Info I was told last time I booked at the NIC.
Just to let any other students know the NIC will only sell you a student ticket, on the door or in person at the box office, if you produce a valid student card. (the person doesn't have to be there but they need to a student card for every student ticket sold)
They will also be checking to see if you have your student card on the night!
They told me they'd been forced to do this by the number of people abusing the previous system. (I've always been surprised never to have been asked for my card! )

Amazed this is even raised as a topic. Although I've known a couple of places not bother to ask for student ID I always make sure that I have the card(s) available when buying the ticket and/or when going into the event no matter where it is. Often the venue will say you do need the ID and then you don't but it's not exactly a problem. In fact most student tickets have a comment on them saying that ID should be available to be checked on entry. If I know I'm going to be buying tickets for other students I make a point of asking them for their card in advance. Some rinks/arenas will let you book student tickets over the phone but won't send them out as you need to turn up with the ID to collect them. Seems fair enough to me!
