How valuable has he been already??
NO ONE has tried any funny stuff and our players have been allowed to play without living in fear like last season.
Last year Voth was hammering our guys and ruled the ice, but, as they both got on the ice for the first time, Shmyr skated up behind him and had a quick word in he ear and left Voth looking pefrified and as a result he was quiet as a mouse all night.
AND he does all this without going round cheap shotting people! He just gets on with his own game playing cleanly.
Gomez and Campbell wouldnt go anywhere near him, yet the next game are more than happy to go with Clouthier and Darby at Sheffield.
Ofcourse Cornish will have a go but I dont think he'll have much success, judging by his 2 bouts with Gomez.
Shmyr may not be clocking up the points but you have to ask if we'd be as successful up to yet had he not been here.

I think simoes is also a big reason for people not cheap shotting us and barely even hitting us
every time simoes is on the ice you can see them looking over there should as you know that if he hits you it will hurt

Team man through and through, on PP and PK, what more can he give, as has been said a good return of points.

Summed up nice and simply, how many teams can boast having a true enforcer whos 6'6 on the first line PK?! He is exactly what we have needed for a long time, Simoes is the hitter weve needed for ages and Krajicek is sheer quality. The out and out point scorers have got to find another gear tho (Well MP and RS) and Corey has got to stick on a line with Rees otherwise we are going to give goals away all season. I wudnt give Shmyr the MVP but most underrated and to be honest id begrudge giving it anyone else other than Simoes

Just a little off subject, but like you Rich, very dissapointed with Stevens, his speed is well, not what I expected, is he carrying an injury? or have the years caught up with him.

Again, off subject and sorry to be negative but the guy isnt in the game nearly enough. You really noticed him in belfast and he terrorised the defence every shift but hes very off colour. I really rate him (and Petricko for that matter) but both need to be more "go to" guys IMO Maybe it is partly down the injury hes trying to shake off

I think McAslan is the 'star' over stevens, not to detract from stevens, he doesnt have the blistering speed I heard about but hes got the stickwork and vision for the game.
Schmyr wasnt overly impressing me, and ive mentioned it to a few of you, till I read 5 points in 7 games... and thinking about it, yea no ones begun pushing us about what with Schmyr to just batter them if need be and Simoes to throw back checks twice as hard.
Everyone has a role. His stickwork is still good though hes just a bit slow... but then again, what can you expect!

Matt44.... excellent post, hadnt really looked at Shmyr in that way up until now, and put like that, then yes he really is an asset... i must admit, i would like him to be a bit quicker, but then with the pace of the rest of the team, i guess it doesnt matter all that much.
In all honesty, there isnt really a player that i would want to see go, for the first time since 1998, i can honestly say, i like every player, and that everyone is as important to the team.... nice situation to be in isnt it, if you win silverware or not, at least you can finish the season proud of your team!

I totally agree Keefe, the passion is there and everyone has a role to play.
Teddy thats why I said mr underrated, when youve been playing a while youll realise more about mind games and things off the puck (Not to patronise you of course) and Shmyr has got that presence we havnt seen since Cairns imo. The key is NO breakouts or plays break up because of his speed so he doesnt hurt the team but still plays his game

Went to hull last night and some bloke sat next to my mum was saying how clarke is a disgrace for having that fight when he is captain and that he doesn't rate simoes whilst also moaning about every penalty we got!! Honestly why go and watch if you moan every minute of the game and disrupt the match for people sat next to you enjoying it!! Sorry rant over

Also, on the Subject of Shmyr........ he isnt the big hitter that Simoes is but how many times has the laid his body on the line by throwing himself on the ice to get in the way of a shot??
He did it about 5 times just against Cardiff!!

You have to be mentally tough to keep doing it over and over

Great thread this one - nice to us being positive about our team.:-) I couldn't agree more - there isn't a single player I would get shot of this year, there is much more to come from Stevens, but he makes opportunities for others to score so he's doing his job for me and its not like we are the bottom or anything is it? So why even think about fixing it if it aint broke? And the Brits are more than holding their own, Myers is really blossoming this season under Ellis, I think DC is going to have a run for his money as No 1 Brit......

I think Stevens is still playing with a groin injury. He's had it since the start of the season apparently.

He did it about 5 times just against Cardiff!! Indeed but when he finishes the hit you can still see the grimace on the opponents face because hes such a big guy. As for blocking shots hes took a couple in a funny place now but hes still willing to get straight down, its infectious because everyone else tries to do it aswell now

Plus - anyone else notice in Edinburgh what a great team Shmyr and James Neil make? Nobody's going to seriously mess with our face cage whilst RS is on the ice with him, and Shmyr was making SO much space for young James to exploit...
This is the thing - we have a real TEAM here... each of them contributing in their own ways, none of them dead weights. People have been saying that Stevens doesn't look effective... well, maybe he is still carrying an injury, I don't know - but there were a couple of times on Saturday when I saw him just carve through the Cardiff defence as if it wasn't there. Looks to me like he's playing a supporting role at the moment, which is never as noticeable. Whatever the pan is, it seems to be working...
