Congratulation Panthers you never fail to disappoint the Steelers with your classy comments. It takes so little to make you happy. Its so sad to be that desperate! Well done to the Cardiff Devils! As opposed to your 'jog on kitty' comment posted on StalinTalk? (Posted before you came over here doing your poor impression of a fish.......)

I suppose a bit of gloating is in order, given the fairly average comments which come out of Shuff - large broadcaster included. However if the retort is that it is not worth winning there is a simple answer Dont enter it then.

Bring on the "oh we dont care about the challenge cup speech" although i remember a familiar one at the start saying we're going out and challenging for all silverware. To be fair we haven't won it since the last Superleague season, and in the grand scheme of things I'd rather we concentrated on the league, especially with the fixture congestion we already have, these games would have only added to it. Do you mean Grand Sham. ;D You'll have to concentrate on the league as you're out of the cup.

However if the retort is that it is not worth winning there is a simple answer Dont enter it then. I suppose we could take pressure off our fixture schedule by doubling up games with the league, but that would make a bit of a mockery of what it supposed to be a stand-alone cup competition. I always want my team to win every game, but just like last season, I can't say I'm too bothered that we're out. I'm very much a weekend Ice Hockey supporter, I don't particularly like midweek games and unfortunately this competition seems to have become the midweek cup. I also believe had we not got knocked out of this competition last season that we wouldn't have gone on to win the league by a point. It's good for the Devils though, they're out of the league title race and this should give their supporters something positive to focus on.....Good luck to them, they've had a rough ride these last few years. Happy Christmas to all you folks down the road, see you on the 26th and 27th. Regards Doom

What's the obsession with our attendances though? Putting aside all of the niggles... why do you think that there is so much attention paid to your attendances? Because they have been steadily declining over the years, because your club is an ongoing financial disaster, and anything that hurts one club hurts all. When I started watching in the 1999-2000 season, your attendances averaged at about 5500. According to the Ice Hockey Annual, your average attendance in the 2009-10 season was 3753 (I haven't picked up the latest IHA yet to get last season's stats - but does anyone truly expect them to be vastly improved over that?). Your poor attendances - and poor they are, let's not fool ourselves - are a major problem. For you and for the rest of us. I have no love for your club whatsoever, but I still maintain that we can't afford to lose any club... yourselves included. Take this as honest concern - and concentrate on where the problems really lie. Firstly, see above. Secondly, our Braehead game was midweek, which always reduces attendances (and I bet the delayed face-off cost a few walk-ups)... your Fife game was Saturday, supposedly your biggest night of the week. Thirdly, how many of said attendees were on freebie tickets? It's paying customers you need, after all. Fourthly... if there's one team that doesn't need to worry about attendances, it's us. Don't sidetrack yourself... the problem is in Sheffield, not Nottingham.

Shaggy,
The same is true of numerous other teams though, but we rarely see comments about Hull, Edinburgh or Cardiff's attendances.
All 3 clubs used to have much bigger crowds than they get today and all 3 have had financial difficulties that have impacted on the league.
It's correct what Chris has posted, our Arena is far bigger than any other so even with a decent crowd by other clubs standards, the place will look quite empty.
If our average this season is about 4,300, that's 50% of capacity......I would think the likes of Edinburgh and Hull are well below that as a percentage of their capacity, so their facilities will look even emptier than ours, but nobody ever seems to comment on this.
There does seem to be an unhealthy obsession with our attendances as opposed to anybody elses.

Doom,
I'll give you half a point for that... but you're still ducking the real issue.
Yes, more attention is paid on here to the problems of the Steelers... why?
- because you're the closest team to us - because you've gone bust more often than all 3 of those teams you name put together - because your attendances have fallen more (in actual numbers, possibly in percentages as well) than the other teams, and from a greater height - which is always more noticeable. You've probably lost more actual fans than those other three put together. - because there are more Steelers fans posting on here (usually with narky comments) than fans of all of the other EIHL teams put together - because this whole niggling/hatred/call-it-what-you-will is an artificial creation born in Sheffield, and there's naturally going to be a backlash against that down here. - etc etc
You want to talk about unhealthy obsessions? Put your own house in order first on THAT one, if you please...

Shaggy,
Just a couple of quick points.
1. Our attendances at the Arena are up on last season and possibly the highest they've ever been in the Elite League era.
Admittedly our attendances steadily declined during the ISL, but during the EIHL era they've tended to jump around a bit.
2. I'm not sure it's factually correct that we've gone bust more times than the other 3 put together. Both Cardiff and Hull have had numerous owners due to financial problems. In the case of Cardiff, often the same owner as us.
Edinburgh may not have gone bust last season, but they may as well have closed up shop because on the ice they became a farce that was hurting all the other businesses in the league.....and not for the first time in recent seasons.
Regards

Sheffield's average attendances (source : The Ice Hockey Annual):- 91-92 : 5760 92-93 : 7516 93-94 : 7680 94-95 : 7851 95-96 : 8076 96-97 : 737597-98 : 636098-99 : 550299-00 : 547200-01 : 5750 01-02 : 403802-03 : 391103-04 : 4766 04-05 : 362005-06 : 4098 06-07 : 390807-08 : 369508-09 : 363409-10 : 3753 10-11 : 11-12 : are we ever going to know? (so few attendance figures published...) Our attendances at the Arena are up on last season and possibly the highest they've ever been in the Elite League era. How can you know that? The Steelers only seem to publish attendance figures when it suits them. Which is a very strong indication that the large number of attendance figures that they don't publish are not good news for them. How can we possibly believe anything other than that the figures are poor? The club's proven track record of being quick to self-promote is working against them here. Then, of course, there are the freebies. How much of the (few) attendance figures we have seen published are made up of those? Nobody knows... Actually, they've just declined... irrespective of ISL or EIHL era. Two upward jumps in EIHL... other than that, back to the steady erosion. No? How many times have the Steelers gone bust? Other teams had financial problems (hell - we did before Neil Black took us over)... but what's that got to do with it? You're the one that tried to deflect attention away from the Steelers by bringing other clubs into it... what are you trying to avoid? Now that's a low blow... what have the Caps ever done to you? More deflection. Here's a thought... if Edinburgh's weaknesses have hurt all of the other businesses in the league... how much more have the Steelers' failures hurt everyone? You've lost more fans, likely alienated more sponsors, got through more owners, had more bankruptcies and legal actions, made a bigger splash about all of your vaunted successes (which makes the failings all that more noticeable in comparison)... spend big, win big, talk big - fail big. Face facts, Doom... your club is the problem. Quite possibly the biggest problem club in the EIHL. And denying it, deflecting attention from your club and onto others, avoiding the subject... that only makes you part of the problem. Don't be part of the problem... please?

(so few attendance figures published...) Which proves my point that attendances steadily declined during the ISL, whilst during the EIHL they've generally fluctuated up and down between 3,500 and 4,000.....That's not a steady decline. If the source on that other thread is to be believed, then our attendances this season are about 4,400 which would actually be an upward trend. For what it's worth I've been going to the Arena for 20 years and I can gauge whether crowds are up or down. I'd say in general the attendances have been much healthier this season and 4,000+ would seem about right. Regarding deflecting attention, it's not a case of that at all. I'm making the point that other clubs have had just as many difficulties as Sheffield with finances and attendances, yet that seems to get ignores.....That's obsession. Regards Doom

Big crowds only seem to come when the Panthers are in town. That's with a load of free tickets given to kids and their families, Belfast do the same thing. Reasons, 1. To make the place look full 2. To make more noise for the home team. They could close the upper blocks at the Tin Shed, making the fans sit from the plexi up wards, but with the rubbish views, I don't think I would be very happy. But if you get the tickets for free, you can't really complain.

After watching the round up on Sky this evening, I would say that Sheffield need every game they can get at home - the rink looked empty against Fife. I was shocked at how many empty seats were there and that was in the lower stands! I dred to think how bad it was in the upper tiers. The attendance against Fife was one of out lowest of the season at the arena. Still the same as you got against Braehead on Tuesday. It's a less attractive fixture, but the people that didn't go missed a fairly decent game, especially in the last 10 minutes when we DeCaro decided to make it interesting. I can refer you to the Sheffield attendances thread, if you like, we are averaging over 4300 a game at the arena, hardly bad, hugely up on previous years which have been averaging in the low-mid 3000s. We're doing better this year than previously, and expecting well over 7000 on Monday, but I won't let facts get in the way of what you're saying. Finally - people in Sheffield tend to sit higher up, maybe it's because the plexi is awful, personally it's so I can see everything that happens on the ice. Whilst I don't wish low attendances on any team, as to keep Ice Hockey viable we need this game well supported up and down the country. However, I do think that stating that your average attendance is 4300 is a huge exaggeration. If attendance is that healthy then why are the attendances not published on the Elite Ice Hockey Game Sheets? Having had a quick flick back over the reports I can only see figures published for the Nottingham game where it was 6077 back in November and the other fixture against the Panthers where it was 5955. Call me cynical but it appears you are only reporting healthy attendance figures for some reason. Edit I found an attendance at the Motorpoint Arena for the game vs Coventry on the 8th Oct and that was reported as 1312.

Having seen some of your comments on steelbleat over the last few seasons, I think people in glasshouses and all that... There seem to be an increasing amount of chippy comments from steelers on here, even from usually reasonable posters such as Doom. All this backbiting is hardly in the festive spirit, so in the spirit of the season, Merry Xmas to the Steelers and all their fans, here's hoping you have a solvent 2012.
