What coach thinks it's acceptable for a PROFESSIONAL sportsman to smoke? Buy him some nicorette and tell him to stop or get lost. If you want a calm Lawrence whose ready to play then you'll allow him to smoke, everyone knows he's pretty much one of a kind and has the nickname 'loon' so I'd assume the smoking is his way of keeping his head level and calm. Isn't something he's just picked up recently either, and smoking is something a lot of players will do from time to time. What a load of horse crap. We must allow him to smoke to keep him tame?! He's a hockey player who can be good when he turns up in a middling league. He's not a major star player. If he has such a stability problem that he needs to smoke then he shouldn't have been re-signed. It's so unprofessional.

If Lawrence was professional, applied himself and had the desire to win of Bruce Richardson he'd be nowhere near our league. He's clearly talented and has a hell of a shot. For Shultz I pity him, highly skilled and great scorer just made of glass. We seem to get players in who could do so much more than they do. They can both go for me. Get some players in who have proven stats from a full season of hockey

People with ADHD often use cannabis to deal with their problems, is that 'unprofessional'? So by your reckoning, players like McGrattan and countless other NHL/Former NHL'ers who took to alcohol and drugs during their troubles, despite being fan favourites, they should've been thrown out in the cold and told 'you're unprofessional you bum, out'??

This is a ridiculous argument for two reasons... 1. the days when the NHL had players with those problems are long gone with all the regular drug testing and monitoring food intake etc. The players are too big an investment for the clubs not to have conditioning coaches, dietary specialists hell even psychologists the days of theo fleury are in the past there is no reason to at least not try to emulate those. 2. Also when the league was seen more as a beer league the two most professional players we have had did not snack on a burger let alone drink alcohol and it comes as no surprise that both were seen to play well past the time most others had retired.... and those players.... yep, kelland and adey...

They're not as far gone as you may think. www.thehockeynews.com/news/article/devin-setoguchi-rises-from-rock-bottom-to-earn-another-shot-at-the-nhlPlayers are allowed free time, away from the spotlight and not everything is monitored. Drugs, yes. Diet is under each players' control unless they seek assistance. Players go through tough times off of the ice, whether it be family problems, stress or mental illness such as depression, alcohol has frequently been the answer to these players and will continue to be. It will always be something that occurs and I would bet a lot of money that there will be multiple players in the EIHL who have either previously battled something, or currently are. It takes merely 1 Concussion for someone's life to change and for them to hit rock bottom. Most players will suffer a concussion at some point in their careers. Hockey back in Adey's day was tougher than it is now, like Corey said in the NP Interview, players today don't push themselves half as much because people will see it as 'killing themselves' or something they aren't contractually obliged to do so no bother doing it. It sucks.

We certainly seem to have some problem players this year - even Wiikman heads for the bench when his stats are threatened. However maybe the problem lies more with an organisation that lets these players get away with it. Can you imagine what Paul Thompson's reaction would be!!!
Either Corey is too much Mr. Nice Guy, or our contracts are draughted so poorly that the players are given carte blanche to carry on as they like with no fear of penalties or dismissal. I'm all for giving players a second chance - when they are fit/sober, but we cannot afford to be a rehab clinic or recuperation ward.
Although I've been watching hockey for 25 years I must admit I'm not au fait with some of the sporting terms and had to google "franchise player" which someone mentioned earlier to find an exact definition.
According to Wikipedia "a franchise player is an athlete who is not simply the best player on their team, but a player that the team can build their "franchise" (team) around for the foreseeable future"
I laughed til the tears ran down my leg!

This whole argument in favour of Lawrence being allowed a special dispensation to regularly drink and smoke is as ludicrous as the 'Carter is too heavy to play well' argument.
Drink slows your reaction time. Cigarettes have a weakening effect on your lungs.
Cannabis, seeing as that's mentioned, is a banned substance. Found taking it and your outta here.
Whatever you think the 'positive' effects it all has on Lawrence, he isn't doing that well off it!
He is the key offensive component, relied on too heavily, in a failing team.
He's not lighting up the league with his offense, his defensive game is weak and he sat out 8 off 33 league games (24% - moving over 25% if he misses today).
25% of his league goals also came in 1 game.
If he relies on drugs to keep himself functioning, he should not be playing professional sport. He should be seeking help!

I have zero sympathy for Neilson with regard to those 2 players He knew exactly what he was signing! Schultz missed most of last season and is known as injury prone player. Lawrence has more baggage than Heathrow Airport on a Bank Holiday.
Corey knew what he was getting

So are we the only club who have players that smoke?
I'm not suggesting its a good thing, or that they should, but I bet there are plenty.
Anyone remember Marty Dallman?

Although I think anyone who is under a certain age and has taken up smoking is a bit of a dullard (there are cheaper and less painful ways to do yourself in), I'd be more concerned with the drinking culture that appears to be firmly in place at the club.
Another reason we should put more effort into their physical conditioning.

Use of cannabis - considering it is illegal in the UK then yeh it would be unprofessional for a player to use it considering the potential consequences. An athlete smoking is unprofessional. That is a habit that damages your lungs thus will and does have an impact on cardio fitness. During their troubles they should have been offered support. However I said "he shouldn't have been re-signed", not he "should've been thrown out". I stick with that. He should not have been re-signed if he is so unstable that smoking is so incredibly important as you seem to be making out.

All i'm trying to get across is that players aren't absolute machines who feel no emotion, face no issues. If smoking helps the guy, it helps him, sure it isn't good for his health but that's his decision. It's not a big problem, a lot of players around the league smoke and a lot of 'professionals' in all sports will have their tendencies to smoke or drink a problem away. If it's bad for a 'professional' sportsman to smoke, then why isn't it bad for say, a Police Officer to smoke? They're a professional and it could effect how they perform. You have people in high stress occupations, squeezing a stress ball isn't going to do much. It's a personal choice, and one which doesn't need to made a meal out of. He doesn't chainsmoke before, between and after games.

Smoking (cigarettes) is far from ideal for a sportsman but smoking doesnt intoxicate as alcohol does...... Why then was a certain player (who wasnt injured) in a bar in the early hours of the morning doing his best George Best impression when that very evening the club had an away game....which they went on to lose 3-1. Even thugh one man doesnt make a team, im glad I didnt waste my money watching that particular match. Not only that certain club officoals also KNEW he was too. What sort of example does that set to a young player like Betteridge or players in the squad who take their fitness seriously knowing the club they play for encourages or at very least turns a blind eye to the drinking culture which has a stranglehold on this club. Something which Neilson is too weak to stop.

They have affiliations with Loughborough uni, why aren't we using their sport science facilities to run proper tests on our players? I can guarantee their undergrad sports and exercise science students would love to run blood testing, lactate testing etc on professional sportsman. I'd have jumped at the chance when I was a student. We'd have a much better understanding of player condition by doing this, and if Lawrence is forever puffing away on a cigarette or 6 beers deep we'd know what effect it's having.

Players like Lawrence and MacMillan, who I think are also roomies, love their alcohol. Those two are the worst out of the entire team. I know Brad Moran likes a beer but he's got responsibilities so just has the one or two post game. Agree though, it's not a good example for players like Ollie who is busting a gut to keep his place on the team and for any other British kids who are on their way up. Shudra and Kirk especially, wouldn't be good to see Desbiens and co. at Sheffield light up any cigars and drink like fish again if those two are around.

I once sat next to a couple of teenagers at a game who spoke to each other in hashtags, actually saying the word each time. Was very odd, and not remotely how I'd pictured Iggy looking.
