GB win the hockey game 6-5 but I don't think they could have defended much worse for 60 mins if they tried ! Got to play better on Saturday

Not the best performance, but they got the win.
Serbia looked poor so difficult to see how good Italy were.
Not as big a crowd as I thought there would be, but plenty of GB fans there, and quite a few from Panthers.
It's bloomin cold in the arena.
Cortina is a nice place though.

Serbia had 4 shots on goal all game!! That's shockingly bad.
Thought GB looked good in patches but defensively poor throughout. This will only get better as the tournament goes on and the players get more game time with each other. It must always be difficult to get into the rhythm straight away at these tournaments on a couple of hours training together.
I'm expecting that tomorrow will be pretty comfortable and Sunday will be the true test.

Didn't think Stevie & Swindlehurst had a great game at all yesterday...but then again neither did the rest of the D. Bowns gave up a couple of soft ones.
Didn't see Oakford getting any ice time.
But a win's a win. That's all that matters.

Hopefully the Netherlands can give it a good close game, making Italy work for the 60minutes, whilst we close our game out early on and conserve energy levels for Italy the following day. Good theory

Cortina is a nice place though. Scenery certainly looks pretty impressive:

A bit better from GB yesterday, but to be expected against weaker opposition.
Serbias first goal went through Lyles legs from distance and the second was on an extended five on three powerplay.
More ice time for Oakford tonight.
Netherlands pushed Italians hard and were unlucky with the first goal when the ref had blown his whistle before the puck went in
Will be very tough tonight, and hope it's not spoiled by the officials.

IIHF have emailed me back to say they will change the details on their website as Colin Shields is not (as mentioned in Italy) the 2nd all-time goal scorer for GB. The true picture in all time is Gerry Davey on 43 from 45 games then Tony Hand on 40 and Shields on 34 presently. Shields is the 2nd best scorer in the MODERN ERA ( as the website now says)...
Hope he pops a few more in later today to chase those two above him.

What is it about refs in Italy?

Knew the Italians would be better opposition to crack but two PP goals on a 4 minute shorthanded play for us then another goal has rather put a hill in front of us now.

I know the point you are making. Panthers in Italy. Unfortunatly GB always seem to get a rough ride from Euro refs. Think we have a certain reputation and get called because of it.

If this was the level of officiating we had in our league I would seriously contemplate not watching ice hockey, watching it makes me glad we have our officials and that says a lot

It's a shame, some very odd penalty calls (Lee charging, Myers slashing etc), and even things like whistling it dead for a man in the crease when there was no one near it. I dunno whether the refs are dodgy, or just over-officious.
