If it’s best day are behind it and it’s no longer viable then why is Neil Balck and every other owner not looking to sell their club? How many times has hockey been reborn in this country? It's like Groundhog Day with a different name attached. Either it will always be a hand to mouth existence, teetering on the edge, or the myriad owners are not capable of developing a workable framework. One of the biggest issues is the disparity between teams, the haves and have nots. As we are finding out watching a losing team isn't a bag of fun. Essentially the rink teams are always behind the eight ball, financially unable to compete. Their crowd numbers drop, reducing their spending power further and in many cases they then fold or drop down to the minor leagues. Newcastle Vipers, Milton Keynes Lightning, Hull Stingrays, Manchester Phoenix, London Racers and Edinburgh Capitals all gone from the EIHL. They didn't find it viable and as far as I can see the owners haven't come up with any plan to try and level the playing field. The elite league is the longest running top flight setup that British ice hockey has seen though. I do agree that more has to be done to create a level playing field to help the smaller teams grow. Implementing a wage cap is the correct way to go, it will bring parity and gives every team a chance of competing, that is in everybody’s interest. There are problems that run much deeper than the structure of the EIHL that has led to the teams you mention failing. Ultimately the infrastructure isn’t in place in the UK, in a lot of the cases the rinks aren’t at a standard that helps them succeed. Combine that with a lack of money coming intro the sport, partly due to the fact that governance of the sport is a mess, then teams aren’t going have the money available to grow if crowds are down.

The only options are either a business man with a lot of money who will want to make money out of the club, like Black is doing now. A person or group of people like in Cardiff, that love the game. Those are the only options. But you can’t buy something that isn’t for sale. Everything has its price.. how many football teams say player X is not for sale only for him to be sold weeks later

I did hear that GM was invaluable to NB because he made him money. But then GM would complain that he was always on to him to find more ways to make him more money and what corners could be cut. At one stage the players hadn't got decent fitness training facilities and some were relying on a favour of a nearby small operator to maintain their fitness.

Infrastructure, organization, too many owners that know more about ice hockey than they know about business, not enough sustainable rinks and the bottom line is not enough paying customers interested. The EIHL started about 19 years ago? And still not enough bums on seats.

Well, sacking the coach will be a nice shiny thing to divert from this subject for a while.

Nail on the head, look at what Barry Hearn has done for darts and to a lesser degree snooker since taking them under the Matchroom banner.

Been thinking about the history of the Panthers ownership/custodians and ive realised that I know nothing before Neil Black took over. How has the management of the club evolved since 1980? there must be a few on here who know the timeline. My money is on Spik.

The new media /PR guy will wish he’d never left Boots when he’s seen how this outfit operate. i’ll give him a year no one lasts much longer than that.

Basically estate agent Charles Walker was the first owner till Neil Black came in. Got a bargain if you ask me. I recall manager Gary Keyward saying when they started back up in 1980, the old rink said you can take on the cost by yourselves or hiring the rink out. Obviously massive crowds came and the club wished they had taken it all on themselves.

Rudderless. All the money is going one way I guess Doucet is meant to be the rudder. That Blacky did his usual and signed the easiest (cheapest) option of some unemployed old boy with zero experience in the role rather ruined the plan, but I can see what they were aiming for.

I think the rudder is firmly pointed towards the Caribean

I bet someone has all the answers like when we became a plc etc..etc...

If I had the Photoshop skills The Flying Shirt I'd definitely tweak that to read: "Panthers of the Caribbean - The Curse of Neil Black" with the appropriate face changes of cast members.
