Now if we had seen a drop in the quality of the imports or even other british players because of paying these top end brits on these teams (ie cornish or some bench warmer) then to some extend it makes you question their use, however on both the sheff team at the end of last season and throughout with cov i saw no discernable difference between the quality of panthers imports (who didnt have an import quality brit) and both those teams, in fact some think that the imports on cov's team in particular was especially good for our league. IN England we are not going to get that amazing player, we just cant afford him and he wont want to play here anyway, but looking at what is available it does not seem to matter how much is paid for the brits as there doesnt seem to be any correlation on the higher spending teams between signing the better brits and getting lower quality imports. Given that, i as a panthers fans would rather our team signed the best brits than one of our competitors and then enter the rat race that is signing the best imports in the knowledge that we have one already and havent had to trawl the lower leagues in the USA/Canada for him wouldnt you?...
