Sheffield Steelers To Replace Coach That Has Broken Down Twice. But seriously, what's happened to the big orange coach with Steelers all over it? The last 2 games they came down in a "plain" one.

gump certainly has a point, lots of rumours coming out of sheffield about the ownership and how they have dealt with the team and players. I have to say panthers and belfast will dominate for a few seasons unless things change at sheffield. Consistancy goes along way and if it means taking a few season to get there then so be it. Shame the owners dont see it that way.

The difference is though gump that panthers went one season without silverware under Neilson. Granted the second season was only challenge cup. Finnerty has won 0 from 6, according to the owner had one of if not the highest budget team. Then to add to that havent made it into the last two playoffs. He doesn't deserve a third year. Though that is just my opinion. Totally agree kezy

Bad news for all of Steelers rivals but a no brainier for them. The guy is clearly not bright enough to be a leader of men. How could he expect to command the respect of a team while displaying childish little hissyfits time and time again. You call them "hissyfits"? Don't you remember Heavey, McSorley, Whistle, Blaisdell? Finnerty is quite reserved when compared to that lot.

Not saying he should go or not. In reality he had one year as a coach with new team of imports to mold into something. As you know it is difficult in this league to have success if one team is clearly dominate as the Panthers were this year. I think Smith created a number of issues for Finnerty which played a part in this years inconsistent performance. Time will tell once players are able to speak without repercussions.

Rob Wilson will be happy, Finnertys head rolling after he and his team 'let' Panthers win the league... idiot. I felt that Finnerty did need more time and he would have learned to channel more of his passion and energy into his team and keep his head. He wouldv'e also needed to realise that players of Champagne's quality should not be left in the stands. Not sure if you are implying Wilson will take over at Shuff but he has been confirmed as staying in Italy next season (Although we all know the value of contracts in this sport...) Gutted, i'd love to give him some stick when we beat them again next season. ITS ALL YOUR FAULT!

longjohn "I have to say panthers and belfast will dominate for a few seasons unless things change at sheffield. Consistancy goes along way and if it means taking a few season to get there then so be it. Shame the owners dont see it that way." Panthers have made progressive improvements over the last few years, ultimately leading to the championship this season and being in a very strong financial position (or at least NB is). There will be personnel changes next year, as players inevitably move on. The question is, can we recruit as well and I would say even better, as things never stay still and there is the extra commitment in Europe. Belfast have a lot of sorting out to do one thinks, so who is to say that Steelers wont be a real force next season. They looked better Tuesday concentrating on playing ice hockey and no doubt they will weed some out. Interesting isnt it that Champagne is again on the outside looking in, but not really. Where for him next season?

True - then again those guys all put trophies in the cabinet Doug, Finnerty is 0/6 on trophies during his tenure or 0/7 if you include the Conference. Added to that, he failed to make the POFW in both seasons. From the outside looking in, he had to go IMHO.

Given the mentality/structure of this league the argument of silverware then only applies to 3 teams. All others are wasting their time and money. Any team in any prof. hockey league that is playing at 600-700 percent winning percentage will receive a little more than a year of full budget to garner so called silverware. Steelers under Smith's ownership will never match the likes of Nottingham or Belfast as he is a hockey fan which is far from being hockey knowledgeable in terms of building a championship team. One of the first things you learn is to air your dirty laundry behind closed doors not in the print or social media. At least Finnerty had the prof. and respect for his players and the teams fans not to slag off the club in his interviews after he was not renewed. A true sign of his character and awareness of what it takes to be a winner. Not so sure Smith can say that with any conviction but time will tell. It will be very impotant that the new coach is in place sooner than later as recruitment never takes a holiday and I think he may have a tough time retaining those quality imports that the Steelers presently have.

Think we may see a wholesale clear out at Sheffield this summer.

By the sounds of what you are saying Gump there won't be any quality imports left if they are all that disgruntled. I did actually think they would keep Finner for another year as I stated before we have learnt that consistency is the key.

All you can say for certain is who ever the next coach is will get an even bigger playing budget and if that fails then the next year it will increase again until they win something, they go bust or both.

Can you give us anything of substance gump? ... Do you actually know anything of substance? I suspect the only substance are the ones he's taking!! Go on Forrest... what do you know? Give us a clue as to what all this dirty washing will be! As for retaining the quality imports. I agree that it will be tough to retain the likes of Ferguson, Michel and Limpright, but at least Fata, Goertzen and Jorgensen are on 2 year Uni deals. Retaining imports is a challenge for all EIHL teams, as the nature of the league is such that with it being a small fish any stand out players are liable to be gobbled up by bigger leagues/teams. As the Champions and with some stand out players I suspect the Panthers will see this first hand over the summer. Who knows, perhaps even your Bench Coach will move to a bigger team to get the top job?

Just to add to this - One advantage I think the Panthers DO have compared with the others is the Brit core they have which is younger and better than anyone else. Since Dowd left, Giants are short on quality. The Steelers' Brits are getting on. Coventry, Cardiff and Braehead are left fighting for the scraps, whilst the Panthers have top quality Brits to build a team around. This gives you a head start in recruitment for next year. I'd give Simmsey a piggyback from Sheffield to Birmingham to have Lacho and/or Myers at Sheffield (and the only reason I didn't mention Clarke is his age).

Cant argue with grayy on that.
Ling has been openly approached on Twitter, Im sure Fox will have been tempted by some offer over this season.

I'd just like to echo the first two paragraphs of your article in particular, Jono. A really decent bloke. I hope he gets fixed up with another job soon.

Finners maybe a decent bloke if Jono and Stef say so i reckon it must be right, but he and every other steelers coach gets caught up in the childish circus that Simms needs to operate in, and so the hate angle comes in, having said that Finners record wasn't good but he was up against two brilliant coaches in Belfast and our own Corey! Sarich or Tait player coach saves money for Smith?

Ive never met Ryan Finnerty, but i cant help feeling a little sorry for the bloke. As a player, i wasnt particularly a fan of his, but that is probably because he never played for us. ( although he apparently came close to signing that year he ended up in Cardiff ). He was one of those little wind up merchants, exactly the same as Bruce Richardson and David Ling (although in my opinion both of those two fall somewhere short of Linger). In interviews i always found him honest in his opinion, never heard him disrespect any other teams or fanbases. Sure he wore his heart on his sleeve, but i like that, he obviously cares, about his team and the game. As a Panthers fan i shouldnt like him, but i do, dont know why, probably i see in him the type of person i am, if hes on your side then he`ll defend you to the hilt, but, again, i stand to be corrected, ive never heard him say anything that didnt have a little truth behind it, (thinking of his rants on refereeing, be honest, he says what we all think). Im glad he didnt work out at the Steelers, but for their sake, not for his.

If you listened to Mansfield 103.2 tonight and face off Thursday (and you can listen again later tonight on the Xtra) The Steelers are in the process of finding a new coach - but they want somebody with experience according to the interview with David Simms; it could take up to 6 weeks to find a new coach

6wk search tells me that Smith reacted far to quickly and as a fan not as someone with any hockey knowledge. In 6wks the main import targets are already in serious discussion with teams. They have no plan, over reacted and now what do we do..... Glad to have the stability with the Panthers, wonder why Steelers are so reluctant to take a page from thier book. Even Finnerty acknowledge that the Panthers were the model maybe you can't do that in Steeler dream land and survive
