This has already been covered in another thread Must have missed the thread... still absolutley shocked... can’t see what he can possibly offer to Cherno.. although someone at the arena said that Cherno had no choice with the Assistant coach and his hand was forced.. not sure how true, but it’s absolutely bizarre that someone like Dan Green would be installed as Assist coach... |

Neil Black wanted two assistant coaches and that is in the loosest sense of the word is what he's got...
He wanted David Clarke to be 1 the 3 man coaching team until Clarke decoded it wasn't the right fit for him at this time.
Rich Chernomaz apparently did have his own assistant in mind to bring to Panthers with him but he couldn't come over due to prior commmitments back home.

The most bizarre thing I have ever seen. Bit like making Kate Price assistant England coach. He represents everything wrong with the Panthers over the last few years. Way too matey with the players (just like Neilson) and utterly useless at his initial job. Nice guy (just like Neilson again) and to me it looks like a post created to keep someone happy rather than a serious project. All the crap spoken about his lack of ice time over the years (another ice age wouldn’t have helped) will come home to roost now as he has had more bench time than anyone else in the history of UK hockey.

Every company/organisation has that person who they keep on even though they are useless at every job , instead of moving them through the door they move them sideways they are the ones who have jobs made up for them just to keep the peace .. Dan Green is that person!

Nobody here actually knows Green on a personal or professional level (I assume) so whilst the natural assumption is that he doesn't particularly know much, considering how poor a goaltender he was, it isn't always the best players who make the good coaches. It's not as if he's on the bench making big decisions or ultimately deciding how the team plays, he's another set of eyes, another opinion for Chernomaz to discuss and consult with. While Rich and Strax focus on the skaters during training, Green can work with Garnett and Gospel. He might not have been a good goalie but he knows the type of training that is needed to keep goalies in shape.
Personally, from talking to Green a few times it comes across like he is a real smart guy, analyses the game pretty well too so in my opinion I don't see any issue with him as one of the two assistant coaches. Everybody has to start somewhere and just because the physical ability wasn't there for him, it doesn't mean the mental ability required in being an assistant isn't. He can sit with Rich and Strax, break down other teams' games. There's all sorts he can assist with.
Lay off the guy for Christ sakes. If Rich didn't want him to be on the bench, he wouldn't be there and he'd be doing nothing but the housing related stuff and match night commentary. There are many, many coaches out there who never played at a high level, or never even played the game at all, yet still made great coaches. Whilst some true legends of the game were simply not good coaches.

Green isn't working objectively with the goaltenders. He's an assistant to Rich, as such.
If any of you have ever seen either the British or American versions of The Office you will understand 'Assistant to the Manager' as opposed to 'Assistant Manager'.

I agree with jord, in effect he is more likely an assistant to the coach. We also have Strachen.

Course it’s jobs for the boys. The only reason they invented a couple of jobs for Greener is because he’s Mitch Stevenson’s son in law and Panthers want to keep on the right side of him. |
