Elite League statement - Illegal Streaming

Saw this on Steeltalk, not sure if its been mentioned on here.

In recent weeks there has been an increase in the number of occasions when matches have been shown using the app Periscope.

This is a breach of copyright and will be taken very seriously by all clubs in the Elite League.

Anyone found to be live streaming games without prior agreement will be banned from attending games across the league.

As a league it is important we embrace the ever-changing world of social media, but at the same time we have also protect our product.

So what's peoples thoughts on this? Over sensitivity or do they have a point??

They absolutely have a point.

It is nobody's "right" to watch a game, you normally have to pay for it.

The same applies at any cinema, theatre etc.

To be honest, this is the first I've even heard of Persicope. The trouble is for me, if thats the case with a lot of people they may have just made the issue far worse, rather than better.

They have a point (it is after all their 'brand' and they have a right to protect it) BUT, if the EIHL weren't so backwards in its approach to streaming etc there wouldn't be the demand pushing individuals to do this.

The quality of streaming among teams is variable at best, from excellent quality (Steelers) through to dire (Edinburgh) and non-existent (Nottingham and Braehead), but there are also issues of consistency too (Sheffield cancelling a planned stream for example).

Then there is the extremely poor coverage by Premier Sport, perhaps best illustrated by their "sorry, rats chewed our cables" excuse the other week.

Why is it that a sport that plays to smaller attendances such as the British Basketball League managed to run a centrally-run streaming service for all games yet the EIHL still fumbles around like luddites? The pay-off for the BBL was that their streaming service (and footage quality) was deemed good enough that Sky have now approached them and are showing regular games.

There is an obvious demand for streamed games. Not everyone can travel yet people still want to see their teams play. It's about time the EIHL as a whole realised this and dealt with it, as a whole.

I don't understand why the league don't set up an EIHL version of game center with all the teams included and then do 2 things: have a monthly amount you pay to watch games back but any live games you want to watch you have to pay a small premium for to watch live otherwise you have to wait 24
/48 hours to watch to keep attendances up.



You can then have magazine shows, highlights, goal/player of the week/ month - do a package for all invlived

I would like to see them enforce a ban. they barely enforce player bans when a hit is so dirty the victim has to shower in bleach to get clean. No Welsh teams mentioned.

Yes, they're right to protect their property.

Agree with Tootoo et al above though, some form of EIHL Game Center would be ideal. Can't see Gary going for it.

This seems to have become a problem in just a week. I only heard of one stream before this was announced. Has it been going on for a long time and I've just missed it?

I agree that they should be allowed to do this. But it seems pretty hard to enforce as far as i can see. Even if someone is caught how are they going to stop them attending games? All you need to do is buy tickets in someone elses name. The door staff at all the arena's aren't going to know peoples faces. It would be better if they could spot fine them but i dont know how that works legally. Bit of a tricky one i think.

It would be pretty easy to ban a ST holder from their own rink though. The threat probably works on most people, wouldn't really be worth it.

That is exactly what should happen in my opinion. Would be difficult to work out how to divide the proceeds i imagine. Unless they used some form of analytic software to assess which home games were watched more etc and pay dividends dependant on that.

Woman sat next to me a few weeks back streamed pretty much the entire game through Periscope with her phone between dropping a pint of beer over herself and kicking over a bottle of water *&* puffing away on a vape at various points too!

I think it started from the storm game. A panthers fan was streaming it and it was all over twitter that they were doing it. I saw it retweeted a few times that night.
