I think it started from the storm game. A panthers fan was streaming it and it was all over twitter that they were doing it. I saw it retweeted a few times that night. I think Jono explained at the time that they'd asked the Storm GM if it was OK to stream as there was no webcast, but then the owner asked them to stop.

Got to protect those image rights and of course, if a bloke with a phone can stream a game it kicks the feet out a little of the Panthers' arguements about 'technical reasons' being a hurdle preventing streams at the NIC.

Got official clips of games on our Fixtures thread.Which I assume is ok as they are just rehash of the same they put into social media. So this is about whole game copy? Why would total game copy be needed after the game has been done? Is it really a big problem.? All I recall is that those who bleat about copyright have no worries on using others material at times.

OK instead, I'm going to get a fan from each game and we'll do a linked Periscope thing from the games in the style of Soccer Saturday.
That's fine surely as we'd only be filming ourselves?!

I think it's pretty obvious that the league wouldn't allow anyone to stream the game. If somebody had asked me to stream the game, I wouldn't have even considered it. We'll. It's pretty clear where the league stand now. So I guess that's the end of that.

Seriously, who gets hurt by doing what they have banned?

Seriously, who gets hurt by doing what they have banned? If your business is selling an event, people being able to watch it for free would seem a pretty obvious problem to me. I'm surprised there's any surprise about this, on Twitter some people seem quite put out by it. Bizarre.

How does that stop people going to a game? If nothing else it's free promotion.

The league statement was in regard to continuous streaming (Periscope), like a webcast but free, I don't think it referred to people filming a minute or so of a fight or whatever.

Haha that statement looks like one that would have come from Neil Black or GM. Any would have thought it was the Premier League the way they go on. It's a minority sport.
If they want to act big leagues, why not do it properly by providing the fans with big leagues treatment, such as the game center type thing suggested before?

While the EIHL is not exactly speaking from a position of strength as its own media offering is so patchy and poor, I don't have a problem with what they have done. The fact that the promoters of an event do not provide effective media coverage doesn't mean casual punters can take things into their own hands.
A ban on live broadcasting from any kind of event, whether it's theatre, concert or whatever is perfectly normal. It's why some bands and venues vigorously pursue bootleggers through the courts. One of my jobs is running events (tours, so very different to sports, but it is still a "live" event / experience that people pay to participate in) and I would never knowingly let someone record the whole thing.
Wouldn't have any issue with Periscope being used for pre-match comment, end of period updates and post-match reaction but not for game coverage unless explicitly permitted by the event promoter - so either the league or the home club, wherever that responsibility lies.
